# Scarlett's Space Adventure

Cintya Anderson cannot believe her eyes. After she assimilates that exactly what she's looking at is happening, she shouts in desperation to her companions:

— Hey, guys, we've got a serious problem!

Edward, Sam, and Patrick look at her with surprise and some concern about the alarming nature of the girl's call. Seeing them surprised and curious, she motions for them to look out of the windows. Quickly, everyone is stunned. The Earth re-entry space capsule, anchored in docking port number two of the international space station, slowly floats away into space, with its characteristic front hatch still raised and a clear and definite tendency to fall toward Earth. Immediately, chaos erupts in the space station. While Sam floats at high speed towards the hatch where the capsule should be, Cintya and Patrick move in the same way towards the cockpit and control cabin to try to understand what is happening. At that moment, Edward asks:

— Where is Scarlett?

— My God, she was in the capsule!" answers Cintya and shudders at the thought of the youngest and most tender astronaut of this mission, who was doing some repairs inside the capsule for the return to Earth. After making sure that she is not in the station, they try everything they can to communicate with the capsule without success. After several minutes of frantic hustle and bustle, Sam, the astronaut commander of the mission, communicates with mission control on Earth:

— Houston, we have a problem!

In a few moments, the chaos prevailing in the space station extends to each of the units in charge of controlling all the details, processes, and systems for the complete operation of the station and the safety of its occupants. While several analysts perform research and study tasks to find out what is happening, others try to contact the capsule, and some others review and study the telemetry data of each of the components of the station and the capsule. The more senior and responsible ones, communicate with the members still on the station to get details and with the senior heads of the space program to update them on the emergency situation. The return capsule has undocked from the space station and has begun an uncontrolled descent into the atmosphere, with an astronaut inside it, with whom they have not been able to communicate and that, if something is not done immediately, the consequences will be disastrous for the operation of the station and the space program and for Scarlett's life.

Some 300 kilometers from the mission control center in Houston, Richard Taylor, the space station's absolute program manager, has been contacted while resting after completing the mission to bring the five astronauts to the station just under 6 days ago and informed of the serious situation. Due to some bureaucratic and logistical red tape, it will take him about two hours to return immediately to the mission control center while a helicopter is cleared, equipped, and dispatched to search for him. His presence is critical, as Taylor is the only person who can access the capsule's operating and control systems as it floats back to earth. In his desperation to reach the control center, he has taken his eldest son's lavish Chevrolet Camaro sports car and is now in a frantic high-speed race on the interstate highway, pursued by several police vehicles.

Taylor contacts the local authorities and after indicating the emergency situation, the patrol cars follow him at high speed, clearing the tracks so that he can get to Houston as soon as possible. Thanks to his former experience as a race car driver on the NASCAR and Indianapolis circuits, and escorted by a large fleet of police vehicles, he manages to arrive at the mission control center just as the helicopter that was supposed to pick him up had barely 15 minutes in the air. He rushes into the building and immediately unlocks and accesses all the control systems of the re-entry capsule.

— Houston control center to the re-entry capsule. Scarlett, if you can hear us, press the three small buttons on the left side of the screen on the far right," Scarlett hears inside the capsule and immediately complies with the instructions.

— This is Scarlett, can you hear me," she answers in a somewhat frightened voice. Immediately, there is a great cheer through the headset, celebrating the positive contact with the drifting capsule. Scarlett is instructed to manually reactivate all the capsule's flight systems, put on one of the spacesuits, get into one of the seats, secure herself with the seat belts and relax. After performing all these actions, the capsule proceeds to perform all the necessary operations for a safe re-entry to earth, all automatically and autonomously, bringing the perplexed astronaut back safe and sound.

After an exhaustive investigation, it was determined that there was a general failure in the systems and program codes controlling the operation of the capsule, which triggered its undocking from the station. Scarlett was treated as a heroine since if she had not been inside the cabin, the capsule's systems could not have been manually reactivated, which would have led to its inevitable fall and subsequent destruction. Although the trend in space travel is toward greater autonomy of spacecraft and control systems, with little or no human intervention, Scarlett's experience has served to demonstrate that anything can go wrong when it comes to space travel.

## La Aventura Espacial de Scarlett

Cintya Anderson no puede dar crédito a lo que sus ojos ven. Después de asimilar que está ocurriendo exactamente lo que está mirando, le grita con desespero a sus compañeros:

— ¡Hey, chicos! ¡Tenemos un grave problema!

