Is age just a number...?

Today, I'm celebrating my 45th birthday. I've received lovely presents from my loved ones (which I had ordered myself 🤣) and the preparations for the visit later this afternoon are done.
That gives me a bit of time to share some reflections with you about age.

# Old people
When I was young (read: under 20), people over 40 seemed very old. Like dinosaurs. I used to call them wrinklesaurusses 😀
And now, on my way towards 50 years on this planet, I actually don't feel that old at all. 
I sometimes wonder if it is because people nowadays are getting older and look and act younger or that it maybe is just me. 
It is true that the given life expectancy of people has increased in the past decades. People often stay fit for a longer time. 

But maybe it also is something personal. I like to stay fit and I also like to keep doing fun things. I think it keeps me 'young'. But maybe others would call it childish 🤣
When we plan a family activity with kids, I almost always want to join them. And they want me to join them too. Last year during our holiday we went to an abstacle course in a lake. And see this big kid (me) jumping from this tower into the water.

When I was young my parents never did things like that. We did do activities like that, but they always were sitting on the side, drinking their coffee. It is not a judgement by the way. I really enjoyed the fact that I could do these things. Only I'm doing it a bit different now.

# Another generation
At first I also thought it could be a generational thing. That it wasn't normal to do these kind of things. But also nowadays I often see parents that are way younger than me, not doing these kinds of things. 
Yes, there are some people that have injuries or are, to say it nicely, are less athletic, but that is not always the case. 
I'm happy that I am fit enough to keep doing these these things with my kids. And... that they like it that I do these things, because that could also be a reason for parents not to join.

Yes, it's just a number. I'm almost your age; I'll be 45 in August. Firstly, I have to say I don't feel like I'm approaching 50 in a few years. It actually feels younger at this stage of life. But I think everyone experiences it differently depending on the situation.

We all have the child still in us. Each of us expresses it in different ways. For me, it mostly happens when hiking in the woods and fields with my camera. Everything becomes new and exciting again. I can be amazed just like a little boy again! It becomes like the world has opened its secrets for me and every picture particularly captures that childlike wonder. Probably one of the most intense ways to perceive the world at our age. Something like this.

It is true, age is but a number, I am well advanced in years ahead of you, soon to hit 70, but though the body is telling me to slow down, I can't and I wont. I hang around with people who are a lot younger than me, mostly around your age and that is where I belong. I can never see me mixing with old people they bore me to fucking death. I don't want all that negativity rubbing off on me.

I guess I also have freedom to roam, do what I want when I want, the freedom of no longer being a wage slave. AND I can still 'entertain" the ladies LOL, the oldest swinger in town!

Age is an integer, or a string if you use language instead.of mathematics to describe it. 

However, your age, from a biological context very much has an impact on your quality.of life. 

When I was at the gym, using the cable row machines, a bloke asked to work in with me. We got to chatting. He was 61. 

He told me that he'd been working out all of his life, and that he had won body building contests in his youth. 

He approached the world with a (literal) strength and energy that only someone who could be described as biologically young only could.

We chatted about physique as we exchanged use of the machine, and well, while I won't be winning any body building contests (and I'm beyond my own youth as well) his encouragement, confidence and vitality were totally inspirational.

You don't get that sort of generational connection by sitting in the lobby drinking coffee.

Congratulations! Being 44 myself we're in the same boat, according to my wife, I never grow up and she has three kids (our two daughters and me)
When it's not too high I too join them on crazy things, especially on holidays, throw them around in the swimming pool and do crazy things to a point other adults are side-eying me 😁

Another reflection: Middle aged men are far more sportive than middle aged women!
