&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kyle, Tiffany y Jack recibieron un e-mail devastador. El abogado de la familia les comunicaba la muerte de su padre y les pedía que se presentaran en Miami para asistir a todas las diligencias posteriores al deceso. Todos residenciados al norte del país, quedaron pasmados. Hacía tres meses que la madre de éstos desafortunados hermanos había fallecido en la misma ciudad y tendrían que retomar sus pasos hacia ese destino con el fin de enterrar a quien le había sobrevivido.    

> *Kyle, Tiffany, and Jack received a devastating e-mail. The family's lawyer informed them of their father's death and asked them to come to Miami to attend all the proceedings following his death. All of them, living in the north of the country, were stunned. It had been three months since the mother of these unfortunate siblings had passed away in the same city and they would have to retrace their steps towards that destination to bury the one who had survived her.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Acordaron por teléfono los tres, viajar por tren aquella ciudad con el fin de rememorar las propias aventuras en familia, con veranos signados por este tipo de medio de transporte. No en balde, su padre había escalado desde simple ayudante de maquinista, pasando por todos los cargos de un patio de trenes, hasta ejecutivo de la mayor compañía ferroviaria del país, donde se había retirado luego de 45 años de servicio.  

> *The three of them agreed by telephone to travel by train to that city to recall their adventures as a family, with summers marked by this type of transportation. It was no coincidence that their father had worked his way up from a simple assistant engineer, through all the positions in a railroad yard, to the executive of the largest railroad company in the country, where he had retired after 45 years of service.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Llegarían a la principal estación de Miami en horas separadas; sin embargo, acordaron a encontrarse en la estación porque apenas les separaba 40 minutos entre el horario más pronto y el más tardado. Mientras escuchaban el sonido de los rieles, cada uno evocaba la magia de aquellos días de verano. Era la forma más económica de viajar en familia porque el padre recibía grandes descuentos en su condición de empleado de la compañía transportista.

> *They would arrive at Miami's main station at separate times; however, they agreed to meet at the station because they were only 40 minutes apart between the earliest and latest times. As they listened to the sound of the rails, they each evoked the magic of those summer days. It was the cheapest way to travel as a family because the father received great discounts as a transportation company employee.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Kyle deseaba haber jugado unas manos extras de "UNO" con sus hermanos y padres. Un juego muy popular para la época, sonreía cuando recordaba lo lento que era Jack para reaccionar antes de decir la palabra mágica y por ello quedaba con un contingente grande de naipes todo el tiempo. Las peleas eran proverbiales porque Jack se defendía alegando que sí decía la palabra, mientras los hermanos lo negaban y los padres callaban para no inclinar la balanza con ninguno de sus hijos.

> *Kyle wished he had played a few extra hands of "UNO" with his siblings and parents. A very popular game for the time, he smiled when he remembered how slow Jack was to react before saying the magic word and so he was left with a large contingent of cards all the time. The fights were proverbial because Jack would defend himself by claiming that he did say the word, while the brothers would deny it and the parents would keep quiet so as not to tip the scales with either of their children.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tiffany por su parte, evocaba largas horas de tejido de punto con su madre. Era una actividad que le traía mucho paz interna y que su madre le había enseñado a cultivar como parte de una tradición de familia. Recordaba lo más difícil de aprender, era rematar los tejidos cuando finalizaba y esto le causaba impotencia. Sin embargo, su mamá se dedicó a enseñarle con paciencia y amor, hasta el punto de volverse una maestra en tal etapa y superar a la "gurú" que le había entregado sus secretos.    

> *Tiffany, for her part, evoked long hours of knitting with her mother. It was an activity that brought her much inner peace and that her mother had taught her to cultivate as part of a family tradition. She remembered the most difficult part of learning, which was finishing off the knits when she was finished, and this caused her impotence. However, her mother dedicated herself to teaching her with patience and love, to the point of becoming a master at that stage and surpassing the "guru" who had given her her secrets.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jack, distraído, pensaba que nunca habría podido lograr la maestría en el ajedrez, si su padre no le hubiera dedicado horas en esos viajes, para estudiar junto a él la literatura ajedrecística al lado del tablero que siempre llevaba consigo. Le tenía cierta envidia a sus hermanos mayores porque creía sus padres les dedicaban más tiempo; pero todo era falso, cada hijo recibía la atención debida y Jack solo quería más tiempo para él y el ajedrez, un amor que le perseguía todavía.      

