Escribo esta nota para quien logre encontrarla. Para empezar, contaré algo sobre mí. Vivo en un pueblo bastante tranquilo, de pocas personas y con pocos problemas. Nací aquí, pero a los 10 años me mudé lejos junto a mi madre, cuando se divorció de papá. Pasé prácticamente toda mi niñez viviendo con mamá en casa de la abuela, hasta hace aproximadamente cinco años, cuando murió papá. En su testamento, me dejó la casa en la que vivo actualmente, en la cual nací, en este alejado y pequeño pueblo en las afueras de la ciudad.

Como dije, es un pueblo bastante tranquilo y no sucede nada fuera de lo común. Como sucede en cualquier lugar, a veces pasan cosas malas, pero últimamente ha habido muchos asesinatos, a razón de uno cada semana. Lo curioso de estos asesinatos, según indicó diario del pueblo, es que el asesino deja una fotografía de la victima en la escena del crimen, una fotografía de esa persona durmiendo plácidamente en su habitación. Suena bastante retorcido y me preocupa que estas cosas sucedan aquí, ya que es un pueblo pequeño y muchos nos conocemos. Particularmente, yo conozco a muchos del pueblo, ya que trabajo como cartero y me paseo a diario por las áreas residenciales.

Debido a mi trabajo como cartero, me he dado cuenta de un hecho bastante interesante y es que hay un vecino que llegó al pueblo poco antes de que comenzaran los asesinatos. Otras personas también llegaron al pueblo en el mismo período, pero este vecino en particular ha recibido cartas un día antes de los asesinatos, lo cual me parece realmente sospechoso. No conozco su nombre, ya que en las cartas que suele recibir solo está escrita su dirección; por otra parte, en el buzón de correo solo está escrita la palabra “Stayten”, así que imagino que se llama así, aunque también podría ser su apellido.

El otro día, le dejé una carta en su buzón, la única que entregué en el área ese día. Sorpresa, al día siguiente asesinaron a una simpática ancianita en su propia casa. Me planteé contarle mis sospechas a la policía, pero los oficiales de aquí son unos inútiles que no saben hacer su trabajo. Si supieran hacerlo, yo no tendría que contarles lo que sé, ya que lo habrían descubierto por sí mismos.

Nuevamente llegó el día en que debía entregar otra carta a quien llamo Stayten, solo que esta vez, a riesgo de perder mi trabajo, abrí el sobre y miré el interior. Confieso que sentí una mórbida satisfacción al ver que en el interior del sobre había cuatro fotografías de un oficial del policía durmiendo en su cama con su esposa. La foto estaba oscura, pero se veía claramente el rostro del oficial. Tras ver las fotos, mis sospechas se confirmaron, así que decidí ir con la policía para contárselos, pero entonces pensé en las posibles consecuencias de hacer público mi acto de violación a la privacidad, el cual se podría considerar justificado dadas las circunstancias. Sin embargo, por temor pegué el sobre nuevamente y lo dejé tal como debía entregarse, para que nuestro vecino Stayten no se enterase que yo lo había abierto.

Me arrepentí de haber sido un cobarde, pues debido a esto encontraron los cuerpos sin vida del oficial y su esposa al día siguiente, habían sido asesinados. Durante horas me planté contarle a alguien lo que sabía, pero ahora no tenía pruebas, así que debía esperar a que Stayten recibiese otro sobre, abrirlo y mostrárselo a la policía. Pero entonces pensé que, si lo abría, no tendría manera de vincular al asesino con nuestro vecino, pues solo tendría fotos de una persona durmiendo, fotos de una persona viva, así que debía esperar a que el asesino actuase y entonces mostrarle el contenido del sobre a la policía.

