I have fond memories of my high school, because our literature teacher did long readings on emblematic novels, with very human characters and powerful plots. From there began my passion for books and a kind of addiction to 20th century prose and novelists. One of my favorite readings was the one I discovered with "The Tin Drum", by the German writer and Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. His complex but symbolic story helped me recognize the pleasant feeling behind good reading. It is a dense, controversial story, with a magic that forces you to laugh at the most grotesque situations. Although many of my colleagues found it boring and tedious, I found it charming and mind-blowing. It is undoubtedly one of the most pleasant literary experiences I have ever had.

De allí comenzó mi pasión por los libros y una especie de adicción a la prosa y los novelistas del siglo XX. Una de mis lecturas favoritas fue la que descubrí con “El Tambor de Hojalata”, del escritor y nobel alemán Günter Grass. Su historia, compleja pero simbólica, me ayudó a reconocer la agradable sensación que se esconde detrás de la buena lectura. Es una historia densa, controversial, con una magia que te obliga a reír ante las situaciones más grotescas. A pesar de que a muchos de mis compañeros les pareció aburrida y tediosa, a mí me resultó encantadora y alucinante. Es sin duda, una de las experiencias literarias más agradables que he vivido.

The premise that weaves the pages of “The Tin Drum” narrates the life of Oscar, a boy who despite his 30 years still looks like 3. With the only peace of mind that the asylum can give him, Óscar recounts his own adventure through the life even long before birth. After a dubious lineage, unforgivable infidelity and a grudge against the rotten minds of adults, our promiscuous protagonist decides to stagnate at his age of three, forever renouncing the clumsy and dark paths of growth and adulthood. Óscar decides to give his love to the only friend who understands it: his tin drum, which, more than a musical instrument, represents for him the only possible reason to preserve his sanity in a Germany that is dying under the battlefields.

Tras un linaje dudoso, una infidelidad imperdonable y  un rencor a las mentes podridas de los adultos, nuestro promiscuo protagonista decide estancarse en su edad de tres años,  renunciando para siempre a los torpes y oscuros senderos del crecimiento y la adultez. Óscar decide entregar su amor al único amigo que lo entiende: su tambor de hojalata, el cual, más que un instrumento musical, significa para él la única razón posible para conservar su cordura en una Alemania que agoniza bajo los campos de batalla.

The first pages of the book are a powerful visual resource to attract the reader. We get into Oscar's life as if we were his personal psychiatrists. We looked at the trigger behind 3 books and a hundred pages, and we found some simple potatoes and a soldier who had decided to flee death by hiding under skirts. From there, with the protagonist's voice bombarding us with metaphors, we discover Oscar's world as if it were a joke. That's what makes the reading flow, despite the detailed description of the scenes. A simple drum wobbles our common sense, familiarizing us with Oscar's clear need to give up his long bones and his man's chin. It sounds strange, but it convinces, especially when the war scene is the background.
>Las primeras páginas del libro son un potente recurso visual para atraer al lector. Nos metemos en la vida de Óscar como si fuéramos sus psiquiatras personales. Miramos el detonante detrás de 3 libros y un centenar de páginas, y nos encontramos con unas simples patatas y un soldado que había decidido huir de la muerte escondiéndose debajo de unas faldas. A partir de ahí, con la voz del protagonista bombardeándonos de metáforas, vamos descubriendo el mundo de Óscar como si se tratara de un chiste. Eso es lo que hace que la lectura fluya, muy a pesar de la detallada descripción de las escenas.  Un simple tambor nos bambolea el sentido común, familiarizándonos con la clara necesidad de Óscar por renunciar a sus huesos largos y su barbilla de hombre. Suena extraño, pero convence, y más cuando el escenario bélico es el trasfondo.

We are little children on the inside, and we will always yearn to go back to the toy and carefree stage. The problem with Oscar is that it is not his childhood that he fears losing, it is reasonable judgment that he wants to keep forever. The novel explores incest and extramarital affairs, as well as the picturesque setting of the fight against adversity. Letter after letter, with protagonist and omniscient narrators interspersed with each other, we sigh the bitter experiences of a little boy who all the time thought like an adult, but who refuses to live like one.
>Somos pequeños niños en el interior, y siempre anhelaremos regresar a la etapa de los juguetes y las despreocupaciones.  El problema con Óscar es que no es su infancia la que teme perder, es el juicio razonable el que quiere conservar para siempre. La novela indaga en el incesto y las relaciones extramaritales, y también en el pintoresco escenario de la lucha contra la adversidad. Letra tras letra, con narradores protagonistas y omniscientes intercalados entre sí, suspiramos las amargas vivencias de un chiquillo que todo el tiempo pensó como un adulto, pero que se niega a vivir como uno.

Magical realism says “present” in Günter Grass's The Tin Drum, in addition to an ironic and sarcastic style. Musical art is the most pronounced theme of this literary work, especially the power it transmits against war and systematic abuse. The novel is a mockery of the narcissistic, idolatrous and violent state of some thoughts, ridiculed as the same circuses in which the protagonist of this whole mess ventures. Reading may be tedious at times, but it's worth continuing to turn the pages.
>El realismo mágico dice “presente” en El Tambor de Hojalata de Günter Grass, además de un estilo irónico y sarcástico. El arte musical es el tema más pronunciado de esta obra literaria, sobre todo el poder que transmite contra la guerra y el abuso sistemático. La novela es una burla al estado narcisista, idolatra y violento de algunos pensamientos, ridiculizados como los mismos circos en los que se aventura el protagonista de todo este embrollo. Quizás la lectura sea tediosa en algunos momentos, pero vale la pena seguir pasando las páginas. 

If you are a lover of irony and sarcasm carved into an immoral and otherwise erroneous reference, I recommend you read "The Tin Drum" by Günter Grass. This novel will teach you the notion of an adult who refuses to grow up under the sonatas of his old drum. Insanity is the best way out of a delusional society, and together with Óscar you will know that the really crazy really live outside the asylum.

Esta novela te enseñará la noción de un adulto que se niega a crecer bajo las sonatas de su viejo tambor. La locura es la mejor salida a una sociedad delirante, y junto a Óscar sabrás que los locos de verdad realmente viven fuera del manicomio

Günter Grass was a notable German writer in whose literary works he highlighted the fierce mix between the mind and corruption that lures it to the precipice. He was the winner of the Novel Prize for Literature in 1999, being a fundamental reference in the novelistic phenomenon. His stories address a clear disposition to the ironic side of thoughts and beliefs. Among them, “the Tin Drum” stands out, a three-part book with which Grass caused a stir due to his crude narrative, being the victim of censorship on many occasions. This work was adapted to the cinema under the same name, winning the Academy Award for best foreign film. Today, the stories of this author remain a benchmark for universal literature.
