As we all know the crypto space is currently an unregulated Wild West. This means that there are a lot of scams out there that need to be revealed or uncovered! In this article, I want to highlight some of the most common ways scammers use to steal people’s crypto or in some cases even money.

### Giveaway Scams
Probably the most common scam in the world are Give-Away Scams! These scams are present not just in the crypto space but in the normal world as well. The reason why they are so broadly present is because they are very profitable and because people tend to fall for these kind of scams.

Most of the time they work as follows: A “Nigerian Prince” wants to give you away some money or in our case some free crypto. In order to do this he needs your wallet address but can only make you a transaction if you first send him some crypto. Now, for many of us this sounds like an obvious scam but new people to this space are truly falling for this kind of offer. Furthermore, there is sometimes even a time period that is given put in which the offer counts. This means that there is extra pressure added onto the victim in order to fulfill this scam!

### Rug Pulls
This is also one of the most distributed scams out there, especially in the crypto space. In this act the scammer will take your funds that you allocated towards a certain project and disappear. This will leave you holding the bag of worthless altcoins while the scammer rides off into the sunset with your hard earned and invested money.

This scam is very often happening in the NFT space or the DeFi space. In the first one a mediocre NFT collection is being created by a random artist. This NFT is being sold and praised and once the NFTs got distributed the scammer deletes all of the websites that are linked to this project. They take the money and disappear and the NFTs in this projects are dropping to zero.

The DeFi space is very similar where the victims have to provide some liquidity to a certain LP. The scammer waits until the pool has a certain size and then performs the rug pull. In most of the cases this rug pull is performed very slowly and with funds that are not locked in the LP. It looks like the project has just failed but in reality the scammer was slowly taking out the funds out of the LP. A good example could be Safemoon. In a lot of cases the people are getting caught by amazing APYs but if there is one thing that you should learn in this, it is: When something is too good to be true, it probably is not!

### Pump & Dump
A very similar scam is the Pump & Dump. This scam is very popular with Altcoins that have a very small market Cap as it is easier to move the price of such coins. Usually there is a group that profits from this action and a very big group of losers who are losing a big amount of money. How it works is that the small group accumulates a certain Altcoin. After the accumulation phase they start to either promote it or suggesting a Pump & Dump making it seem like they do not have this coin yet. They try to sell it to people that they are the smart ones while in reality these people are getting scammed. While the people are starting to pump their money into this coin the scammer are just waiting for the perfect moment to exit this investment. When they finally dump their coins, the prices of this assets experience a death spiral which makes a lot of people losing a lot of money!

### Phishing
One of the more harder scams out there is the Phishing Scam. The main aim of the people is to steal your passwords to your exchange accounts or even your private keys! The most recent scams are connected to the latter goal as the scammer target the user’s wallet directly.

One of the most common ways to do so is to make the user hand over their keys voluntarily. This can be done by setting up a fake website in which the user is being asked for their private keys in order to fulfill a transaction or similar things. Keep in mind that nobody would ask you for your private keys! If they do it is most likely a scam. This is also a reason to always check and use the official sides of the project.

### Impersonation
Last but not least we have the fake accounts and celebrity impersonations. In this occasions there are fake accounts going around asking you to either send them your private keys or straight up money or crypto. Be aware that these accounts are most likely not verified and are trying to scam you. Not to hurt anyone’s feelings here, but celebrities would probably not write you private messages or send you E-Mails which is how you should know that these accounts are fake. Furthermore, these celebrities probably do not need your money in the first place so just do not trust anyone unverified on the Internet.

### Conclusion
Like I mentioned in the beginning, it is very important to do your own research, as well as be aware of the malicious activity that is going on. When the space finally gets regulated there will be certainly less scams out there but it will not mean that they will disappear. This is why you should always think first and do not let yourself be pressured into weird situations. And if you are still not sure then think about the following: If it is too good to be true it probably is!
