<p>El hombre primitivo no podía explicar la causa de los eclipses.  No lograba comprender la razón capaz de hacer desaparecer del cielo a un astro luminoso como el Sol y cubrir la atmósfera de un extraña penumbra.  Por ese motivo, era lógico que su reacción fuera de pavor y que intentara a través de mitos justificar lo vivido: <i><strong>los antiguos habitantes de la India aseguraban que un dragón fabuloso intentaba comerse al Sol.  Por su parte, los griegos sostenían que  el poderoso Zeus, padre de los dioses y de los hombres, ocultaba al Sol para que las otras divinidades no pudiesen ver,  en esos momentos, lo que estaba ocurriendo en la Tierra.</strong></i>Justificar estos hechos por medio de mitos se repitió en todas las culturas en el mundo, aún en pueblos sin vínculos o contacto entre sí.  Por ejemplo, <em><strong>los primitivos habitantes del Perú trataban los perros aullaran para así ahuyentar a los "espíritus malignos" que trataban de llevarse al Sol o a la Luna.</strong></em></p> 

<p>Con el pasar del tiempo el ser humano comprendió que debería existir una explicación real para aquellos fenómenos.  <strong>Los antiguos griegos</strong> fueron los primeros en separar la superstición de la ciencia y por medio de la observación estudiaron los eclipses en búsqueda de la causa natural de los mismos.</p>

<p>Estudiando los eclipses de Luna, determinaron las dimensiones del satélite y su distancia de la Tierra; del mismo modo aportaron pruebas para demostrar la redondez terrestre. Por su parte, el estudio de los eclipses solares les permitió observar que éstos podían ser anulares o totales, comprendiendo así que la distancia de la Luna era variable. Estos descubrimientos constituyeron un progreso extraordinario para el pensamiento humano. </p> 

<p>La periodicidad de los eclipses hace posible determinarlos con anticipación, de modo que en los distintos observatorios astronómicos, los científicos pueden observarlos y seguir su trayectoria. </p> 

<p>Los eclipses de Sol se han convertido en el mejor medio para poder estudiar el astro luminoso, y así poder saber lo que ocurre en la cromosfera, en la corona, en las emisiones de distintos rayos, etc... Todo esto por medio de instrumentos especializados, ya que la observación al Sol nunca debe ser directa, debido a que las radiaciones del astro pesen causar daños en la vista de modo irremediable.
Por su parte, los eclipses de Luna permiten estudiar la alta atmósfera terrestre, donde los rayos del Sol se refractan hacia la Luna. </p> 

<p>La razón humana halló en estos fenómenos,y en su estudio, sus primeros grandes éxitos y su mejor campo para ejercitar su ingenio investigativo. Citando a <strong>Paul Courdec</strong>: <i>"La observación continuada de los eclipses, el deseo de comprenderlos, y más tarde de predecirlos, fueron el primer móvil de la ciencia, y, sin duda alguna, un factor primordial en el desarrollo intelectual del hombre. "</i> </p> 

<p>Este progreso fue una prueba más de que toda observación científica trae consigo un nuevo hallazgo, el que a su vez abre nuevos caminos para conocer y comprender mejor el mundo que nos rodea. </p> 

<p><center><strong><em>Curiosidades históricas de los eclipses.</em></strong></center></p> 

<p>Los eclipses enseñaron al ser  humano que la noche no es más que una sombra, y que el Sol es la causa exclusiva del día. Desde el siglo V a. de J.C el perfil circular del borde de la sombra de la Tierra sobre la Luna demostró que la Tierra es redonda y que está totalmente aislada en el espacio. </p> 

<p>En su último viaje a las tierras por él descubiertas, Cristóbal Colón se encontró de pronto rodeado de indígenas Caribes. Nada parecía que podía hacer el almirante para lograr que le dejaran en libertad junto con sus compañeros. Entonces, Colón les amenazó con privarlos de la luz de la Luna. Y en efecto, el astro se ocultó,y los indios, aterrorizados ante lo sucedido, dejaron libre a los españoles.  Lo que realmente ocurrió es que era del conocimiento de Colón que en esa fecha ocurriría un eclipse lunar y lo usó para su beneficio. </p> 

