New Chicks and New Truck - Thursday
<b>6:00 am yesterday morning I got the call from the post office across the highway that our order of chicks had arrived. I got dressed and drove the half mile and brought them home. We got 25 Cornish , 10 Red Ranger, and 5 Copper pullets. The Cornish and Rangers are our meat birds that should be getting butchered starting about July 23rd or at least the week of.

Al the chicks are nice and fat and healthy looking. They all drank as soon as I touched their beaks to the water and all were eating within short order. I found that the hut is a bit too warm in the afternoon so I had to open the ports on the side to allow for cross breeze and keeping the front main door open now that they seem settled.

With the price of meat going up we have made sure to get our system started. The goal is to have these 35 raised out in 8 to 10 weeks, maybe a bit longer on the Rangers, and have the next order of chicks arrive at about 6 weeks. The older ones will have moved outside and will give room for the new ones in the chick hut.

Went to see the truck mid morning and took it for a test drive. I am sold! It's a 2010 Tacoma sport with a 6 foot bed and custom grill and skid plate. We have the process started now but there are a few things to be done first. The windshield is getting replaced, there is recall work on the rear leaf springs which parts are a week and a half out, and the detailing and cleaning. We are waiting for the work to be done before we finalize the paperwork and I can bring it home.

I got the new pulley for the plucker motor while we were wasting some time in the valley. Once I got home it was a quick job to get the pulley on and the motor mounted again. The plucker is now fully ready for the coming butcher season.

The weather has been... moist... and that has given the grass a massive push. I took the weed eater to the inner yard and subsequently gave myself allergic fits. This is the worst time of year for my allergies and getting a coating of grass clippings and particulate doesn't help the situation. Part of the struggle though.

Today I have to get the fence up on the squash garden, drop by the school for packet pickup around 11am, and get some hay figured out for the animals to tide them over for a bit.

Congrats on the new truck!:)

Those piranhas are very vigorous looking, I do not miss the days of raising 250 of those little heathens a year, lol. Glad you got a plucker in the works.

I swear I could see the grass growing while I weedeated today, I have a feeling we’ll both be repeating that job sooner rather than later, I can’t believe how humid and hot it is!

The weather has indeed been... moist.

Nice truck! I am envious. A decade-old Toyota should still be barely even broken in.

It looks like it has been lightly broken in. It's got 126k on it but looks like mostly highway miles so I will have some fun testing it out in the mountains.

We have about 15 that are going to be layers that are 10 weeks old now. These are for meat for us and our friend's family. Selling meat has a number of restrictions that make it easier to just produce for ourselves. Plus we know exactly what goes into the birds.

Oh you raise them for yourself. Quite similar to ours. We also have about 10-15 local indian breed chickens and raise them for the same purpose. But here we don't have such restrictions and can sell few of them to get some income.