Ese día decidí quedarme con el sobre y no entregárselo a Stayten. La pasé muy mal pensando en que, por no dar la advertencia, alguien sería asesinado. Estuve durante horas sentado frente a una mesa viendo ese sobre, preguntándome quien sería la siguiente víctima de nuestro vecino. Me mataba la curiosidad, así que opté por abrir el sobre tal como lo había hecho antes, tratándo de no dañarlo. Fue preocupante encontrarme nuevamente con esas fotos, las cuales no vi hasta que las tuve todas en mis manos. Entonces, al voltearlas, sentí un miedo que nunca antes había sentido. Las manos me temblaban mientras sostenía las fotos entre mis dedos, observando a quien allí estaba. Por unos segundos seguí mirando y entonces guardé las fotos en el sobre, sin poder controlar el temblor de mis manos.

Acabo de escuchar un ruido afuera de la casa. Resulta desconcertante el miedo que sientes al descubrir que alguien te ha tomado fotos mientras dormías…

I am writing this note for whoever manages to find it. To begin with, I will tell something about myself. I live in a fairly quiet town, with few people and few problems. I was born here, but at the age of 10 I moved away with my mother when she divorced my father. I spent practically all my childhood living with mom at grandma's house, until about five years ago, when dad died. In his will, he left me the house I live in now, the one I was born in, in this remote little town outside the city.

As I said, it's a pretty quiet town and nothing out of the ordinary happens. As happens in any place, sometimes bad things happen, but lately there have been many murders, at the rate of one every week. The curious thing about these murders, according to the town newspaper, is that the murderer leaves a photograph of the victim at the scene of the crime, a photograph of that person sleeping peacefully in their room. It sounds pretty twisted and it worries me that these things happen here, as it is a small town and many of us know each other. Particularly, I know many of the people in town, as I work as a mail carrier and walk through the residential areas on a daily basis.

Due to my work as a letter carrier, I have noticed a rather interesting fact and that is that there is a neighbor who arrived in town shortly before the murders started. Other people also arrived in town in the same period, but this particular neighbor has received letters a day before the murders, which I find really suspicious. I don't know his name, as only his address is written on the letters he usually receives; on the other hand, only the word "Stayten" is written on the mailbox, so I imagine that's his name, although it could also be his last name.

The other day, I left a letter in his mailbox, the only one I delivered in the area that day. Surprise surprise, the next day a nice little old lady was murdered in her own home. I considered telling the police about my suspicions, but the officers here are useless and don't know how to do their job. If they knew how to do it, I wouldn't have to tell them what I know, they would have found out for themselves.

Again the day came when I was to deliver another letter to the one I call Stayten, only this time, at the risk of losing my job, I opened the envelope and looked inside. I confess that I felt a morbid satisfaction when I saw that inside the envelope were four photographs of a police officer sleeping in his bed with his wife. The photo was dark, but the officer's face was clearly visible. After seeing the photos, my suspicions were confirmed, so I decided to go to the police to tell them, but then I thought about the possible consequences of making public my act of privacy violation, which could be considered justified under the circumstances. However, out of fear I taped the envelope back together and left it as it was to be delivered, so that our neighbor Stayten would not find out that I had opened it.

I regretted that I had been a coward, for because of this they found the lifeless bodies of the officer and his wife the next day, they had been murdered. For hours I planned to tell someone what I knew, but now I had no proof, so I had to wait for Stayten to receive another envelope, open it and show it to the police. But then I thought that, if I opened it, I would have no way to link the killer to our neighbor, as I would only have pictures of a sleeping person, pictures of a living person, so I had to wait for the killer to act and then show the contents of the envelope to the police.

That day I decided to keep the envelope and not give it to Stayten. I had a hard time thinking that by not giving the warning, someone would be killed. I sat for hours in front of a table looking at that envelope, wondering who would be our neighbor's next victim. My curiosity was killing me, so I opted to open the envelope as I had done before, trying not to damage it. It was disturbing to find those photos again, which I didn't see until I had them all in my hands. Then, as I turned them over, I felt a fear I had never felt before. My hands trembled as I held the photos between my fingers, looking at who was there. For a few seconds I kept looking and then I put the photos back in the envelope, unable to control the trembling in my hands.

I just heard a noise outside the house. It's disconcerting how scared you feel when you discover that someone has taken pictures of you while you were sleeping...
