<P><div class="text-justify">I think we can all agree on one thing that I intend to state categorically in these lines: no rock band in the history of music has the power, versatility and elegance of The Police. In this sense, this band is absolutely transcendental, as not only did they set records wherever they went, but years, many, many years after their break-up, we can still recognise them just by listening to a couple of seconds of almost any of their songs. Without a doubt, this band is beauty, talent, fantasy, dedication, passion; and of course, they have done something that only a handful of artists have managed to do: normalise the great. Just like that, as if it were nothing, with surprising ease. Here, a brief account of the career of these guys...</div></P>

><P><div class="text-justify">Creo que todos vamos a estar de acuerdo con una cosa que pienso afirmar categóricamente en estas líneas: ninguna banda de rock, en la historia de la música, tiene el poder, la versatilidad y la elegancia de The Police. En este sentido, esta agrupación es absolutamente trascendental, ya que no sólo marcó récords adónde sea que fuese, sino que años, muchísimos años después de su separación, aún podemos reconocerlos con tan sólo oír un par de segundos de casi cualquiera de sus canciones. Sin lugar a dudas, esta banda es belleza, talento, fantasía, dedicación, pasión; y por supuesto, han hecho algo que sólo un puñado de artistas han logrado: normalizar lo grandioso. Así, como si nada, con una facilidad sorprendente. Aquí, un pequeño recuento de la carrera de estos sujetos...</div></P>

<P><div class="text-justify">To understand The Police, we have to go back, inexorably, to the late 70s. A period marked by two trends that had a huge impact: disco music, and the "Motown" sound (also known as Motown music), the latter produced entirely in Detroit, from where it adapted its characteristic name. Now, three skinny, irreverent and talented Englishmen decide to get together one day and start doing covers of famous jazz and ska tunes (note very well the influence of black music on each of the members of The Police) but they add a subtle but distinguished seal of quality: they play with the tempos and with the arrangements of the melodies. And, like good British boys, they're usually great on backing vocals.</div></P>

<P><div class="text-justify">This is the birth, in an extremely simplified form, of this band, this is how it all came about. From the very beginning, the band's bassist and lead vocalist, Sting, takes the public leadership of the trio and starts composing. He does so, inspired by the England of his time. A bit chaotic, uncertain, with high rates of violence and protests, but without losing the pop touch, which makes us all love the Police. And this is not a minor fact. On the contrary, these guys are such geniuses, absolute pioneers, that one of their most famous songs "Every Breath You Take" is not really understood as it should be understood. Everyone tends to perceive this particular track as a "beautiful song of love and longing" but it's actually the graphic description of a voyeurist...</div></P>

><P><div class="text-justify">Y es que para entender a Police, hay que remontarnos, inexorablemente, a finales de los 70's. Una época marcada por dos corrientes que impactaron fortísimo: la música disco, y el sonido "Motown" (también conocida como música de la Motown), esta última producida enteramente en Detroit, de donde adaptó su nombre característico. Ahora bien, tres flacuchos, ingleses, irreverentes y talentosos, deciden formarse un día y empezar a hacer versiones de famosos temas de jazz y de ska (nótese muy bien la influencia de la música negra en cada uno de los integrantes de The Police) pero le añaden un sutil pero distinguido sello de calidad: juegan con los tempos y con los arreglos de las melodías. Además, como buenos chicos británicos, suelen ser buenísimos con los coros.</div></P> 

><P><div class="text-justify">Este es el nacimiento, de una forma extremadamente simplificada de esta banda, así es como surge todo. Desde un principio, el bajista de la agrupación y también vocalista principal, Sting, toma el liderazgo público del trío y empieza a componer. Lo hace, inspirado en la Inglaterra de su época. Algo caótica, incierta, con índices de violencia y protestas altos, pero sin perder el toque pop, que hace que todos amemos a Police. Y esto no es un dato menor. Al contrario, estos tipos son tan genios, absolutos pioneros, que uno de sus temas más famosos "Every Breath You Take" realmente no es entendido como debería entenderse. Todo el mundo suele percibir este tema en particular como una "bella canción de amor y de anhelo" pero es en realidad la descripción gráfica de un voyeurista...</div></P>

<P><div class="text-justify">In fact, the internet abounds with cases where the above is explained in detail. However, that is another curious aspect that is linked to The Police. They are a band that people frequent because they bring joy. I literally dare anyone to leave me in the comments if, almost instantly, they don't feel that rush of joy when listening to almost any song by these guys. And that's no coincidence, quite the contrary. It's effort, dedication and technique; lots and lots of technique. It's designed (mostly in the instrumental arrangements, of which there are many, many) to generate those emotions of joy and ecstasy in the listener's psyche: frankly, I surrender. They are one of my favourite bands.</div></P>

><P><div class="text-justify">De hecho, en internet abundan los casos donde esto que explico en el párrafo anterior es detalladamente explicado. No obstante, ese es otro aspecto curioso que está ligado con The Police. Son una banda que la gente suele frecuentar porque brindan alegría. Literalmente, reto a quién sea a dejarme en los comentarios, si casi al instante, no sienten ese subidón de alegría al escuchar casi cualquier tema de estos muchachos. Y eso no es casualidad, todo lo contrario. Es empeño, dedicación y técnica; muchísima técnica. Está pensada (mayoritariamente en los arreglos instrumentales, que son muchísimos) para generar esas emociones de júbilo y éxtasis en el psique del oyente: francamente, me rindo. Son de mis bandas favoritas.</div></P>

<P><div class="text-justify">Likewise, they are one of the bands that played the most with musical multi-capacity. That is to say, the level of versatility and ability to master styles is a hallmark of this band. There are songs more related to classic punk rock, as well as soul ballads. And not to mention the inexhaustible influence that The Police have with instrumental jazz, it's simply amazing. They say that behind the pleasure, there is always magic. And what better example of this saying than playing a playlist of The Police? A pleasure to the ears, a delight to the senses; a virtue of human genius. And, as it is written in the title of this post.... These guys normalised the routine of the extraordinary with their music, their art, their enormous talent.</div></P>

Es decir, el nivel de versatilidad y capacidad de dominio de estilos, es un sello de esta banda. Hay temas más relacionados con el punk rock más clásico, como baladas propias del soul. Y ni hablar de la inagotable influencia que The Police guarda con el jazz instrumental, es sencillamente una pasada. Dicen que detrás del placer, siempre hay magia ¿Y qué mejor ejemplo de este refrán que poner un playlist de The Police? Un placer a los oídos, un goce de los sentidos; una virtud de la genialidad humana. Y es que, como está escrito en el título de este post... Estos muchachos, normalizaron la rutina de lo extraordinario con su música, su arte, su enorme talento.</div></P>
