&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;No sé si la genética marca rasgos adquiridos o la simple imitación de comportamientos es heredada por la observación, pero si de algo me encuentro seguro es que nos gusta conducir vehículos por carreteras sinuosas, de paisajes atrayentes, al igual que lo hacía mi padre. Comencé a trabajar muy joven en la economía formal, tendría cerca de los 17 años cuando gané mi primer sueldo. Y desde ese momento se nos metió el gusanillo de querer tener un vehículo propio. Eso fue algo que logré a los 21 años luego de ahorrar para la cuota inicial.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Eso y el impulso por conocer, además de las continuas mudanzas entre ciudades de mi país por cuestiones de trabajo, nos permitió aventurar por las carreteras aledañas a las capitales de los estados donde residía. Me atrevería asegurar que pocos venezolanos conocen su país como este servidor. Las hermosas carreteras de los andes venezolanos, la interminable recta de la reserva Uveritos en Monagas, las rutas selváticas de la Gran Sabana o los impresionantes llanos, entre muchísimas otras, fueron nuestro destino cuando se trataba de los fines de semana de conducción.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;De todo lo anterior se desprende la razón de querer compartir mis memorias de la ruta 101 en California, Estados Unidos. Al regresar desde *Crater Lake National Park* en Oregon, tomamos la ruta estatal 62 con dirección a Metford donde pasamos la noche. Descansamos y temprano en la mañana, desayunamos para partir en dirección de la interestatal 5 hacia la estatal 199 para dirigirnos a Crescente City en California. Este paseo es muy lindo porque comienzas atravesar parques nacionales y tus sentidos comienzan alborotarse.     

> *From all of the above is the reason for wanting to share my memories of Route 101 in California, USA. Returning from *Crater Lake National Park* in Oregon, we took state route 62 towards Metford where we spent the night. We rested and early in the morning, we had breakfast to leave in the direction of Interstate 5 towards state route 199 to go to Crescent City in California. This ride is very nice because you start going through national parks and your senses start to go wild.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Una de las atracciones de estos parques son las sequoias. Una especie autóctona de árbol gigantescos de los cuales pueden tener una idea al visualizar la imagen que acompaña la portada de ésta publicación. Mi esposa posó gentilmente para que quienes vieran la fotografía dieran cuenta del tamaño del tronco de estos gigantes. Una de las características de estos milenarios árboles es su corteza. Siendo gruesa, protege de los incendios en época de sequía al tallo de la especie vegetal. Es por ello que las sequoias han logrado sobrevivir a través de tantos años (la vida promedio de un árbol de estos se calcula en +2000 años).            

> *One of the attractions of these parks is the sequoias. A native species of gigantic trees of which you can get an idea by viewing the image accompanying the cover of this publication. My wife graciously posed so that those who saw the picture would realize the size of the trunk of these giants. One of the characteristics of these ancient trees is their bark. Being thick, it protects the stem of the plant species from fire during the dry season. That is why sequoias have managed to survive for so many years (the average life of a sequoia tree is estimated at +2000 years).*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Manejar por un bosque lleno de este tipo de árboles puede ser intimidante porque su altura es inmensa y a veces, pareciera que se fueran a caer sobre la carretera. Por supuesto, esto es obra de la perspectiva de nuestra vista no acostumbrada a tal tipo de paisaje. Muchas curvas marcan el camino hasta llegar a Crescent donde comienza la aventura bordeando la costa californiana. Allí nos paramos almorzar especies marinas para continuar hacia el sur. Cuando haga este tipo de recorridos jamás puede ir con afán, no lo disfrutará.             

> *Driving through a forest full of these types of trees can be intimidating because their height is immense and at times, it looks as if they are going to fall over the road. Of course, this is due to the perspective of our eyes not being used to such a landscape. Many curves mark the road until we reach Crescent, where the adventure along the Californian coast begins. There we stop for lunch to eat marine species to continue south. When you do this kind of tour you can never go with eagerness, you will not enjoy it.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;El paseo por la costa está marcado por muchas paradas. No son obligatorias, pero sería un desperdicio de recursos evitar el contacto con estos paisajes agrestes sin permitir descansos en la conducción, para disfrutar de las vistas. En una de esas paradas, mi esposa y este servidor nos adentramos en una de las playas. Son muy agitadas y hay que tener cuidado porque son rocosas. Logramos tomar varias imágenes para el recuerdo y la mezcla del aire marino con el olor desprendido de los bosques es un olor difícil de olvidar. Usted tiene que hacer este recorrido alguna vez, mi estimado lector.          
 
> *The ride along the coast is marked by many stops. They are not mandatory, but it would be a waste of resources to avoid contact with these rugged landscapes without allowing breaks in the driving, to enjoy the views. On one of those stops, my wife and yours truly wandered onto one of the beaches. They are very rough and you have to be careful because they are rocky. We managed to take several pictures to remember and the mixture of the sea air with the smell coming off the forests is a smell that is hard to forget. You have to do this tour sometime, my dear reader.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lo bello de esta carretera es que combina ambos ambientes: marino y de bosque en varios tramos. Seguimos bajando hacia San Francisco y atravesamos muchos parques y reservas nacionales hasta llegar a Garberville, CA, donde pasamos la noche y tomamos un merecido descanso. Lo bello de esta ruta es que ofrece carreteras paralelas a ella donde te adentras en el follaje del bosque y vuelves a salir a la 101. Y es parte de lo que hicimos. En el transcurso de la mañana condujimos a Leggett donde tomamos la bifurcación a la estatal 1 hacia la costa.       

> *The beauty of this road is that it combines marine and forest environments in several stretches. We continued down towards San Francisco and drove through many national parks and reserves until we reached Garberville, CA, where we spent the night and took a well-deserved rest. The beauty of this route is that it offers roads parallel to it where you get into the forest foliage and back out onto 101, and that's part of what we did. Throughout the morning we drove to Leggett where we took the fork to State 1 to the coast.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Otras de las bellezas naturales de esta ruta es la fauna, la encuentras por cantidades increíbles y no le tienen miedo a los vehículos. Parece acostumbrada a la presencia de humanos ¿Un ejemplo? La imagen que antecede éste párrafo, la capturamos en una de las paradas que hicimos en un restaurante. Los ciervos pastaban sin ningún remordimiento ni agitación. Era un grupo grande. La conciencia de preservación del ambiente natural está muy desarrollada en California y solo debe usted dar cuenta de la cantidad de avisos en el camino, para advertir sobre las rutas de rebaños. 

> *Another of the natural beauties of this route is the fauna, you find them in incredible quantities and they are not afraid of vehicles. Do they seem to be accustomed to the presence of humans, an example? The image that precedes this paragraph, we captured in one of the stops we made at a restaurant. The deer were grazing without any remorse or agitation. It was a large group. The awareness of the preservation of the natural environment is very well developed in California and you only have to notice the number of signs on the road to warn about herd routes.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Es lógico pensar que los regalos de la naturaleza se encuentran en cualquier lugar del planeta donde hagamos el esfuerzo por viajar. Lo importante es cuidar el lugar donde viajemos. Y si desea un lugar agreste sin alejarse mucho de las ciudades, además de encontrase en la costa oeste de la unión americana, no olvide haber leído acá una reseña que le invita a tomar un vehículo y adentrarse en el reino de los eternos gigantes californianos.
