Teach Your Cat to Sit
You can easily teach Kitty to sit on command. All it takes is a few minutes and small tasty rewards. Hey, nobody wants to work for nothing!

The only time your cat won't be interested in learning this trick is when he/she's sleeping, and right after she's eaten. And even if she's sleeping she might wake up and perform if something appealing is put under her nose.

### First Step--Create Mood and Start the Association
Most cats like small pieces of ham, the sliced kind you put in sandwiches. Tear off several dime-sized pieces. Wait until you see your cat sitting, which they do rather often. You're not going to be asking it to do anything unnatural!

Moving quickly hold the ham right above the cat's nose so that he has to look slightly up, say, "Sit" (yes, I know, he's already sitting...) and immediately let him have it. It's okay if he gets up out of "sit" to eat it once you give it to him. Hopefully he'll want more, and you can tease him by letting him smell the ham and follow it.

### Second Step--Put Him in "Sit"
Once you've got his attention, hold the ham just above his nose so that he has to look up at it. This assumes that he's up and standing or walking, trying to get the ham. Gently take his hindquarters and push them down (again, gently) so that he's in a sitting position, say, "Sit" and give him the ham. Do this about five times, then pat him and let him go on his way. It's best to stop when he's still wanting more.

### Third Step--Practice, Practice, Practice
Do the push-him-down-say-sit-give-reward as many times a day as you can find time for. Many short lessons are much better than a long one. Two minutes is long in cat time.

After the first day, wait a moment after you say, "Sit" to give her the ham. Give her a chance to think and to do it. When she does sit it will be by accident at first, so reward that right away so she makes the connection: "I sit, I get ham." If she doesn't get the idea yet, say, "Sit" again, push her butt down, and give it to her.

After she's consistently sitting you won't have to use a treat each time. Pretend you have the ham in your fingers, hold them where you used to hold the ham above her nose, and say, "Sit." Say it in a nice tone of voice--she's your friend. When she sits pat her and tell her she's pretty. But do continue to use the ham once in a while to refresh her memory and keep her motivated. Don't get all authoritarian and try to make Kitty sit if she doesn't want to. Remember she's her own Free Spirit and that's what makes it so special when she does do what you ask. Sometimes he might be doing it because he loves you, and not just for the ham.
