> Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is more than I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
Genesis 4:13-15 NIV
### I do not know about you, but I've always wondered what this sign was. Through this studies. I discovered what it was, what it means and I'd like to share it with you.
To understand what the sign was, we should look at Ezekiel in the Bible.
> Ezekiel 9:4 KJV
And the Lord said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.
In this passage, God gives Ezekiel a vision of what He is going to do to those who do horrendous deeds. And again we see God's grace for the people who serve Him and love him as all the people who did not have the mark was killed but those with the mark was saved.
### What was the sign and what does it mean?
In both of the above passages, the Hebrew word for the "mark" is "tav", which is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. And what is very interesting about this sign is. In the **Ancient Hebrew alphabet**, the letter *tav* was written as a picture of two crossed sticks, a cross if you will, and is a sign of a covenant.

There are so many things that came to my mind after discovering this.
Because the flesh and the spirit are contradictory to each other, we should not allow the flesh to overcome the spirit.
Cain could not have overlooked the fact that his brother would take his position. Similarly, we should not be jealous if someone else took over our position. Even though this is being done in an unfair manner and we do not agree with it. God warns us here against envy and jealousy and that jealousy can lead to great sin. But we also learn of God's love and grace that He shows when you repent after committing sin.
When we take a closer look at the mark that God gave Cain to protect him that no one would kill him we see that it was a foreshadowing to the cross of Jesus, which would bring redemption for everyone that believes in Jesus Christ. So that none of us will die but will be saved through the redemption that Jesus Christ accomplished for us on the cross.
### All the glory and honor belongs to God for what He has done for us through His Son Jesus Christ.
I really hope that you were blessed as much as myself by this series of 3 posts about Cain and Abel.
