Back a while, I was responsible for a group of fellows, hard chaps and hard chargers all of them, but good men who worked hard when required, which was often. We were trained, and constantly worked to hone skills further understanding that *sharp skills not used become dull*. We did difficult things, uncomfortable things, and were called upon at times to move situations forward effectively, efficiently and within set timeframes.

Each member had a role to play and the collective unit couldn't operate without those elements combining; each man knew his role and [usually] someone else's besides, and each performed it with a level of confidence that comes through endless training, honest-evaluation and a lot of dogged persistence. No one wanted to let the team down so they worked, stayed on the path no matter the difficulties and we achieved the required results.

Sometimes new team members would come along and, whilst trained, were not up to the operational tempo of the rest of the team; it wasn't always their own fault, lack of experience had a lot to do with it, however very occasionally someone came in that was simply not working hard enough.

#### Flight without feathers is not easy

I said these words to one such fellow, a fresh-faced lad in his early twenties who had been inserted into the team [in my opinion] far too early. He struggled to keep pace with the rest of the team and despite being reasonably physically fit, his mental game left a lot to be desired. He was, in short, a lazy operator.

It had a lot to do with his natural ability, of which he had a lot; he thought he could float along, do the minimum, because he had some natural talent and it had always worked for him in the past. That might have worked in another team but in mine where the chaps were incredibly hard workers, it wasn't nearly enough. I demanded more from myself and, by default, everyone else as well.

I observed and evaluated and eventually determined his casual approach was of detriment and needed addressing.

I pulled him aside and had a chat asking what he was doing there, why he wanted to be there, what he thought he brought to the team and what he thought I wanted him to bring. To his credit, he said the right things, except for the part about *what he thought he was bringing.* Then I started talking and I left nothing on the table. He was clear, *abundantly clear.*

At the end of my attitude adjustment talk, I said, *flight without feathers is difficult.* He looked at me uncomprehendingly. I clarified. *It means, that to find success you need certain elements, skills, understanding, personal qualities like mental-toughness, a never-quit ethos and an attitude that leans hard into the task no matter the difficulties or reservations one faces.* I also told him if he didn't shape up I'd remove him.

At the time I never used the term, but if I said it now, I'd say, *you need to lift heavy shit,* which means the same thing...*Work hard, tirelessly, complete the task and look for more and work hard again.* It's about effort, persistence, self-respect, ownership and responsibility to oneself and team mates; shut up and get the job done.

#### Finding feathers and flying

Three months later, I could rely on that lad without question, as would the rest of the team. In that time he worked harder than everyone else and for longer, pushed the limits of his own physical and mental endurance and found that that limit was more distant than he had at first thought.

I remember the moment it dawned on him, a few days after that chat I had and it always makes me smile...it's like being reborn, *born again hard*, and it feels like one is free, limitless and weightless. It feels like flying. Of course, he didn't find feathers at all...*he found a reason to work harder, to deny his own barriers or limits, refuse to accept them - he found that his reason to lift heavy shit was more compelling than his reason not to...and he found a place in the team.*

I speak to that chap now and then these days. He and his wife run their very successful building company together which employs almost one hundred people. They have two lovely daughters and a pretty amazing, if hectic and sometimes stressful, life. He is doing ok...*I'd say he found his feathers and flew, figuratively speaking of course.

It's been over twenty five years since I quoted Plautus to that fresh-faced punk with way too much natural talent and a penchant for laxity; I was only three years older than he was at the time but had the responsibility to help him bring out his best; I couldn't do it for him. I recall the conversation like it was yesterday though and it makes me smile to know that he remembered it long after I said it.

I also recall the words he spoke to me only a few days after that chat. He'd retreated within himself, worked some things out, then came to me and said, *I'm ready to fly.*

Have you ever had to self-motivate from a position of laziness, poor attitude, performance or despondency? Have you motivated someone else to rise from those same situations? Feel free to tell me about it below, or just make a comment.

This has to be my favorite line:
> I also told him if he didn't shape up I'd remove him.

I am like the guy in your story. Although mine was a bit different.

