The decentralized cloud storage initiative, Sia, announced the launch of version v1.3.3 for its entire community, which includes as its main feature its new live video playback function on the local network.
The launch was communicated through its Twitter account, where the blockchain project for decentralized storage highlighted that this new feature will allow users to store and transmit videos at a lower cost than other Web platforms. Also, they consider that this is a first step to offer a "basic functionality" in the network and improve the loading times of the files.

Sia users can try the new function of the platform by downloading on their computer an instance of Sia that allows to run the platform and manage the files that are uploaded to the network. In this way, when the user uploads a file to the network, Sia will send it divided into several pieces (around 30 or more) that will be encrypted, separated and uploaded on several servers.
When the file is loading, other users can view what is shared through a URL that can be played in any application that supports videos (VLC, for example), since the Sia API provides a transmission endpoint in a module called lessee. That is, a place where the files of all the servers are obtained; they are deciphered, assembled and transmitted at the moment. All this occurs on the fly, without the need for the file to be stored momentarily on the disk of the instance of Sia.
In this sense, this new update will allow retransmissions of a video and share them among several Sia users, planning in the future to even share it outside the Sia network. All this can be done at the moment since the video is not stored on the Sia disk, but encrypted in the blockchain. Also, the file can be deleted locally after loading, since it would be secured in the servers.
To carry out these transmissions, users must use their Siacoin, token of the platform that will allow them to rent host storage that will form intelligent contracts in Sia's blockchain to store and share files. Similarly, the statement highlights that now videos will only take 5 to 10 minutes to shit, after this period the files can be shared without major setbacks.
The company believes that with this new capability of live playback the platform now has a real business use, stating that platforms such as Netflix or Amazon TV will have the possibility of transmitting videos at a lower price than with other networks in the market, since the distribution of files is a cheaper alternative to server storage.
