Honestly, I have never had such communications personally, but I know that they are very important in the trips you are talking about and in other circumstances such as living away from the city. But what caught my attention is the issue of fines for using the wrong channel and you are right, it can interfere with saving a life.

We had CB Radios in all of our cars when I was a kid.  We also had a base station at home with a custom 30 foot tower and huge antenna.  We lived about 15 minutes from town, so it was a good way to communicate if my sister or I had an emergency when our parents were in town.  My dad also used it to communicate with a group he was in called operation overseers.  His handle was Moonshadow (from the Cat Stevens song)and I think he mainly used channels 14 and 9 if I remember right.  I can't remember my moms handle, but I think my sister was firestar and I can't remember what I was.  Those were some good times.

this is something new which I am seeing at today's time because the generation have came far a lot. But over here there no such type of charges on radio communication and if we go on a long drive in india. Radio plays some good type of BOLLOYWOOD music, and give some important information across the city/area/country. That's all....

Ha, a post that used to be right up my alley. Radio communications, or operational communications in general is what I did in the military as my primary speciality. I started out humping HF, VHF, UHF radios as an RTO (HF was my favorite) and eventually promoted through the ranks to planning the install and logistics of the big box GMF and TErrestrial stuff. Now the only radio I operate is a CB occasionally in my pickup truck. We are not as restricted over here on the channels as you are. We do have an emergency channle, but for the most part, it seems to be a free for all. They are mostly used by trucjers and farmers these days.

The last time I used something like this I was 6 years old and was a walkie talkie 😅 I never used this as where I go is just covered by phone cells, but I understand the importance of it in the wild, you might get lost and screwed

That fines are really huge! 

We live on 14 acres of scrubland so we need walkie-talkies to find one another. They're only cheap little fellas but they do the job.

Wow, I didn’t know you were into radios as well! I did my HF Ham radio course at a very young age with my dad as preparation for our sailing journey (Starlink wasn’t popular back then), and since our boat had an HF radio, we thought—why not?

I absolutely love talking on the HF radio, especially during offshore passages. For instance, on the trip from New Zealand to Fiji, which took seven days, we were in contact with 12 boats. Everyone was grabbing each other’s coordinates and having small chats every evening. I even set up a net where I was talking from Western Australia to people in both Australia and New Zealand. It was really fun.

Later on, we installed a Pactor modem so we could send emails to family. I remember i used to crawl into the corner of the boat to clean the ground plate from corrosion to ensure we got a stronger signal.

I'm so glad my current boat has an HF radio—I can't wait to start using it! I've got a ham call sign that I get to keep for life, and honestly, it's the best one out there. Being on a steel boat, I shouldn't run into any grounding issues either, which is a huge plus. 😁

Thank you for sharing—I totally agree with everything you mentioned. On my boat, the only backup I would truly rely on is the HF radio.

I should get a CB radio for the Friend-Shaped Car. It wouldn't be hard to laminate an index card cheat sheet for channels and etiquette.

The annoying and static ridden CB radio that I have used 10's of thousands of times out here on the road is dying a slow death like so many other useful things wrongly demonized in this Clown World.

It seems the NOOBS are told they are not aloud to have them in the truck and it is a termination offense as they are not a "hands free' device. But I see many. Upwards of half of the new "Meat in the Seat" out here hand job fondling and giving oral pleasure to their cellular devices. They are cell phone zombie addicts.

My old two way citizens band radio. A 40 channel Cobra Classic in chrome edition still works well and is on if my Prime Mover is in motion. 

That CB has saved many lives including mine probably more than once thru early warnings of whats up around the bend. Stopped traffic, road debri, and the PoPo speed trappin'. Not that I speed these days. But a 35 mph zone can still catch a slow poke like me off guard.

My main experience is a year as a signal corps specialist, tail end of the Cold War.

That was very helpful when I drive trams for ~3 years at the end of the nineties, never had a problem getting my messages across, you get rid of any mumbling or other bad habits that kills clarity during those brutal exercises!

Other than that its been tiny events like informing the tower during my few hours of flying, listening to virtually nothing on 16 while boating, a PAN PAN in a busy harbour in Croatia that got **no answer** at all haha...

Heard a story from the outback years ago, I believe it happened, you'd know 1000x more about that of course:

This guy working as a mechanic did one of those long hauls. So, he comes across an ambulance parked, crew outside.

When he parks he see that the whole engine has been split apart, across a tarp in front of the ambulance.

The crew are drunk as skunks, when he asks them about their predicament they tell him its noooo problem at all, they'd radioed for parts, which will arrive in a few days. Enough water and food, as well as liquor, no problem!

So he asks them *when* they radioed it in. They're not sure, they've been drinking!

He asks again if they need help, they are super clear that there is no problem, so he's got no other option than leaving.

About to leave he then asks: "So, did you have a patient or not?"

Their answer was as simple and as straight on as everything else: "Yes, but he died, so we buried him over there"

Now I long to get *away* from cities again, should get myself another boat I guess... 😁

I received my Ham Radio license VE3YRG Dec 2019 and choose to operate low power digital radio. I live in Eastern Canada and just made my longest contact last Sunday night. I made contact with Southern Australia with less than 5 watts. Some days I think I would make more contacts with more power, but really enjoy working with less than 5 watts. There are a lot of operators that run 100 watts or up to 1500 Watts. Need special class of license to run 1500 Watts. A lot of members of my local radio club practice Emergency communications drills.
