This is something new I am trying - to write at least 500 words a day. I call it the Felt.Buzz Five Hundred. I write a five-minute freewrite and then add more words to get to the magic number... "What the fuck?" Ellen said. Gabby shrugged and took a step forward. "Mr Fingers?" she called again. "Are you there?" They both listened, heads tilted to one side. Nothing. Then... there *was* a noise. A long-drawn-out sound that reminded Gabby of her grandmother. "Don't mind me dear," she would say as she let out a long and loud fart. "It's just my lazy wind." Gabby began to chuckle. Ellen looked at her, eyebrows raised. "Did you not hear that?" Gabby said, trying to control her laughter. "It sounded just like someone breaking wind." Ellen's forehead crumpled. "Are we laughing at farts now, Gabby?" she asked. "Because I think things are a little bit too weird here to be laughing at fart jokes." Gabby tried to reel in her laughter. Ellen was right. Whatever made that sound might be dangerous. One big dangerous farting machine. She burst out laughing. "What the fuck is wrong with you?" Ellen whispered. … Gabby stopped laughing. She didn’t know what the fuck was wrong with her. Was it the cold that was effecting her brain? Something in the freezing air that was altering her perception? “Sorry,” she said. “I’m not sure what is happening.” “I think we should call Mr Klint,” Ellen said again. “We are here now,” Gabby said. “I think Mr Fingers is in trouble. It is so cold in here. If we wait for Mr Klint, Mr Fingers might die from hypothermia.” Ellen appeared to consider that for a moment and then nodded. “Let’s get on with it then.” Gabby hammered on the door on the right, nearest to her. If it was the same layout as her flat it would be the bedroom. “Mr Fingers, I am going to open the bedroom door,” she called. She put her hand on the handle and then released it almost immediately, letting out a yell. “What!” Ellen looked at her, eyes wide. Gabby showed her her hand. The palm was red raw, the skin had been ripped from it. She put it to her mouth, licking it to stop the bleeding and to warm it through. “It’s freezing,” she said, as best she could with a mouth full of hand. “The handle, I mean.” “That’s it,” Ellen said. “We’re leaving. We’ll call Mr Klint *and* the police.” Gabby hesitated and then nodded. Her hand hurt like fuck. They both turned, took a step towards the front door and then stopped. In front of them was a solid wall. The door had vanished. “What’s going on?” Ellen’s voice was wobbely, convaying the sense of panic that Gabby felt too. Behind then there was the slow sound of breaking wind that Gabby had found so funny just a few minutes ago. She wasn’t laughing now. Gabby turned around trying to locate the source of the sound. Her mouth fell open. The corridor had changed, no longer resembling her’s or Ellen’s. ...
