Well .... I have my own opinion on this, I believe that men and women deserve equal opportunities, as well as equal pay and other things. 

But in essence we are not so equal, there are many things that differentiate us. So this is a complicated issue.

It is true that we deserve equal rights and equal treatment, but in certain circumstances we are different, for example, although it is not in all cases, there is not the same physical strength. 

Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.

Today, differences continue to be made where there are none, and where there could be differences.... then the other way round. Men and women have a different structure and what is real is that we complement each other, that is what is really important.

To be fair they do have a lingerie football league. 😃Not that I would want to see the guy players in similar uniforms. Title IX is a big deal where I work and it makes you think really intensely about the things you plan to do and hope to achieve.

Personally, I'd like to get rid of the concept/framework of gender.  We all have genitalia, what form it takes and what we do with it in private is nobody's business but our own.  People have attributed so much nonsense to gender over the centuries that I can't help but suspect it was invented as a means to divide and control us.

Here there's been considerable uproar over trans people competing in sports as their preferred gender, can't help but think it's a good argument for ending the segregation of sports.

The segregation in sport and the things you mentioned like best of 3 vs best of 5, who do you think is responsible for that?  To me it reeks of the paternalistic attitudes that were the norm 50-100 years ago and I can't help but think that it is ultimately some guy's bright idea.  The women I've played sports with have never had any issue with doing exactly the same as the guys.

You bringing up tennis gave me a chuckle, I played tennis for many years and for reasons that were never made clear to me, we called mixed doubles "Australian doubles".

Women not only are suppose to get priority seating here on trains, but they actually have their own "women-only" cars. 

It is understandable, considering that rates of women being molested on the crowded trains is super high. It's not equal, but I don't know how many men would agree to be daily molested to bring up the equality. ;) 

Hi Galen, I think that in sport, taking into account the physical differences between men and women, having men and women compete together can only have one result: to make women invisible, and, I'm afraid, to give "arguments" about the "superiority" or "inferiority" of one sex over the other. Perhaps in another world and with another humanity this would be different, but in this world and with this humanity I think this would be the result. A hug

My default is always, 'Let the property owner decide'. So the Olympic committee should set the rules/terms, and those who want to participate on those terms, can do so. 
If they do a bad job, alternate competitions/codes will spring up to pick up those competitors/viewers/advertisers.

Pregnant women do. And before anyone roasts me, I'm kidding. I know the reason for the special seats and I fully support it.

I don't know if you were being serious, but the answer to the sports separation is simple. Testosterone and muscle mass. I am not an expert in this, but this is the basic info I've gathered from school and through reading about these things. During adolescence and while growing up, boys have more testosterone in their body. This does a lot of things to their development, but one of them is in the physical development of the body. As men grow older they have more muscle mass in their body, and women tend to have more fat [this is by design since they need the fat for child birth and protection of the child].

So in sports, unfortunately, men tend to perform better in those that require more strength. The muscle mass difference makes them hit harder in tennis, jump higher in basketball, run faster, swim faster, etc. I am not trying to insult women. I think if you ask any athlete, they will tell you something similar or along these lines. There have been cases where women competed against men and it wasn't close. The Williams sisters [Serena and Venus] played against Karsten Braasch [then ranked 203 in mens tennis], and they both lost. The US Women's national soccer team lost to a U-15 boys team. You can also look at the times for the world records and men are usually faster. The separation is actually for the benefit of women.

In the military, while I do agree that they are both equally good at killing with guns, there are some issues in the older times. When ground troops were very important in battle, men tend to be sent out more because they can carry heavier things. Weapons, tools, supplies. When recovering bodies, men can carry more and faster, while women can encounter difficulty. If you've seen Black Hawk Down or similar movies. Some were carrying their comrades on their shoulders while shooting and running, it will be difficult for a 5'7 woman to carry a 6'6 man while shooting and running.

I think with sports the theory is that guys are usually stronger than girls (I guess not everyone realises that anyone weaker than their opponent can get very devious) so the segregation is "only fair" (I guess with the assumption that a mere woman would never be able to compete with the best of the best men).

And of course people would have to actually see women as strong and capable rather than saying they do but still quietly regarding them as "the fair sex" that are superfragile and in need of protection.

And after all that on your actual topic I don't even follow sports (not even the one I coach), in theory I don't think I would mind in the slightest if they stopped segregating there but while I know some of the kids wouldn't mind (I know some boys that would love to do beam for whatever reason, poor dears haven't yet had the misfortune of splitting the beam I guess, and some girls would love to do rings and pbars), it would make my job about a million times harder (I find boys' gymnastics easy and girls' gymnastics terrifying).

In short, class division is tightly linked with gender discrimination and it is rooted back in history.
