outplacement series: what she thinks matters and telling stories
Last week was the [kick off to this series](https://busy.org/@felander/outplacement-series-intro-and-info) where I explained what the rough plan was for the next 3 months what my outplacement was concerned.

![image.png](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmSQV7jyNBbSLmJYwKa7zvbyWkkorH2zBVjMVFpsSPmDG3)

So for the week leading up to the meeting of yesterday I had some homework to do. First up was the hard part.

# the confrontation

I had to ask @yogacoach (my wife to be) what she thought of me and of my work ethics.
The problem there is her brutal honesty and she even though she was positive when asked about what makes me stand out, she also answered the question about my negatives without reserve. And at first I was a bit hurt that she would do this to me but after reading it through (and being honest to myself) I had to admit she was right about a lot of points.
It is not easy being confronted with an honest vision of yourself especially by a loved one but those are the easiest to accept in the end.

# the timeline

So at my outplacement session we went through those answers and discussed them, then we went through my timeline to see where I was happy personally and professionally.

We checked my CV for inconsistencies (fixing those today) and did a cursory overview while also going a bit deeper with the timeline next to it to find a few of the reasons as to why I was happy at certain points in my career and why I was not.

I will leave an empty one here if you want to fill this in for yourself but it is actually quite revealing when used next to a CV to jot down when you were happy and when less and combine that with personal life. Work is a big part of life and you should be happy doing it. I also added my version for sake of transparancy
I will not tell all but safe to say I was not happy or satisfied where I have been in my last job and the redundancy is not leaving me heartbroken

# my next homework for the meeting next week is filling out my stars *(not a fan of the name either but hey...)*

This is an excel file where I have to fill in each point on a certain project or thing you have done that was successful.
i.e. from reorganizing the company to helping your colleague with the dishes *(only a slight exaggeration)*.
![image.png](https://ipfs.busy.org/ipfs/QmRxgtfYoa8mS13MfW2shYYoecqQQ9BG6jCvdYgcqbVxfG)

So the point is to fill in according to the title of the column and to reach at least 20 examples by the end of June and roughly 3 for next week.

# the last thing I had to do was tell my story

this is a very important part because there are things potential employers will ask when being interviewed and because of that you need to be able to tell a convincing and consistent story about why you are unemployed and looking for a new challenge.
For me this is easier then for others since I have been made redundant due to economic reasons that are no fault of my own. But it is important to be able to bring it in a nice and compelling way that does not leave room for a lot more questioning.

You do not want to get stuck on the past instead of taking your story and looking to the future.

I hope this has been helpful and could aid someone in some way.

please leave comments or questions below.

Telling or writing a story is even more exciting than consuming it. A fictional realm, invented by your own brain is like a conquered land that will be yours forever and can be shares with others. Imagination is the greatest gift humanity has recieved. I think your wife's great!!
