# <center>Willem de Kooning, Abstract Expressionism</center>

Today I bring you an artist of abstract expressionism, a genre that arose between contemporary art and 20th-century art, it was developed mainly between the United States, the turn is for Willem de Kooning in my personal opinion the highest representative of American expressionism. Come with me to learn more about his life and work.

Born in Rotterdam - Holland, he came to the United States when he was only 24 years old, he was already a painter and his idea was to position himself in New York City as a notable artist of abstract expressionism. It is difficult to talk about this genre full of art critics and more about this artist, he is considered very much above Pollock, and the art critics of the time held him in very bad esteem.

In his early youth he devoted himself to advertising in the area of decoration, this business led him to be in close contact with art, years later in 1916, he studied at the Academy of fine arts in his hometown, culminating his studies satisfactorily. Already by that time, he stood out as a novel painter and also had a lot of skill for technical drawing.

His first steps in painting varied in technique and genres, concentrating much of his painting in portraits, landscapes, still lifes, but little by little he was inspired and feeling attracted by abstract art. He always moved between figuration and attraction, achieving excellent pieces that brought together the best of geometry and biomorphic form with one or another neoclassical tendency.

In his mature style we can find a lot of figurative art with abstraction, the perfect ingredient to create abstract expressionism, his artistic life was not easy after two long decades and to dedicate himself to different styles and works he managed to exhibit in the MoMA at 45 years of age, his criticism was very good, but nobody was interested in quoting his work.

It was just 4 years later when the curatorial direction of the Moma bought one of his works and that gave him an opening for others to be interested in his art, here we notice the clear influence of galleries and museums that continue to dominate the sphere of the elite in art.

He was usually a very disorganized painter and did not finish his works which earned him many critics from different galleries. Something common in the expressionists was that the majority were alcoholics and de Kooning was no exception, which would accelerate the appearance of Alzheimer's, which made it impossible for him to continue working in painting.

His alcoholism comes from adolescence, his parents were linked to the liquor business, his father was a recognized distributor of beer and wine and his mother had a modest bar, the young man from de Kooning became addicted to alcohol at an early stage of his life.

Although he was not born in the United States, he positioned himself as one of the most outstanding painters of abstract expressionism, highly influenced by European modernism. He formed a group called Greenwich Village formed by other painters such as Stuart Davis Ashley Gorky and John Graham.

He is currently considered one of the great painters of the twentieth century although many do not like his painting, the history of art is so, pure dialectic, does not stop, is always moving with successes and failures, the important thing is the cultural fabric that all artists have built.
