I am tempted to laugh. The story is kinda hilarious. But then I realize that you had to go through a lot of pain and then I throw away the urge to laugh.

Pain, especially the type from dental procedures can be so debilitating one would have to take a break from work.

I am surprised you already back to work the next day...

If that's not the definition of strength, I don't know what is.

Oh, man, I am just planning my next dental appointment and it will be another extraction. Root canal is always offered here as an option, but not all dentist do that and very few do it well.
Needless to say it is outrageously expensive (although I'm sure you'll find it a bargain, around $200 a piece if it does not require more than two sessions).
Hope you have a painless day and your next session is satisfactory.
Teeth should work like fingernails, but that too much to ask, I guess.

Haha... I enjoyed this blog as I was imagining your situation while reading throughout what you have written here. I am someone who rarely goes to a dentist. I guess the last time was when I was a kid, not even when I became a teenager. And now, I'm done with schooling and I haven't been in a dentist for years now.

I admit that there were times that I needed to visit one, but I just decided to endure the pain and have it treated at home. I was thinking the same thing as I read your first lines after the quote..... I must be pretty common. 

Ond of the things I hate the most is the dentist.  And I don't even know why since I have never had a bad or really painful experience but since a very young age I was always terrified of it.

I loved reading your post.  You make it funny and fun to read even though your day was pretty tough.

One of my least favourite places to visit - the dentist.   Coffee - no probs - always available for a good cup of coffee.

I think the worst part is actually keeping your mouth open for the entire time. 
I have an overactive gland under my tongue that sprays water constantly, <sup>(my superpower which has come in handy on many occasions)</sup>, so my dentist always says "I am gonna stuff your mouth." ...not the most elegant sounding thing, but that's the only way to outdo my "superpower" 

It is an odd feeling that makes you self-conscious after leaving the dentist... you feel like everyone can see your swollen face from a distance and the words all come out wrong.

I am sure that the coffee comforted you nicely, and in that case, I would be just a common person by Confucius judgement.

Oh, yes, get a crown! It will be an added expense, but it will protect the root canal. If there is no crown, it shortens the lifespan of the root canal, and you might have to repeat the process or lose the tooth completely. Just make sure that the dentist is kind enough to select the grade of white to match the natural colour of your teeth. I didn't know that was available until I got to the Philippines. The dentist laughed at the fluorescent white crown my previous dentist gave me. 

I really liked you post @galen. I find it way nice the way you keep ud reading into something as "ordinary" as a visit to the dentist -I hate going to the dentist, no matter how nice my dentist is- and I'm with you, deeply enjoying a cup of coffee, when needed, is absolute comfort. A few years ago I had an upper wisdom tooth crack and need to be extracted and the oral surgeon I used popped a needle right up through the roof of my mouth without so much of a smile!  It was excruciating and the worst part of the whole procedure lololol I definitely left nail marks in the arms of his chair.

In contrast to that brutality, my current dentist is a freaking Mozart of dentistry.  He did a crown for me a couple of years ago and I literally felt NOTHING.  I also love the guy because he gives me gas (not the bean kind though)

A funny little note about me a gas.  You and I have commented extensively about self evaluation and self awareness and over the years I come to know I'm a lot of a know-it-all and control it fairly well......until the gas kicks in.  I remember once I was under the influence of gas during the prep visit for my upcoming crown and I made the dentist stop mid-procedure so I could explain (to a very educated dentist) the entire grand history of dentistry and how they actually found rudimentary dental tool inside some of the pyramids....lolololol  Apparently my arrogance knows no bounds when "on the gas".  

I'm glad the coffee was enjoyable and often a good cup of coffee can be the difference between joy and sorrow.

She doesn't ask you questions that you can answer with signs? That's what mine does XD Did you get a bite block? Jaw still tends to hurt afterwards but at least you don't have to spend so much energy holding your mouth open forever XD

For future reference don't eat or drink hot things while the anaesthetic is still in effect because burns/bites while you couldn't feel your face aren't fun to deal with afterwards.

Glad you survived and seemed to have pulled up okay after the ordeal.  Hope the next appointment doesn't require quite so many painkillers afterwards D:
