The new Campaign mode in Splinterlands was released last week. Currently, only one part of the mode is public or playable and this is called “Book 1 - Waur Medge Academy”. The first part is explicitly aimed at new players and is a kind of tutorial. Here the game and the basic mechanics are explained in various chapters. You also get a few Glint and cards, the newly introduced Foundation cards, which are a completely new set of cards. The Foundation cards replace the current starter cards, which were previously available in battles, and can be used without restriction in all modes except Wild and Land.

I have already played through the first part myself and would therefore like to tell you a little about it and mention what I like and don't like about Campaign mode. I would also like to introduce you to some of the Foundation cards, which I think are relatively useful, even if the cards are generally worse than the “normal” cards and can currently only be played at the first level. I think the first page of the first part is very good, as it is very clearly structured and at the same time very simple due to the different chapters. You play the chapters in the given order and get to know Splinterlands and the mechanics in a playful way. After each chapter, you receive the predetermined reward, i.e. the Foundation cards and some Glint, and thus unlock the next chapter.

I also find the overview within a chapter very beginner-friendly. Above all, I would like to emphasize positively that even some helpful pages, such as in this case an overview of all abilities in Splinterlands, are linked. You can save these as bookmarks and look them up again if necessary. This is a great solution, as explaining all the abilities here would overwhelm new players due to the sheer number of them.

In the preparation phases of the individual chapters, there are speech bubbles that give the player tips on how to set up their team. Speech bubbles also appear occasionally during the battles to clarify the mechanics shown.

What I really liked was the short sequence in the first chapter in which “Headmaster Bimblenok” does the introduction. Unfortunately, it's the only sequence of this kind. I would have liked a bit more of this.

❌❌ The biggest criticism I would like to make is the following: I don't quite understand how it took so long for this Campaign mode to be developed and released. I mean, we've been talking about a better new player experience for such an incredibly long time and this is the first big step towards it. Of course the campaign mode is well done, but especially in this day and age with AI, something like this has to be able to be programmed faster. I don't know anything about programming, but my feeling is that the Campaign mode as it exists now is not particularly complex. That's why I hope that Campaign Mode will be developed quickly in the near future and that more parts will be added, because it has potential. ❌❌

# <center>**<u>3 Foundation Cards</u>**</center>

Now I would like to introduce you to three of the new Foundation cards, which I think are really good and can be a real alternative to the “normal” cards in one or two situations. Especially in the lower leagues and level caps, the Foundation cards are not played that rarely.

The first card is **Time Bandit**. This is a rare card from Earth Splinter, which is relatively expensive to play at eight mana. It's also a magic attacker, has only one of this, and only one speed point, but at least it has decent life points. What I find so useful about this card is the ability *Cleanse*, which is very strong in battles with the ruleset *Noxious Fumes* and is generally not very available. In addition, the card can be an alternative in battles with the ruleset *Reverse Speed* thanks to its low speed value.

The next card is an Archon from the Water Splinter, namely **Marlai Singariel**. Like all the other Archons in this set, it costs six mana to play and is therefore more expensive than the classic summoners. What makes this Archon special and sets it apart from the others is that your own monsters get another magic attack. I think magic attack is very strong, so a buff makes it even better. This card also reminds me a lot of Alric Stormbringer, but it costs twice as much, which is justified. A quasi “free” card should not be unnecessarily strong.

The third and last card is **Nim Guard Captain**. It is an ordinary card with melee attack and belongs to the Death Splinter. The defensive stats and speed value look solid, even if the cost of seven mana is relatively high. Thanks to the ability *Void*, the card can absorb opposing magic attacks well, which I think is often very helpful. Accordingly, this card should take the first position in the lineup and benefits from the ruleset *Equalizer*, which improves the life points even further if necessary.

# <center>**<u>Last Words</u>**</center>

All in all, I think the first part of Campaign mode is very successful. The basic mechanics are explained very well to new players and it is far better than the old tutorial. However, I hope that the Campaign mode will be expanded quickly and that it will perhaps also be interesting for more experienced players at some point. What I'm also curious about is how the developers will deal with the Foundation set in the future. Supposedly, more cards will be added to the game and it will be possible to level them up at some point.

In der letzten Woche wurde der neue Campaign Modus in Splinterlands veröffentlicht. Aktuell ist nur ein Teil des Modus öffentlich bzw. spielbar und dieser heißt „Book 1 - Waur Medge Academy“. Der erste Teil soll sich ganz explizit an neue Spieler richten und ist eine Art Tutorial. Hier wird das Spiel und die grundlegende Mechaniken in verschiedenen Kapiteln erklärt. Außerdem erhält man ein paar Glint und Karten, die neu eingeführten Foundation Karten, welche ein ganz neues Set an Karten darstellt. Die Foundation Karten ersetzen die aktuellen Starter Karten, welche bisher in Battles verfügbar waren, und können ohne Einschränkung in alle Modis, bis auf Wild und Land, verwendet werden.

Ich habe den ersten Teil bereits selber durchgespielt und möchte deswegen ein wenig darüber berichten bzw. erwähnen was mir am Campaign Modus gefällt und was nicht. Außerdem möchte ich euch auch noch einige der Foundation Karten vorstellen, welche ich für relativ brauchbar halte, auch wenn die Karten grundsätzlich schon mal schlechter sind als die "normalen" Karten und aktuell nur auf dem ersten Level gespielt werden können. Die erste Seite des ersten Teils finde ich schon mal sehr gut, da sie aufgrund der unterschiedlich Kapitel sehr übersichtlich strukturiert und gleichzeitig sehr einfach gehalten ist. Man spielt die Kapitel in der vorgegeben Reihenfolge und lernt Splinterlands und die Mechaniken so spielerisch kennen. Nach jedem Kapitel erhält man die vorgegebene Belohnung, also die Foundation Karten und etwas Glint, und schaltet so das nächste Kapitel frei.

