My packages box build

I spent the afternoon yesterday working on building the box and finished it today. It is installed just inside our gate with a small walking access opening next to the gate. This will make the delivery drivers lives a bit easier to have a dedicated spot to easily put our packages and not deal with our pit of a yard in winter, plus we are getting a gate opener so the gate will always be closed.

I started out gathering the old t&g planks that I saved after pulling them up from our kitchen floor. I set about cutting the boards down to length for the sides and roof. It was only about 30 pieces to cut and was done quickly. The sides all went together nicely with the help of the bar clamp and the front and back got the peak cut.

The front panel got the door cut from it before I started putting everything together. I was/am surprised at how quickly it went together and oretty cleanly for reclaimed wood. Once I got the shell built I put in pieces of plywood for the floor. When building my sides I was able to flush the bottom and install brackets that I then screwed the floor to so it is nice and solid. You can see my bracing strios in the corner to help stiffen it up.

I got the door mounted after a few failed attempts and it actually fits nice and swings nice. Next step was to start cutting and installing the reclaimed metal roofing I have had for years. I am pretty happy with how it all worked and I did not cut myself once. I wrapped the side panels around the back then put the back panel on over them to help with water tightness.

Today I finished the metal sheeting and then realized I needed to install some runners to make the thing solid and able to be move by hand truck. I tipped the box on its back to install them then was able to lower it off the table with ease. This allowed me to get the roof panels on and the crown.

I found 2 lengths of pressure treated 4x4 and cut four 2 foot long pieces for the legs. I leveled the ground under the tree and removed a chokecherry. I moved it into the general spot, tipped it on its side, then screwed on 2 legs. I then stood it up and slid he other 2 legs under and screwed them in. I ran a couple screws in the back to the tree and it is now solid and not quite level so water will run out if it were to get in.

I cut:
10 pcs 47" long (front/back)
8 pcs 35" long (sides)
10 pcs 19" long (roof)
A bunch of little stripping pieces
4pcs 24" long 4x4
metal roofing

Not bad for 6 hours of building. I have to devise a means of signalling the house when a package is put in it. I will have to setup an arduino fir the task. Sounds like a good winter time task.

It is pretty damn heavy too. The thing weighs over 50 pounds and is attached to the tree to keep it from wandering off or having a slip and fall accident.

Between both yesterday and today I managed to get it done in 6. I would have shaved a bit of time if i would have been able to do it all in one day.  I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
