La noche del 1ro. de Junio en Comerica Park, 26 hombres de Cleveland habían sido retirados en fila por el abridor venezolano Armando Galarraga. Una curva a 86 MPH bajó hacia la esquina de afuera del plato y Jason Donald bateó un roletazo por primera base. El también venezolano Miguel Cabrera se movió a su derecha capturó la pelota y aseguró el tiro a la primera base, donde Armando había entrado a pisar con el fin de hacer la asistencia. Lo que ocurrió a continuación dejó a todo el mundo del béisbol perplejo. Jim Joyce, un umpire veterano de 25 años respetado por todos, gritó: "¡Quieto..!" ante la mirada incrédula de Cabrera, Donald y una sonrisa nerviosa del propio Galarraga. El involuntario error precipitó la inclusión de la normativa en la temporada siguiente, ante los gritos de escándalo de los fanáticos quienes son los verdaderos financistas del juego. Las reacciones del momento fueron demasiadas. En retrospectiva y con la calma de los años, se puede ver en la repetición de vídeo un contexto más amplio. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jim Leyland y compañía se le encimaron a Joyce, luego del out 27 y tuvieron que intervenir los demás umpires para evitar el linchamiento. Calmados los ánimos en los vestidores, el Gerente General de los Tigres, Dawbroski, le pidió a Galarraga que fuera al vestidor de árbitros para consolar a Joyce. El tipo se derrumbó en llanto inconsolable al ver la repetición por monitores de su error. Y no quería salir hasta que todo el mundo se fuera del estadio. Sabía lo que le esperaba afuera. Al día siguiente, un Z21 rojo le era entregado como regalo de Chevrolet a Armando, por mérito deportivo al conservar la calma. Tanto Joyce como Galarraga fueron invitados a intercambiar alineaciones en el plato antes de comenzar el siguiente juego de la serie. Y, como es natural, aplausos y abucheos acompañaron el acto de desagravio al par de protagonistas. 25 años de trabajo serio tirados por la borda. Debe ser durísimo ser recordado por una sola jugada (el hombre quien negó el juego perfecto), que por los años dedicados al arbitraje. Hasta un libro llegaron a publicar para revisar la histórica jugada, ambos como co-autores.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;La verdad, ignoro si en otros deportes profesionales haya existido algo parecido. El que una sola jugada haya modificado el juego para siempre. Tirar un juego perfecto no es algo que se logra fácilmente. Es una proeza que solo se ha realizado 23 veces en la historia. Un par de años después de aquello (en 2012), otro venezolano -Félix Hernández- logró la proeza al lanzar el 22do. Y el 23ro.  sucedió en 2023 (once años luego). De ellos, solo 4 han sido protagonizados por latinos: Fernando Valenzuela (mexicano), Dennis Martinez (nicaragüense), Félix Hernández (venezolano) y Domingo Germán (dominicano). Tanto ha sido el impacto de aquel juego, que ha sido bautizado como el *"único juego perfecto de 28 outs"* ¿Podrá MLB cambiar el *"box score"* en el futuro? Lo dudamos. Principalmente porque otros mucho partidos tendrían que ser corregidos y sería injusto para los jugadores en la era donde las repeticiones de vídeo no existían. Pero de algo no queda duda: la mirada de incredulidad de Galarraga jamás pondrá en duda su don de gente ¿Que opina nuestro amado lector? Los leo.
