<p><div class="text-justify">En 1938, un joven compositor llamado Billy Strayhorn se acercó a Duke Ellington después de un concierto para enseñarle una de sus composiciones. Se trataba de «Lush Life», una de las mejores baladas de la historia del jazz. Ellington quedó tan impresionado que lo contrató y Strayhorn empezó a escribir arreglos para su big band iniciando así una relación entre ellos que duró hasta su muerte en 1967. Strayhorn se convirtió en el compañero musical de Ellington que contribuyó de manera decisiva a establecer el sonido de su orquesta. Los dos coincidían en que sus intereses no eran comerciales, sino artísticos. A principios de 1939 Ellington volvió a grabar en combo, pero a partir de marzo reanudó la actividad de la big band e hizo una gira por Europa.</div></p>
<p><blockquote><div class="text-justify">In 1938, a young songwriter named Billy Strayhorn approached Duke Ellington after a concert to show him one of his compositions. <p><div class="text-justify">Después llegó el contrabajista Jimmy Blanton, pero su estancia fue de solo unos meses, pues murió de tuberculosis en 1942. Sin embago, fue capaz no solo de dar un nuevo ímpetu a la sección rítmica de Ellington, sino también de cambiar la función del contrabajo en el jazz. Fue el primero en constituir un pulso rítmico, aportar adornos y contramelodías, y tocar de vez en cuando como solista, estableciendo los cimientos del contrabajo en el jazz moderno. La tercera incorporación importante a la big band en aquella época fue la del saxofonista tenor Ben Webster. Tenía un dominio sin precedente de las posibilidades sonoras de su instrumento en el jazz, exhibiendo sonidos entrecortados, quejidos, ladridos, gruñidos, gritos y susurros.</div></p>
<p><blockquote><div class="text-justify">Then came double bassist Jimmy Blanton, but his stay was only a few months, as he died of tuberculosis in 1942. However, he was able not only to give new impetus to Ellington’s rhythm section, but also to change the role of the double bass in jazz. He was the first to build a rhythmic pulse, provide embellishments and countermelodies, and occasionally play as a soloist, laying the foundation for the double bass in modern jazz. The third major addition to the big band at the time was tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. He had an unprecedented mastery of the sonic possibilities of his instrument in jazz, exhibiting choppy sounds, whines, barks, growls, shouts and whispers.</div></blockquote></p>

<p><div class="text-justify">El tema es divertido y sonriente con una estructura armónica AABA y un tiempo medio-rápido. Ellington desarrolla su discurso con intensidad utilizando las armonías del blues. A continuación entra Mingus haciendo un breve solo trepidante y con buen gusto melódico. Ellington vuelve a tocar el tema y comienza un segundo solo con imaginación y creatividad. Luego intercambia dos solos de cuatro compases con Roach y expone el tema por tercera y última vez.</div></p>
<p><blockquote><div class="text-justify">The theme is fun and smiley with an AABA harmonic structure and a medium-fast tempo. Ellington develops his speech with intensity using blues harmonies. Next Mingus comes in taking a brief, fast-paced solo with good melodic taste. Ellington returns to play the theme and starts a second solo with imagination and creativity. Then he trades two four-bar solos with Roach and lays out the theme for the third and last time.</div></blockquote></p>
