&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hace muchos años hicimos varios viajes a la nación panameña, la relación con aquella hermana república devino por el boom inmobiliario que se gestó antes de 2008 y cuando los apartamentos se hicieron una alternativa para ahorrar divisas en la época del control de divisas. Luego la burbuja estalló y terminó todo como termina cuando hay especulación, pero ese es otro cuento. Lo cierto del caso es que nuestro encuentro con Panamá fue algo de pura casualidad y unas oportunidades de viaje que agregamos a nuestra memoria.

Es un país económico para los estándares mundiales y que se ha hecho un nombre por las facilidades brindadas a las personas de la tercera edad, con políticas claras para capturar un mercado cautivo de pensionados norteamericanos y europeos. Esto ha convertido al país en un destino a considerar por la estabilidad que brinda y la oportunidad de escapar al clima de 4 estaciones en los países del norte del planeta.

It is an economic country by world standards and has made a name for itself through the facilities provided to senior citizens, with clear policies to capture a captive market of North American and European pensioners. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hasta hace relativamente poco tiempo considerada paraíso fiscal, Panamá tiene como capital a la ciudad de Panamá. Una ciudad ruidosa, con mucho tráfico en aquel tiempo y con indudable crecimiento de infraestructuras, producto de la inversión extranjera. Esto es así porque la estabilidad de la moneda y la relativa calma política hace que los inversores arriesguen su capital acá. Es un país pequeño pero con un potencial enorme. Con una historia marcada por la construcción del canal del mismo nombre, que conecta los océanos atlántico y pacífico.

A noisy city, with a lot of traffic at that time and with undoubted infrastructure growth, a product of foreign investment. This is so because the stability of the currency and the relative political calm makes investors risk their capital here. It is a small country but with enormous potential. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Tenemos un gran amigo allí, así que los desplazamientos dentro de la urbe los hicimos con él mayormente y en transporte público o taxi, según la necesidad, cuando él no podía hacer de anfitrión. Visitar los barrios de la ciudad brinda el pulso de cualquier conglomerado popular de la región latinoamericana. Lo decimos porque no son muy diferentes a las favelas brasileñas o los cerros de Caracas. Música caribeña a todo volumen y mucha gente en actividad efervescente, marcan la vida acá.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitar el centro de Miraflores, donde están las oficinas principales del canal y además ofrecen un tour por el museo, como en el propio canal, es un imperdible. Las entradas son económicas y te alimentas de la historia de tan majestuosa obra de ingeniería, recientemente ampliada para albergar barcos de mayor calado. En nuestra última visita las autoridades y contratistas se encontraban en plena etapa de construcción, así, pudimos ver parte de la remoción de tierra para la ampliación.             

> *Visiting the Miraflores center, where the main offices of the canal are located, and also offering a tour of the museum, as in the canal itself, is a must. Tickets are inexpensive and you get to learn about the history of this majestic engineering work, recently enlarged to accommodate larger ships. On our last visit, the authorities and contractors were in the middle of construction, so we could see part of the earth removal for the expansion.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Visitar el centro histórico es un espectáculo tanto de día como de noche. Panamá es una ciudad calurosamente húmeda y el turista tiene por cuidar su hidratación en las largas caminatas. Los restaurantes y cafés bullen en la noche panameña con un componente mágico: el juego de luces que adornan las calles históricas del centro. Los restaurantes son de clase mundial pero hay comida para todos los gustos, incluso la de calle con la cual ahorrará presupuesto de viaje. Otro imperdible es la visita a la *Panamá vieja,* una serie de ruinas que existen y donde estaba la antigua ciudad amurallada.           
 
> *Visiting the historic center is a spectacle both day and night. Panama is a hot and humid city and tourists have to take care of their hydration during long walks. Restaurants and cafes bustle in the Panamanian night with a magical component: the play of lights that adorn the historic downtown streets. The restaurants are world-class but there is food for all tastes, including street food that will save your travel budget. Another must is a visit to the **Old Panama,** a series of ruins that exist and where the old walled city was.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Muchos de los atractivos panameños se encuentran fuera de la ciudad: la isla de Contadora es uno de los centros turísticos mar afuera del país. También se encuentra una zona franca libre de impuestos en el norte del país, donde el canal desemboca en el océano atlántico: Colón. Es la segunda ciudad más grande de Panamá y los precios de sus productos importados son bien competitivos. El desafío es poder diferenciar los genuinos de las imitaciones, algo que ocurre con frecuencia en las zonas francas de latinoamérica.       

> *Many of Panama's attractions are located outside the city: Contadora Island is one of the country's offshore tourist centers. There is also a duty-free free zone in the north of the country, where the canal flows into the Atlantic Ocean: Colon. It is the second largest city in Panama and the prices of its imported products are very competitive. Ha sido así por largo tiempo debido a su pasado colonial y las decepciones recibidas por parte de la clase dominante de Colombia en tiempos de la independencia. De allí su separación como estado independiente luego de haber formado parte del país del sur. Aún así, del panameño nunca recibirá palabras altisonantes, mientra usted lo trate en el marco del respeto debido.  

> *The Panamanian is a cheerful person always ready to serve the visitor but distrustful of foreigners. It has been this way for a long time due to its colonial past and the disappointments received from the ruling class of Colombia at the time of independence. Hence its separation as an independent state after having been part of the southern country. Even so, you will never receive high-flown words from Panamanians, as long as you treat them with respect.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;El país que vió nacer al maestro Rubén Blades y al inolvidable Rod Carew, abre con humildad sus fronteras para recibir al visitante. Es una nación por descubrir con maravillas naturales selváticas y oceánicas de primer orden. Es una patria segura donde muchos pensionados de norteamérica van a pasar sus años dorados. Y es un retrato americanizado de una mezcla marcada por el paso de los estadounidenses que ayudaron a construir el canal y que luego se quedaron para mezclarse con estos caribeños. Vale la pena visitarlo, sin dudar. Nos leemos por allí.