Auch die Übersicht innerhalb eines Kapitels finde ich sehr anfängerfreundlich. Vor allem positiv hervorheben möchte ich, dass sogar teilweise hilfreiche Seiten, wie in diesem Fall eine Übersicht aller Abilities in Splinterlands, verlinkt werden. So kann man sich diese als Lesezeichen abspeichern und bei Bedarf nochmal nachschlagen. Ein tolle Lösung, da alle Abilities an dieser Stelle zu erklären neue Spieler aufgrund der Vielzahl erschlagen würde.

In den Vorbereitungsphasen der einzelnen Kapitel gibt es Sprechblasen, die dem Spieler Tipps geben, wie man sein Team aufstellen sollte. Und auch während den Battles tauchen vereinzelt  Sprechblasen auf, welche die gezeigten Mechaniken noch einmal verdeutlichen sollen.

Was mir sehr gut gefallen hat, war die kurze Sequenz im ersten Kapitel, in der „Headmaster Bimblenok“ die Einführung übernimmt. Leider ist es aber auch schon die einzige Sequenz dieser Art. Hiervon hätte ich mir gerne etwas mehr gewünscht.

❌❌ Den größten Kritikpunkt, den ich anbringen möchte, ist der folgende: Ich verstehe nicht so ganz, wie es so lange dauern konnte, bis dieser Campaign Modus entwickelt und veröffentlicht wurde. Ich meine wir reden schon so unfassbar lange über eine bessere New Player Experience und das ist der erste große Schritt hierfür. Klar ist der Campaign Modus gut gemacht, aber gerade in der heutigen Zeit mit KI muss so etwas doch schneller programmiert werden können. Ich habe keinerlei Ahnung vom Programmieren, aber mein Gefühl sagt mir, dass der Campaign Modus, so wie er jetzt existiert, nicht sonderlich aufwendig ist. Deswegen hoffe ich, dass der Campaign Modus in der nahen Zukunft schnell weiterentwickelt wird und weitere Teile hinzugefügt werden, denn er hat Potential. ❌❌

# <center>**<u>3 Foundation Karten</u>**</center>

Jetzt möchte ich euch noch drei der neuen Foundation Karten vorstellen, welche ich tatsächlich gut finde und in der ein oder anderen Situationen ein echte Alternative zu den „normalen“ Karten sein können. Den vor allem in den unteren Ligen und Level Caps, werden die Foundation Karten gar nicht so selten gespielt.

Die erste Karte ist **Time Bandit**. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine seltene Karte aus dem Earth Splinter, welche mit acht Mana relativ teuer zu spielen ist. Es ist außerdem ein Magic Attacker, hat hiervon nur einen, und auch nur einen Geschwindigkeitspunkt, dafür aber immerhin ganz ordentliche Lebenspunkte. Was ich an dieser Karte so nützlich finde, ist die Ability *Cleanse*, welche in Battles mit dem Ruleset *Noxious Fumes* sehr stark ist und allgemein wenig verfügbar ist. Außerdem kann die Karte dank des niedrigen Geschwindigkeitswert in Battles mit dem Ruleset *Reverse Speed* eine Alternative sein.

Bei der nächsten Karte handelt es sich um einen Archon aus dem Water Splinter, und zwar **Marlai Singariel**. Wie alle anderen Archons aus diesem Set, kostet sie sechs Mana zu spielen und ist damit teurer als die klassischen Summoner. Was diesen Archon besonders macht und von den anderen hervorhebt, ist dass die eigenen Monster einen weiteren Magic Attack erhalten. Magic Attack finde ich sehr stark, deswegen macht ein Buff das ganze natürlich noch besser. Außerdem erinnert mich diese Karte stark an Alric Stormbringer, kostet aber auch doppelt so viel, was auch gerechtfertigt ist. Eine quasi "gratis" Karte sollte nicht unnötig stark sein.

Die dritte und letzte Karte ist **Nim Guard Captain**. Es ist eine gewöhnliche Karte mit Melee Attack und gehört zum Death Splinter. Die defensiven Werte und der Geschwindigkeitswert sehen solide aus, auch wenn die Kosten von sieben Mana relativ hoch sind. Durch die Ability *Void* kann die Karte gegnerische Magic Attacks gut abfangen, was ich oft sehr hilfreich finde. Dementsprechend sollte diese Karte die erste Position in der Aufstellung einnehmen und profitiert vom Ruleset *Equalizer*, was gegebenfalls die Lebenspunkte nochmal verbessert.

# <center>**<u>Letzte Worte</u>**</center>

Alles in allem finde ich den ersten Teil des Campaign Modus doch sehr gelungen. Neuen Spielern werden hier die grundlegenden Mechaniken sehr gut erklärt und es ist weit besser als das alte Tutorial. Ich hoffe aber, dass der Campaign Modus schnell erweitert wird und vielleicht auch irgendwann für erfahrenere Spieler interessant ist. Worauf ich auch gespannt bin ist, wie die Entwickler mit dem Foundation Set in Zukunft umgehen. Angeblich sollen hier weitere Karten ins Spiel kommen und diese auch irgendwann gelevelt werden können.

I was surprised at how semi good the Foundation cards actually were to be honest. And I love that there is now a dedicated 'set' for the "Starter Cards" so to speak.

Yes, I think that's good too. Sure, the cards will be useless in the upper leagues, but they're designed for beginners and I think they're pretty solid for that.
