Along with the yearly road trip I usually take with my family, there are always these kinds of spontaneous trips which usually begin and end on the same day.
However, even if we get to enjoy just a couple of hours exploring a new place or seeing again a location that we first visited a while ago, it's enough to recharge our batteries with the energy we need for a healthier and happier life.
I always say that there is no better remedy to all your problems other than travelling which gives you the freedom and happiness you never knew they were missing.
So while along with my family we discovered pretty much all the cities this country has to offer, there was Medias, a medieval town, that we kept saying that we should visit one day even though we heard that it's a quite forgotten city with not much to offer while many inhabitants have already moved to other cities to build a better future.
Since the city is located in the same county where I, my sister and my boyfriend are living for a few years now, we didn't have to spend a lot of time on the road because Medias is just 60 km away from Sibiu.

So as soon as we found a parking lot close to the center of the city, we decided to enjoy a walk and look out for places that we could visit, but the first thing that caught my attention was the little park which was very colourful and seemed like the best place where to hide from the sun rays during a hot day of the summer.

The park also seemed like quite a chill place where to spend a while but from my previous experience, the parks also represent the right location where you can meet all kinds of people but also the homeless ones which you can never be too sure about.

Since I was born in quite a small town from a different region of Romania than the one where I'm currently living in, I got to see a lot of homeless people sleeping either on the benches of a park, in the train station or even on the street and some buildings that were abandoned while being under construction.

However, in all these cases we are talking about areas of the city which didn't represent the center of the town or places of interest for the tourists so it was a little bit weird to meet these in the middle of a sunny day and in the center of Medias, but it says a lot about how hard the living is in some parts of Romania.

Anyway, as every town has both its good and bad parts, we decided to leave those thoughts behind and walk a little bit more on the streets of Medias, looking out for more places where we could spend time while discovering new things but also building fresh memories to feed our souls with whenever we miss travelling again.
So after going up and down on the streets of Medias, we ended up in the same area of the city from where we noticed a majestic tower watching over the rest of the buildings which seemed like being part of an evangelical church that are so popular in Transylvania.
Hence why we decided to set that as our next thing to explore and walk towards its direction while letting ourselves be surrounded by more and more old buildings but also walls that seemed like being here since forever.
There is no need to set up a GPS to take you to the church because right from the park shown previously you can get pretty easy to this one if you follow its direction because there are quite a few narrow streets which end up in the same location.

However, the one we ended up following, took us around a defensive wall which will connect with the citadel at one point, that most likely had a completely different purpose a while ago and not just to separate the streets from the buildings and houses of the people.

The first spot that caught my attention again was a cafe which seemed like a 2in1 business because you could also purchase souvenirs and other things from there, not only a hot coffee.

Anyway, as we weren't here for a coffee, nor for souvenirs even though it would be nice to have a physical memory from Medias, we decided to walk further and focus on the church we wanted to reach.

Being surrounded by history and buildings which could easily make you feel like being teleported into a different world that ended centuries ago is definitely a cool thing, but when you get to walk through towers and tunnels to reach your destination, everything seems more authentic and exciting.

Walking through tunnels and towers didn't represent a new thing for us since you can enjoy quite a few experiences like this one in more parts of the country, but going up and down on stairs remembered me about [The Covered Sairway](https://peakd.com/hive-163772/@gabrielatravels/lets-travel-together-209-scara-acoperita-the-covered-stairway) from Sighisoara which is also the single place in Romania I've seen like this before.

The name which is identical in both of the cases is not the single thing alike but also its attribution because both of the stairways were built with the thought of protecting children on their way to school that was located at the end of the tunnel. However, while the one from Sighisoara is with over 100 years older than the one from Medias, the last one also represented the way to access the prison of the fortress.

Not long after you go up on the covered stairway which we had the luck to find open, you will end up next to the church that seems a lot bigger than expected but which is surrounded by a few more towers and buildings that are worth being taken a picture of or simply spending a couple of minutes exploring them.

From what I've read on the internet there are moments when the main gate that makes the access to the covered stairway is locked but this is just one of the three ways of accessing the church which can be reached from other sides of Medias as well, so that shouldn't represent an impediment of visiting it or at least making your way to that direction.

Being such a large church it would be impossible to only have a single way of accessing it but there is just one door which is left open for the tourists which also represents the place from where you can purchase visiting tickets before discovering what this one has to offer.

Anyway, as I said, there are quite a few evangelical churches in Transylvania so it wasn't our first time sitting in front of such a building, especially since we have one very similar in Sibiu. So we decided to only take a few pictures from the outside and admire how it looks on the inside by checking out the panel located next to the door which presents some indoor images but also details like the schedule for visiting.

The church took quite a few years to be built, starting in 1437 and ending in 1488 and it represents one of the most important churches of Transylvania following a gothic style which is not very common in Romania. 

Along with being part of history, the church did confront quite a few challenges during the time especially since it could oversee the whole city and sound the alarm in case of invasion so it would be hard not to face a few situations even if they were linked with invasions or not.

Though, at the end of the day, I'm sure that not many remind all these details but actually get happy to see a place that managed to resist during the passage of time, so I do consider that the actual treasure of Romania rests not only in the mountains but also in buildings like this one which can share history in different ways than via books. 

The address of **St. Margaret's Church** is *Str. Piaţa Castelului 2* and it's open most of the time except on Sundays when for a couple of hours the access is allowed only for locals who want to pray and listen to church songs.

In order to reach **Medias** you can either take the train from most of the main cities of Romania, or follow the national road **DN14** on the route *Sura Mare - Slimnic - Seica Mare - Copsa Mica - Medias*.

Thank you for showing a very beautiful architecture. I also like the outside beautiful and clean garden. Everything is maintained and preserved very well.

The stonework in the tunnels and sidewalks are breathtaking, and the structures are a stunning display of the architectures ability to stand the test of time. 

I vicariously felt *"like being teleported into a different world that ended centuries ago"* looking at those tunnels as you described.
