A few days ago, I was looking for something in a trunk at my home, and I found a picture of me when I was a child. 

You won't believe that I forgot about what I was searching for and stood there looking at that picture for about 30 mins or more, I think.

Well that was a regain of memories for me but wasn't a good thing as it also reminded me of some bad incidents of my childhood which I wanted to forget. 

time and its antics, on certain occasions when I sit down to contemplate the photo album, it is surprising to see how time flies, the nostalgic thing about all this is that we remember that feeling of joy of those times, which apparently are left behind and then nothing is the same again because the present meetings are not all there and that generates a deep sadness

What a nice gift that watch for your niece, you will be closer to each other and on the other hand her parents will be more at ease in today's world.

I can imagine the happiness when you took her call, so many nerves but at the same time joy.

Beautiful the photo, in my case I brought few, very few, others my family scanned them to be able to see them. And I do look at them from time to time, just today I was remembering my paternal grandfather and the countryside. I loved him very much. 
I have very few photos of him... very few, but he is in my memory, and they say I look a lot like him.

Those memories and past life came back to me a lot today, it seems you would have known... thank you!

No, it is not a loss, it is a going back and reliving good times, those are worth it.

You seem like the type of person who knows a lot about how the right distance or space can create the right relationship. As someone trying to navigate the space between my own ideal relationship between myself and my three kids and what happens when their wants/needs/moods come into the mix, I’d say that the phone call is worth 10,000 times more than being there on the special day to either take or be in the picture. 

I really hope my kids put more effort into their English skills so that they can call my younger brothers some day and take advantage of that uncle relationship.

Old old photos? Probably not. It has been a while since I pulled out any of my old albums. They will be something that my nieces and nephews can go through when I am long gone! We do have most of our photos from the last decade saved to the cloud and those come across in reminders on our phone and TV. Those often have a way of taking us back.

Yeah, 😅, that nostalgic feeling is very very real in the memories of everyone of us, myself growing up in the village living with my matanal grandmother, as a teenager then many memorable things happened,

 but as an adult now I still remember most of the occasional pictures and many other activities, and during festive times we usually  partake together,

That's exactly how human mind and brain are made to function,

This picture you present here and the awesome birthday of your niece are very emotional, moreover when you are all alone in another country, remembering all the beautiful relationships and togetherness that has been in between you and your loved ones many years ago.

In the same way that watch gift you have given to your niece on her birthday and the phone call are all creating her own nostalgic memory when she grows up.

All these are the beauty of life and living.

I haven't seen one of the kids-phone watches yet.  It sounds so ....BOND ! Such a sweet thing that she called you first. :)

A few years before my brother David passed, he scanned all the photos from my Mother's photo albums and my two Grandmother's, put them on a disc, made copies and shared them with us siblings and Mom.  After he passed, my nephew put all the photos he could find, including those same photos my brother scanned  and then some more....and put them on an external hard drives of which he gave each of us a copy the Christmas after.  That means I have most of the photos our family has (with the exception of some more my Mother has found since, that for some reason never made it to an album)... right at our finger tips and I knew exactly what you mean about getting caught up in them.  I may be looking for something specific, not being sure which file it is in and once I get in them, I could be lost in there for hours!  SO many fun memories and occasions and family get-togethers.  Old black and whites, before color photos were a common thing. Then also, lots of photos of my brother and his family and things they did along the way.... it is all so priceless.

I know it is my history, but by now, it all seems like a whole other world kind of. It's wonderful to have them all at my fingertips. 

Happy birthday to your niece and being apart in a special occasion like birthday will really make you miss them so much. Glad technology is here and we can still see them and talk to them like they are around us. 

You're a sweet uncle and they are so lucky to have you. My son loves Lego toys too.

About looking at pictures, yes I do and looking into it will bring back all memories. You won't noticed you spend a long time just watching pictures one to another. 

This is so sweet, I have a niece and I can't imagine living so far from her, she's amazing.  You're already a big part of her life because her first call was to you, happy birthday to your niece 🎂🥳 🎉

Looking at this picture is always a treasure of memories. The unexplained happiness of seeing my lovely daughter after the delivery. I have thousands of pictures and videos on my phone about my daughter. 

I get all of what you're writing about here. The separation from family - I lived apart from them for more than half of my life and witnessed only the first few years of my nieces and nephews growing up. 

And the photos - yeah, I feel like the older I get the more I look back. I have been using Lightroom for my extensive catalog for years, ever since I went digital and it is easy to scroll back. I digitized a few of my earlier photos but not all. Yet. Retirement, right? But by then most photos will have yellowed and faded, yet I'm sure they will still spur the memories that were made the day the photos were taken. 

Smallsteps is really such a cutie pie, every now I see her in your brother's posts. The emergency watch is probably not a bad idea.

Reconnecting with memories through old photographs is great. A couple of days ago I went to the house where I grew up with my 7 siblings, currently only one of them lives there. It's a house that holds a lot of memories. I went to look for some books and inside one of them there was a picture of my younger sister and I when we were kids, we were inseparable, I was transported to a special place and I felt something stirred inside me.

She currently lives in another country, when she found out about her pregnancy she was determined not to stay in Venezuela. My nephew is now 5 years old, I hope one day to be able to see him in person, hopefully when he is still a boy.

The picture taken is so precious, I can see how she looks up to her big brother (it's so adorable).
Like I’ve said before, you are a great uncle and your niece and nephew think same too.
How else will you explain being the first she legit calls? And your excitement subtly expressed in writing must be off the charts. Congratulation!!!🎉🎊 To me that is a great win.

I know the nostalgia that comes with looking at pictures from the past and I have been there before, to be precise last two weeks. It had me smiling at pictures and spending hours reminiscing without realising it. I had to get a grip on myself before I spend the whole day doing just that. It is an awesome feeling with no regrets cus how else will we be deeply intouch with our past and of course, be proud of our present?