Edward, Sam y Patrick la observan con extrañeza y cierta preocupación por lo alterado de la llamada. Ella, al verlos sorprendidos y curiosos, les hace señas para que se asomen a las ventanillas. Rápidamente, todos quedan estupefactos. La cápsula espacial de reingreso a la tierra, anclada en el puerto de atraque número dos de la estación espacial internacional, lentamente se aleja flotando en el espacio, con su característica compuerta delantera aun levantada y una clara y definida tendencia a caer hacia la tierra. De inmediato, estalla el caos en la estación espacial. Mientras Sam se dirige flotando a gran velocidad hacia la escotilla donde debería estar la cápsula, Cintya y Patrick se mueven de igual manera hacia la cabina de mando y control para tratar de entender que está sucediendo, En ese momento, Edward pregunta:

— ¿Dónde está Scarlett?

—¡Dios mío! ¡Estaba en la cápsula!— contesta Cintya y se estremece al pensar en la más joven y tierna astronauta de esta misión, la cual se encontraba realizando algunas labores de arreglos dentro de la cápsula de retorno a la tierra. Luego de asegurarse de que efectivamente no se encuentra en la estación, tratan por todos los medios de comunicarse con la cápsula sin éxito alguno. Luego de varios minutos de frenético ajetreo, Sam, el astronauta comandante de la misión, se comunica con control de misión en la tierra:

— ¡Houston, tenemos un problema!

En pocos instantes, el caos imperante en la estación espacial, se extiende a cada una de las dependencias encargadas de controlar todos los detalles, procesos y sistemas para el completo funcionamiento de la estación y la seguridad de sus ocupantes. Mientras varios analistas realizan tareas de investigación y estudio para averiguar qué está sucediendo, otros tratan de contactar con la cápsula, algunos más revisan y estudian los datos de telemetría de cada uno de los componentes de la estación y la cápsula. Los más veteranos y responsables, se comunican con los miembros aun en la estación para obtener detalles y con los altos jefes del programa espacial para ponerlos al tanto de la situación de emergencia. La cápsula de retorno a la tierra, se ha desacoplado de la estación espacial y ha iniciado un descenso sin control hacia la atmósfera, con una astronauta dentro de ella, con la que no se han podido comunicar y que, si no se hace algo de inmediato, las consecuencias serán desastrosas para el funcionamiento de la estación y el programa espacial y para la vida de Scarlett.

A unos 300 kilómetros del centro de control de misión en Houston, Richard Taylor, el jefe absoluto de programa de la estación espacial, ha sido contactado mientras descansaba, después de completar la misión de llevar a los cinco astronautas a la estación hace poco menos de 6 días e Informado de la grave situación. Gracias a su antigua experiencia como conductor de vehículos de carrera en los circuitos de NASCAR e Indianápolis y, escoltado por toda una gran flota de vehículos policiales, logra llegar al centro de control de misión justo cuando el helicóptero que debía buscarlo apenas tenía 15 minutos en el aire. Entra corriendo al edificio y de inmediato desbloquea y accede a todos los sistemas de control de la cápsula de reingreso.

— Centro de control Houston a la cápsula de reingreso. Scarlett, si nos escuchas, presiona en la pantalla de la extrema derecha, los tres pequeños botones en el lado izquierdo de la misma, — escucha Scarlett dentro de la cápsula y de inmediato cumple con las instrucciones.

— Aquí Scarlett, ¿Me oyen?— contesta con una voz un tanto asustada. De inmediato, se escucha una gran algarabía a través del auricular, celebrando el contacto positivo con la cápsula a la deriva. Le indican las instrucciones a Scarlett para que, de forma manual, reactive todos los sistemas de vuelo de la cápsula, se coloque uno de los trajes espaciales, se ubique en uno de los asientos, asegurándose con los cinturones de seguridad dispuestos y que se relaje. Después de realizar todas estas acciones, la cápsula procede a ejecutar todas las operaciones necesarias para el reingreso a la tierra de forma segura, todo de forma automática y autónoma, trayendo de regreso sana y salva a la perpleja astronauta.

Después de una exhaustiva investigación, se determinó un fallo general en los sistemas y códigos de los programas que controlan la operación de la cápsula, lo que desencadeno su desacoplamiento de la estación. Scarlett fue tratada como una heroína, ya que de no encontrarse dentro de la cabina, no se hubieran podido reactivar de forma manual los sistemas de la cápsula, lo que hubiera generado su inevitable caída y posterior destrucción. Aunque la tendencia de los viajes espaciales en una mayor autonomía de las naves y sistemas de control, sin casi o nada de intervención humana, la experiencia de Scarlett ha servido para demostrar que cualquier cosa puede salir mal, cuando de viajar al espacio se trata.
