Let's travel together #230 - Monumentul si Cimitirul Eroilor de la Siriu (World War I heroes' cemetery near Gura Siriului)

Just when we thought that the day is over and we have already seen a lot at that time, while we were approaching the place where we were spending a few nights in Buzau County, we noticed one more location that it felt like waiting for our visit.
From the distance, we thought it was a common cemetery with the specific Romanian flag on the main entrance but our curiosity made us want to stop the car and at least read the lyrics written on the arch.
Even though everything is written in Romanian, I'll try to translate and share it down below because it was very emotional when we noticed what was actually everything about:
> Don't forget the ones who fell in the war,
Leave them a free place at the table from time to time.
As if they are still alive and amongst us,
As if they would be able to return home.

All these verses, along with the big title "The heroes monument" and the years that were only proving that it was real what we thought about, made us figure out that we are not staying in front of a common cemetery but in front of a monument dedicated to these who fought in the World War I to protect their country, but especially the lands from Buzau county.

I'd lie if I would say that it was the first time when we were saying a cemetery like that because there is another one in the city where we are living *(Sibiu)* but which we still haven't managed to visit yet, but also one at [Turnu Rosu](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@gabrielatravels/let-s-travel-together-170-cimitirul-de-onoare-turnu-rosu-war-cemetery) that we visited one year ago.

However, I'm pretty sure this kind of monument is most likely in every county or region of the country but I still feel a different emotion every time I get to make my first steps into one and walk between heroes who are resting now because they finished their mission to protect Romania. We all should be grateful to these people, but unfortunately, very few understand those times and remember them, while being "brave" got a completely new meaning in 2022. Isn't that sad?

What though we were visiting this place during a pretty busy period with tourists and in the middle of the day, we had a strange feeling when we noticed that even if the door was open there was literally no one in the cemetery. Yet another proof that people tend to forget that we live good times these days because of those who sacrificed their lives to protect the country.

Anyway, we didn't let that aspect discourage our will to visit the monument and entered through the tiny door which was followed by a long way of stairs meant to take us to the top of the hill from where we got a new and beautiful perspective over the [Siriu Lake](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@gabrielatravels/lets-travel-together-226-lacul-siriu-siriu-lake).
We found ourselves suddenly forgetting about the smile we always have on our faces during a trip, and only walked between the crosses of different sizes and with different inscriptions on them, adding another strange amotion to our heart when we noticed soldiers who were only like 20 years old when they died...
Even though there were many twists along the war with various losses on both sides, the lieutenant who was leading the army of Romania, managed to create a great opposition which made everyone go further in the war while there were only a few left on the front line.
Not long after the things chilled down for a bit, the lieutenant was surprised by many locals of the villages from the Buzau county who were showing gratitude and happiness for everything he did for this part of Romania.

That's how, along with the crosses of the soldiers, there can be noticed a bigger statue of a soldier during an attack with a rifle in one hand and a grenade in the other hand, showing the courage they had to fight for their lands and families.

The statue is made entirely from bronze and it weighs around 3 tons and it's the masterpiece of a famous sculptor whose name is Frederick Stork who made the statue in the armament factories from Cugir.

While most likely everyone would expect to see the bones of the soldiers rest under the plates with their names, it was a big surprise for us to figure out that there is actually a special room where all these are gathered together. 

It was both a unique thing because we've never seen this before, but also a strange situation thinking that maybe a single person has its bones mixed with these of the others. Though, this might have an explanation since the whole cemetery had to be moved a little bit higher on the hill from its original placement due to the [Siriu Dam](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@gabrielatravels/lets-travel-together-226-lacul-siriu-siriu-lake) which had to be built up.

Another thing we noticed was that some of the crosses still have flowers and candles lighting up which means that they won't be forgotten too soon, as well as freshly planted fir seedlings almost next to each cross which most likely will create a less sober landscape when these will grow up.

The **World War I heroes' cemetery** is located near Gura Siriului on the national road **DN10** which surrounds the lake. The coordinates of the cemetery are: 45Β°14'11"N   25Β°56'35"E.

230 trips have you shared here? Extraordinary, to take these trips and then to write about them. I think there's a lot more you haven't written about yet, and I'm impressed by your family's passion for travel, especially in our country. I have travelled much less and have become acquainted with many places from your posts. I was a little surprised to read now about a cemetery and a monument to heroes. Indeed, the most impressive are those from WWI, when the Romanian army was made up overwhelmingly of peasants. People with little military training, many illiterate but who fought with great courage and heroism for the defense of the country. Almost every family had, in the past, someone who participated in the war. I haven't been to Siriu either and I don't know if I'll ever get there, and I'm glad I read here about this place.
The sculptor Frederick Stork was a great artist along with his wife. There is a museum in Bucharest about them, I think in their former home. In Balchik (I don't know if you have travelled there, if not then I think you must, especially as I saw from this post your penchant for patriotism) near Queen Mary's Palace there is, unfortunately in disrepair, an exceptional villa that belonged to the Stork family.

I was last week for a few days and for the first time I stayed more than a day. I liked it very much. I wrote about it and if somehow you will read it, please forgive some mistakes related to the history of the city or the geography of the place.

Yes, 230 travel articles written so far and many more coming up! I'm actually writing these blogs from the folder with my travels in 2021, lol. Oh and there are just 14 posts out of the 230 mentioned which are not from Romania. But the big slice is for Romania and it will remain like this from now on as I doubt I'll get the chance again to visit a different country anytime soon.

I'm happy to hear that my posts helped you as this is my intention here and that's also why I focus on writing so much about less known parts of Romania. I am quite patriotic and I do love my country, but equally I feel affected for the way things are going on and that there are quite a lot of people who are trying to ruin everything..

I've never been to that museum in Bucharest, nor in Balchik, but I'll definitely add these on my list and ping you out when I see them!

Well, you are a great traveler in Romania and I see that you are very appreciated here, so people are also interested in our country. I, who don't move around the country much, write as much as I can about Bucharest and all the cities where I lived and traveled. Sometimes I try to introduce Romanian music or poetry, with the same purpose as to let others know what they don't know about the place where we live.

I like the way people arrange things there, it doesn't look like a cemetery but more like a park. It's good to know that heroes have such a good resting place.

Absolutely! Some benches would be a good idea as it's a pretty chill place where some could spend a while. I've seen cemeteries turned into relaxing parks before so I think it would work over here too.

The place looks clean!😁 But only with reading your post, it got me a strange feeling of both grief and sadness about this. We surely must put value and at least keep these places clean in the memory of the people that once were and they were brave!

I never imagined myself saying *what a beautiful place this cemetery is*, but the reality is that it is a space that looks very well cared for and delicate. It also transmits real peace and is not scary like many others, of course it has a lot to do with the fact that it is a monument and has so much history and importance within its enclosure.

It is very true what you say, and I can imagine the chills when walking through the place imagining all that those souls had to have gone through, we can only recognize it and try to maintain their legacy over time.

I have reflected a lot thanks to your post, today we have not learned much and we make small things into big problems that could end up with thousands of people in that same situation.

Hopefully something happens and we become better citizens and not the opposite.

I know right? Being a historical monument is not an excuse as I've seen similar places looking a lot creepier and less maintained than the common cemeteries look, but I'm really happy this one exists and perhaps will be an example for more people and locations alike.