<p>El historiador griego Heródoto cuenta la influencia de un elipse poco antes de las Guerras Médicas.  <i><strong>"En el curso de una batalla cuando la acción de guerra se enardecia, el día fue repentinamente cambiado en noche."</strong></i>Este acontecimiento fue previsto por el sabio Tales de Mileto, quien había advertido a los jonios, dándoles la fecha exacta en que iba a ocurrir. Los Medos y Lidios, viendo esto, cesaron los combates y concertaron la paz.</p>

<p>Early man could not explain the cause of eclipses. He could not understand the reason capable of making a luminous star like the Sun disappear from the sky and cover the atmosphere with a strange twilight. For this reason, it was logical that his reaction was one of fear and that he tried to justify what he had experienced through myths: <strong>the ancient inhabitants of India claimed that a fabulous dragon was trying to eat the Sun. For their part, the The Greeks held that the powerful Zeus, father of gods and men, hid the Sun so that the other divinities could not see, at that time, what was happening on Earth.</strong>Justify these facts through myths were repeated in all cultures in the world, even in peoples without ties or contact with each other. For example,<strong>the primitive inhabitants of Peru treated the dogs to howl in order to drive away the "evil spirits" that tried to take the Sun or the Moon.</strong></p> 

<p>With the passing of time, human beings understood that there should be a real explanation for those phenomena. <strong>The ancient Greeks</strong> were the first to separate superstition from science and through observation they studied eclipses in search of their natural cause.</p> 

<p>Studying the lunar eclipses, they determined the dimensions of the satellite and its distance from Earth; in the same way they provided evidence to demonstrate the earth's roundness. For their part, the study of solar eclipses allowed them to observe that they could be annular or total, thus understanding that the distance from the Moon was variable. These discoveries constituted extraordinary progress for human thought. </p> 

<p>The periodicity of the eclipses makes it possible to determine them in advance, so that in the different astronomical observatories, scientists can observe them and follow their trajectory. </p> 

<p>Sun eclipses have become the best way to study the luminous star, and thus be able to know what happens in the chromosphere, in the corona, in the emissions of different rays, etc... All this for through specialized instruments, since the observation of the Sun should never be direct, because the radiations of the star despite causing irremediable damage to the view.
For their part, lunar eclipses allow us to study the high atmosphere of the Earth, where the Sun's rays are refracted towards the Moon. </p> 

<p>Human reason found in these phenomena, and in their study, its first great successes and its best field to exercise its investigative ingenuity. Quoting <strong>Paul Courdec</strong>: <em>"The continuous observation of eclipses, the desire to understand them, and later to predict them, were the first motivation of science, and, without a doubt, a factor paramount in the intellectual development of man."</em> </p> 

<p>All this progress was further proof that every scientific observation brings with it a new discovery, which in turn opens new paths to better understand the world around us. </p> 

<p><center><i><strong>Historical curiosities of eclipses.</strong></i></center></p> 

<p>Eclipses taught the human being that the night is nothing more than a shadow, and that the Sun is the exclusive cause of the day. From the 5th century BC. J.C. the circular profile of the edge of the Earth's shadow on the Moon showed that the Earth is round and that it is totally isolated in space. </p> 

<p> On his last trip to the lands he discovered, Christopher Columbus suddenly found himself surrounded by Carib Indians. There seemed to be nothing the admiral could do to get him released along with his companions. Then, Columbus threatened to deprive them of the light of the Moon. And indeed, the star was hidden, and the Indians, terrified by what had happened, left the Spanish free. What really happened is that it was known to Columbus that a lunar eclipse would occur on that date and he used it for his benefit. </p> 

<p>The Greek historian Herodotus recounts the influence of an ellipse shortly before the Persian Wars. <i><strong>"In the course of a battle when the war action raged, the day was suddenly changed into night."</strong></i>This event was foreseen by the wise Thales of Miletus, who he had warned the Ionians, giving them the exact date it was going to happen. The Medes and Lydians, seeing this, ceased fighting and made peace.</p>
