&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;¿Cómo habíamos podido sobrevivir en latinoamérica sin los rolls de sushi? Lo ignoro. Lo cierto del caso es que la comida japonesa tiene fanáticos y detractores por igual. También ignoro si tiene algo que ver con el racismo. Siempre se nos había dicho en latinoamérica: "Tenga *cuidado* con las costumbres de origen asiático" Al menos eso percibía en mi niñez y adolescencia. *El peligro amarillo* leíamos en la prensa de la época. Pero he aquí que la aviación y el internet cambió todo eso.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lo más cerca que estuve en mi niñez de comer algo asiático fue: **Comida china,** la cual tiene una enorme diferencia entre la que se sirve en restaurantes de toda Venezuela, con la verdadera comida que ingieren las personas de esa nacionalidad; es decir, en los restaurantes el arroz frito es el centro desde el cual sirven las variantes. **Comida Thai,** en una sola oportunidad en Aruba y fue porque nuestro padre invitó a nuestra numerosa familia a compartir una mesa en uno de nuestros viajes. La verdad, no sé si hay diferencias entra la servida en restaurantes y la verdadera comida que se sirve en la casa de los tailandeses.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Me encanta probar comida exótica y hacia los ´90 la comida japonesa penetró fuertemente el mercado de todo el continente. De repente se podía conseguir restaurantes japoneses en sitios exclusivos de Venezuela, pero mi primer encuentro con la comida japonesa, fue vergonzoso: estando de viaje en Miami, invité a mi hija al concierto de Britney Spears en el llamado National Car Rental Arena, para aquel momento. Después de disfrutar, la invité a un restaurant a cenar japonés. Adolescente, ella se decidió por un hamburguesa y yo por unos rolls de sushi.

Jamás había probado el wasabi, así que podrán imaginar lo que sucedió: pensando que era alguna especie de guacamole (Aguacate desmenuzado con especias y vegetales), tomé una bolita verde que habían puesto al borde del plato y la metí en mi boca. Lo siguiente fue boca picada y sudar hasta ponerme rojo. Pero no dije nada. No quería pasar vergüenza con mi hija. El mesero que nos atendió volvió a la mesa para revisar si todo estaba bien y al mirarme la cara se dió cuenta. Me dijo "tengo algo bueno para eso" y me trajo un whisky escocés. Pasado el trago amargo, disfruté el resto de la cena. 

> The dishes were served and my eyes were shining, I was hungry. I had never tasted wasabi, so you can imagine what happened: thinking it was some kind of *guacamole* (shredded avocado with spices and vegetables), I took a little green ball they had put on the edge of the plate and put it in my mouth. Next thing I knew, my mouth was stinging and I was sweating until I turned red. But I didn't say anything. I didn't want to embarrass my daughter. The waiter who waited on us came back to the table to check if everything was okay and when he looked at my face he noticed. He said "I have something good for that" and brought me a scotch. After the bitter aftertaste, I enjoyed the rest of the dinner.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;¡Por supuesto! Le dí una segunda oportunidad a los rolls y mucha agua ha pasado por debajo del puente, desde entonces. El sábado invité a mi esposa y nos escapamos del encierro a comer en *"Sushi and Ceviche"* Y nos deleitamos con varios rolls, la imagen que precede ilustra el barco que pedimos. Demás está decir que el wasabi no lo volví a pedir más nunca y los acompañantes de los platos de rolls en Venezuela son más benignos. En el trópico, la comida picante no está bien posicionada, solo en los lugares fríos, como en las montañas andinas de mi país.

> Of course! I gave the rolls a second chance and a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then. On Saturday I invited my wife and we escaped the confinement to eat at *"Sushi and Ceviche"* and we indulged in several rolls, the picture above illustrates the boat we ordered. Needless to say, I never ordered wasabi again and the accompaniments to the roll dishes in Venezuela are more benign. In the tropics, spicy food is not well positioned, only in cold places, as in the Andean mountains of my country.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Aunque estábamos en semana de cierre pudimos comer sin problemas, eso sí, con distancia social y con todas las medidas de bioseguridad de por medio (en Venezuela se sigue una modalidad de cuarentena de 7 días abiertos y 7 días cerrados para los restaurantes). Pedimos para llevar con el fin de dar a nuestra suegra y mis dos cuñadas que esperaban en casa. Mi esposa y yo teníamos muchas ganas de comer rolls, porque es uno de nuestros platos favoritos. No sé lo que tiene la comida japonesa que favorece la intimidad en una pareja, al menos así lo sentimos. 

> Although it was closing week, we were able to eat without any problems, with social distance and with all the biosecurity measures in place (in Venezuela there is a quarantine system of 7 days open and 7 days closed for restaurants). We ordered take-out to give to our mother-in-law and my two sisters-in-law who were waiting at home. My wife and I were really looking forward to eating rolls, because it is one of our favorite dishes. I don't know what it is about Japanese food that encourages intimacy in a couple, at least we felt that way.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Cuando llegamos a casa, yo me bajé con la comida y mi esposa regresó a comprar una medicina a la farmacia. Y fue en ese momento que tomé la imagen de MIKA arriba, quien esperaba el sonido del portón automático para empezar hacer escándalo. No le he podido quitar ese comportamiento. Imagino que es miedo. Sin embargo, ella siempre está alerta al regreso de cualquiera de nuestros vehículos y en esa pose le capturé. La vida sin rolls de sushi, creo, no tendría sentido.

> When we got home, I got off with the food and my wife went back to buy some medicine at the pharmacy. And it was at that moment that I took the image of MIKA upstairs, who was waiting for the sound of the automatic gate to start making a fuss. I have not been able to get that behavior out of her. I imagine it is fear. However, she is always alert to the return of any of our vehicles and in that pose I captured her. Life without sushi rolls, I think, would be meaningless.
