Bombus, New Task, Plucker, Squirrel - Rainy Monday

<b>It was a wonky day yesterday. We got another storm through and the rains started around 11:00am. We have had 3.66 inches of rain this month which is one of our wetter Mays. I was out for my morning wander around the farm and saw this big ass bumblebee on the Houndstongue. I try to leave some of the noxious weeds around for the bees to attack since they love the flowers. I will cut them down after the flowers and most of the stuff gets fed to the sheep.

Our smaller tunnel for the creek is having some issues. The right side entry wall broke some years ago and I had to wedge it in place the best I could. Unfortunately the floods have started to cause the bank to erode behind it. I knew it was a problem but it is worse now.

I will have to gather up a bunch of rocks from around the farm, drop them into the hole and wedge them tight, then I will back fill the soil to rebuild the bank. The road is technically supposed to be county maintained but I feel like I should be doing this as they have better thing to be doing now. There is no immediate threat of collapse or anything so I have time but it is a big task on my list now.

I came across a serious problem in the coop barn. I have my cooler built in the barn and while looking for some wood I noticed this mass of carpenter ants that have made a nest behind the cooler walls.

NOT GOOD!!!

I got on the computer and looked up methods of eradication and found the best home remedy is likely borax but we don't have any. The only thing I have is a big bag of diatomaceous earth. I went and got my monster syringe still partly full of powder and used it to inject/blow the d.e. into and around the entrance. It was great timing as there were winged ones in the mix.

My big project for the day while it was raining was the plucker finger replacement. That is another post in a little while. But I managed to get them all replaced and the plucker back together. It is going to make life soooooo much easier when we start butchering. Tomorrow we get our next order of chickens with mostly broilers so I am making sure the plucker is in fine working order before they are butcher age. So I have a couple months but now is when I have time and opportunity to do the repairs.

Squirrel is getting much more active and is needing to get time out and about. I am having ot be cautious since both the dog and cat would swallow him up which means I am trying to find places for him to roam that they won't have immediate access to. Not the easiest and likely will have to move him off up the hill or something in the next couple of weeks. Not likely to keep the cat from getting him if he is close to the house.

The weather is gone and we are expecting 90F by Saturday. Today I am going to try and get the pole bean garden poles locked in place and the first lines strung. I have more weed eating that needs done, work in the garden on the plastic and some reseeding, then this afternoon we will hopefully go see what might be my new Tacoma.
