El mundial de futbol de la FIFA es un evento maravilloso, que sucede cada 4 años. Es imposible no dejarse llevar por la fiebre del futbol que está pronto a comenzar. Esta vez es Qatar la sede elegida para la edición 2022, cosa que causo polémica desde el momento en que fue anunciada. Y no solo por ser el primer país islámico que prepara la justa de las naciones, sino por la manera en que, según consiguieron, quedarse con la sede.

Son muchos los rumores que apuntaban a que los directivos de la FIFA, recibieron sobornos millonarios para que la nación del golfo pérsico se quedara con la sede del mundial. Pero, lo que más ha causado polémica es la manera en la cual se construyeron los estadios: con mano de obra extranjera, inmigrantes indefensos que sufren de maltratos y abusos, llevando a muchos hasta la muerte. 

No menos polémico han sido los comentarios homofóbicos de varios de los embajadores anfitriones, recordemos que este es un país donde acostarse con personas del mismo sexo puede significar una pena de hasta 7 años en prisión. Por si esto fuera poco, las mujeres también tendrán que llevar “ropa recatada” y ser tuteladas por una figura masculina. Esto no me sorprende de una nación islámica, pero, ¿qué no sabíamos de esto desde mucho antes?

Esto es lamentable, sobre todo porque va más allá de todo lo positivo que puede brindarnos un mundial. Yo soy gran apasionado de los mundiales, recuerdo poco el Mundial de Futbol de Francia 1998, aquel donde Ricky Martin cantaba la “copa de la vida” y en la cual la copa se quedaba en el país anfitrión. Pero si me acuerdo de la emoción que significaba para mí comprar mi Álbum Panini del Mundial.

Recuerdo también aquel desastroso mundial del 2002, donde Corea y Japón compartieron la sede y Brasil se convertía en la pentacampeona del mundo. Casi todos los juegos en esa oportunidad fueron en la madrugada o muy de mañana por la diferencia horaria. Rememoro la pasión que se sentía en las calles de Venezuela y la ilusión que nos daba llegar a un mundial.

Many rumors have suggested that FIFA executives received millionaire bribes so that the Persian Gulf nation would get the World Cup venue. But what has caused the most controversy is the way in which the stadiums were built: with foreign labor, helpless immigrants who suffer mistreatment and abuse, leading many to death. 

No less controversial have been the homophobic comments of several of the host ambassadors, remembering that this is a country where sleeping with people of the same sex can mean a penalty of up to 7 years in prison. As if this were not enough, women will also have to wear "demure clothing" and be tutored by a male figure. This does not surprise me from an Islamic nation, but what didn't we know about this long before?

This is unfortunate, especially since it goes beyond all the positives that a World Cup can bring us. I am a great fan of World Cups, I remember the 1998 World Cup in France, where Ricky Martin sang the "cup of life" and the cup stayed in the host country. But I do remember the emotion it meant for me to buy my Panini World Cup Album.

I also remember that disastrous 2002 World Cup, where Korea and Japan shared the venue and Brazil became the pentacampeona of the world. Almost all the games on that occasion were played in the early morning or very early in the morning due to the time difference. I remember the passion that was felt in the streets of Venezuela and the illusion that it gave us to reach a World Cup.

Han pasado 20 años de aquel mundial de 2002 y nuestra selección nunca ha conseguido su pase en las eliminatorias para ninguna de las 4 ediciones posteriores. Pero, la emoción también se siente como si nuestro país fuera una de las selecciones en competencia. Y recuerdos vienen y van de aquella edición del 2006, una en la cual yo, que comenzaba la secundaria, pude disfrutar muchísimo. 

Aquella final electrizante entre Francia e Italia, aquella prórroga cuando ambos equipos estaban empatados, la despedida nefasta que tuvo Zinedine Zidane, el cabezazo a Marco Materazzi y la expulsión con una tarjeta roja por parte del árbitro de aquel día: Horacio Elizondo. Italia, se llevaba la copa a casa y nosotros soñábamos con Sudáfrica 2010.

Una copa que venía con la premisa de ser la primera realizada en continente africano, una que también disfruté partido tras partido y donde España le ganó a la naranja mecánica 0 a 1, en un partido polémico amenizado por la clausura y Shakira con su Waka Waka. Y luego, 4 años después, la copa regresaba a Suramérica: Brasil con un mundial sin precedentes donde la pentacampeona no lograría llegar a la final.

Por el contrario, la Verdeamarela, llegó con problemas a la semifinal, donde caería ante una Alemania que le propino 7 goles a 1, uno de los cuales fue anotado por la leyenda de los mundiales Miroslav Klose. Al final, Lionel Messi y una Argentina que soñaba con la copa, se midieron en contra de la Alemania de Joachim Löw, con la cual perderían con un marcador 1 a 0. 

Y en última estancia, el mundial llegaba en 2018 a Rusia, un país bastante polémico que venía de sembrar el terror en otra guerra y al cual se le otorgó la oportunidad de ser sede con denuncias de pagar sobornos a los directivos de la FIFA. En esta oportunidad, Francia ganaría su segunda copa del mundo y una valiente Croacia, se quedaría como bicampeona del mundo.

Ahora, está por comenzar una nueva edición mucho más expuesta en redes sociales que otras ediciones y donde los ojos del mundo entero estarán puestos sobre el respeto a los derechos humanos por parte de Qatar. También sobre la posibilidad de viajar a un país con precios prohibitivos para los hinchas en cuanto a hospedajes. Todo parece apuntar a que este mundial será bastante polémico, sobre todo después de que Qatar contratara a cientos de personas para que simularan ser parte de la hinchada de los países en competencia.

Por increíble que parezca, todavía sigo esperando a que el espíritu deportivo se apodere de la justa de las naciones y que podamos disfrutar del futbol en su máxima expresión. La suerte está echada y espero que gane una de nuestras selecciones, mientras tanto en Venezuela seguimos soñando con un mundial.