> *Jack, distracted, thought that he would never have been able to achieve mastery in chess, if his father had not dedicated hours on those trips, to studying with him the chess literature next to the chessboard that he always carried with him. He was envious of his older brothers because he believed his parents dedicated more time to them; but it was all false, each son received the due attention and Jack only wanted more time for him and chess, a love that still haunted him.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Primero llegó el tren de Tiffany, ella se bajó, fue a por las correas de entrega de equipaje y se sentó en un café a esperar a sus hermano. Mientras, detalló como había cambiado la estación de tren con el pasar del tiempo. Nunca la ves igual porque el progreso es eso: progreso. Donde habían máquinas de *pinball* ahora había expendedoras de alimentos y bebidas (todo sea por sacar algunos dólares de la cartera de los viajeros). En eso, oyó por los altavoces la llegada del tren donde venía Kyle. Se encontraron como habían previsto y esperaron a Jack.      
 
> *First Tiffany's train arrived, she got off, went to get the baggage claim straps, and sat in a café waiting for her brother and sister. Meanwhile, she detailed how the train station had changed over time. You never see it the same because progress is just that: progress. Where there were pinball machines there were now food and drink vending machines (all to get a few dollars out of the travelers' wallets). At that, he heard over the loudspeakers the arrival of the train where Kyle was coming. They met as they had planned and waited for Jack.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Una vez los tres juntos, viajaron en vehículo alquilado hacia la oficina del abogado quienes les esperaba. Subieron al bufete en un edificio del centro y se sentaron a conversar. El letrado les preguntó si querían la lectura del testamento y ellos le detuvieron en seco. Querían primero visitar el apartamento del papá, antes de ir a la funeraria a presentar sus respetos al padre. Cualquier testamento podría esperar, ninguno andaba apurado de dinero, tenían carreras exitosas.  

> *Once the three of them were together, they traveled by rented vehicle to the office of the lawyer who was waiting for them. They went up to the office in a downtown building and sat down to talk. The lawyer asked them if they wanted the reading of the will and they stopped him in his tracks. They wanted to visit dad's apartment first, before going to the funeral home to pay their respects to dad. Any will could wait, none of them were strapped for cash, they had successful careers.*
     
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; El abogado les dijo que el conserje del edificio tenía las llaves del apartamento, porque él no había podido acercarse a buscarlas. La corte le había tenido ocupado y recién el fin de semana tenía dispuesto el tiempo para ello. Los hermanos le excusaron y le dijeron que saldrían inmediatamente hacia la dirección paterna, el abogado les hizo firmar una declaración de descargo por daños al apartamento, porque quería cuidar las espaldas de una demanda. Ellos firmaron y se fueron en búsqueda de las llaves.

> *The lawyer told them that the janitor of the building had the keys to the apartment because he had not been able to get them. The court had kept him busy and he did not have time for it until the weekend. The brothers excused him and told him that they would leave immediately for the parental address, the lawyer made them sign a release for damages to the apartment because he wanted to watch their backs from a lawsuit. They signed and left in search of the keys.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Los tres llegaron al condominio para personas de la tercera edad y tocaron el timbre del conserje. El tipo malencarado les abrió la puerta y les dijo que las llaves del picaporte tenían juego. Que intentaran varias veces al abrir, porque no quería tener que subir a ver un apartamento de persona fallecida. Lo consideraba un tabú y su esposa era la que se encargaba de la limpieza, una vez que sacaban el cadáver del lugar.  

> *The three arrived at the senior condominium and rang the concierge's doorbell. The gruff guy opened the door and told them that the doorknob keys were in play. He told them to try several times to open the door because he didn't want to have to go upstairs to see a deceased person's apartment. He considered it a taboo and his wife was in charge of the cleaning, once the corpse was removed from the place.*

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lucharon para abrir la puerta y una vez adentro, sus quijadas llegaron al piso: su padre se encontraba vivo al pie de los muebles de la sala. Todo había sido una jugarreta de él, para anunciar su enfermedad terminal y hacer un último viaje con ellos por tren. También a él le había llegado la nostalgia por los trenes y quería disfrutar sus últimos días en un viaje familiar.      

> *They struggled to open the door and once inside, their jaws hit the floor: their father was alive at the foot of the living room furniture. It had all been a trick of his, to announce his terminal illness and make one last trip with them by train. He too had become homesick for trains and wanted to enjoy his last days on a family trip.*
