This is something new I am trying - to write at least 500 words a day. I call it the Felt.Buzz Five Hundred. I write a five-minute freewrite and then add more words to get to the magic number...

# **Strange Goings On At Number Twenty-Three" (Part 2)**

The odour reminded Gabby of the time she has spilt milk on the floor of the kitchen, just under the fridge. She knew she should have cleaned it up properly, but she couldn't be arsed. She thought she had better things to do - mostly returning quickly to the sofa with the bowl of cornflakes so she could watch the next episode of the crappy series she was binge-watching on Netflix. 

After a few days, however, Gabby realised she really should have been arsed. 

"Never do that again," she said, on her hands and knees scrubbing at the sour milk scum that had almost turned into cheese. "Don't do a half-arsed job, Gabs. Do things properly." 

She often thought she should do things properly. But there always seemed to be so little time and so much to do. It seemed stupid to waste her life doing things the right way if the half-arsed way was quicker. 

Although often - she found - it was not quicker, in the long term. 

Anyway, the strange smell coming from Mr Finger's flat smelt like that spilt sour milk.

Ellen, Gabby noticed from the way she wrinkled her nose, noticed it too.

“Has Mr Fingers been making cheese in here? I’m sure there is something in the tenancy agreement about *not* making cheese.” 

Gabby wasn’t sure about that. There was an awful number of rules and regulations (“It is strictly forbidden to keep donkeys or chickens in the flats” was one rather specific rule that made her wonder which previous tenant had done precisely that). But she didn’t remember one about cheese.

Gabby knocked at Mr Fingers’ front door, and it gave way as her fist made contact with the wood, swinging open to reveal a short corridor - very much like hers - with three doors going off it. 

“Hello?” Gabby called. “Mr Fingers? Are you there? It is Gabby - from number fifty-four.”

“And Ellen from next door.”

“Are you alright, Mr Fingers?”

There was no answer. Ellen looked at Gabby.

“I think we should call Mr Klint,” she said. “Or maybe the police.” 

Gabby looked at her watch. Half-past seven. If Mr Fingers was alright they would get in to trouble for disturbing Mr Klint at this hour. And it didn’t seem as though they should bother the police unless they thought a crime had been committed.

“Mr Fingers!” she called. “We are going to come in and check that you are alright. Shout out if you would rather we went away.”

Gabby could feel Ellen’s nervous eyes burn into her as they waited.

Silence… or… did she hear a moaning sound? A groan, perhaps?

“Mr Fingers! We are coming in.”

Gabby stepped into Mr Fingers flat. 

The first thing she noticed was how cold it was. 

That made sense, Gabby guessed. All the windows were left open. Except… except if felt colder than it did outside.

“It’s like a bloody freezer in here.” Ellen shivered, her breath hanging in the air like an icy cloud.

As usual I wrote the freewrite in five minutes using themostdangerouswritingapp.com and then copied and pasted it into a googledoc, tied it up a bit and then wrote more words!
