<html> <h1>Los Angeles Based Lawyer Jeffery Berns Identified as the IRS Challenger in the Coinbase User Data Case.</h1> <p>http://i.imgur.com/E0EZqMY.jpg</p> <p>A coindesk.com article today identifies Jeffery Berns as the challenger to the IRS requesting access to Coinbase user data. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is a managing partner of Berns Weiss LLP and President of Berns Inc., formerly Digital Money Corp.</p> <p>According to the coindesk.com article:</p> <blockquote> Lawyers for Berns argued that the filing wasn’t the result of an effort to protect himself from any kind of tax investigation, writing:</blockquote> <blockquote><em>“Instead, Movant’s intent is to protect the interests of all of Coinbase’s customers who are subject to this overbroad summons, even though the IRS has made no showing that any of them have engaged in suspect tax-avoidance conduct.”</em></blockquote> <p>It appears that Berns Inc. is the company behind ethnews.com, which is described as (a) "Source for all Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), and blockchain news, prices, events and more." So, he appears to be somewhat familiar with the digital currency space. I'm glad that someone with some knowledge and experience related to digital currency is leading the charge against the IRS. When it was first reported and we weren't sure who the "Coinbase customer" responsible was, I was really curious to see who may be behind this.</p> <p>It looks like we now know who is behind filing the motion and what the intentions are.