*I had a manager before in (Jollibee) who needs my little help to surprise his friend's wife. My manager ask me to bring a bouquet of flowers to the wife of his friend to surprise her on valentines day. I never had given someone a flower before so the task was different. I told my manager that I cannot do it. He told me, "Okay, you can pack your things up, and never come back here."* Because he also meant that the same skill is needed in my job.

*The last thing I want that time was to lose my job as a service crew that supports my schooling in college." So, I really shaped myself up. I need to learn the skill of dealing with people, facing the crowd, and a lor more.

Sometimes we have to do things that are outside our usual scope or skill-set or just uncomfortable. I guess it's in those moments we need to decide who we are and who we *could be* and rise to the challenge or not. Often, later we realise it wasn't so difficult and feel glad for the new skills, understanding or paradigm.

Your message in this article seems to be directed at me and achieving success requires more than just dreaming.

Many times, we feel we are doing our best whereas there is more left in us that we are not seeing/doing but with people like you, we are called to notice and things will begin to change for good if we choose to drill ourselves more in the right position to achieve our dreams.

Not you specifically, just anyone who wants to read...and who is slacking off, not taking ownership, laying blame, failing to take responsibility and expecting things to happen without applying any effort.

> feel we are doing our best whereas there is more left in us that we are not seeing/doing but with people like you, we are called to notice

I agree...Myself included, although I am constantly evaluating myself and performance, what I do, how I think and act...and then adjust accordingly. If that is done, and one applies some of the principles that will carry them towards greater results, *greater results will happen.*

What other way to describe a good leader, a team player and one who is progress conscious other than this. Most leaders I have met are too proud , wanting you to err so that they eject you and bring someone from their kin, but see how you fatherly retrain this lad and now you are proud of him and I'm sure he would live to ever remember how much you sharpen his team spirit and work experience. I just have to copy paste the link to this post for reference purpose and for my own learning too. Thanks @galenkp

It seems like you've run foul of some very bad leaders, as a good one wouldn't want their people to err so that they can chastise or remove them, purely for egotistical reasons. Leaders empower others, not hold them back.

Sound fact, but to say I haven't met some bad leaders is like saying I never drank water. One once told me he has my sack letter hanging by his pinna he made everything possible to fault me but I was wise enough to jump over his traps till he stole from the company and he was dismissed shamefully.

The young man in your life story Galen did not change your goals, desires, and dreams, he only learned to actively listen to what you taught him and understood that success is a lifestyle of always turning "failures" into learnings to obtain victory.

I have gone through that, recognizing and acting on the value of commitment to fly with one's own wings.

That's a very cool phrase from Plautus, sir.

"I'm ready to fly" is a saying born of a person who has trained hard, has a sense of responsibility, and is committed to himself.
Getting someone to say, "I'm ready to fly," takes encouragement from someone who has already flown high.

A motivator, a mentor, a coach, or another similar role is a lighter for a beginner. But not everyone is able to make others ready to fly. Not all pilots can make others fly, right? That is why a person who is a leader must also have the ability to be a motivator, mentor, or coach for his members.

I rarely give direct orders, but I can be a spark to get my members to do something with analytical questioning techniques, and I help them find solutions to their own problems by opening their own wings.

Empowering a team to achieve of their own accord is often better than ordering them too. Unfortunately, a lot of people are authoritarian and they're often attracted to roles that give them the chance to order and be followed unquestioningly which is why bad leaders are often found in places like the military. Of course, there's also many good ones.

Good goals to have...do you have plans in place to attain those things this year? Have you evaluated the reasons why you didn't make those things happen last year? I'd say that's a good start point.

I confess that laziness has never belonged to me at work, due to my professional approach I have always done more than what was required of me.

In the same way, I happened to find myself in situations where I had to motivate the team I managed because it happens when you have high standards for yourself first and for others obviously you don't find good collaborators.

Often it's not the cup of others who do a normal job, but when you're used to excellence everything becomes more complicated.
The fact remains that a good leader knows how to motivate his men to make them perform at their best.

That collaborator of yours was lucky to meet you, I think he changed his life for the better because you were able to motivate him to give the best of himself.

@galenkp ·
I've generally had high standards of myself and that usually means I expect a lot from others (in my teams and other places). It's a good thing as people are often inspired by leaders who work hard, and sometimes not a good thing as people can feel like they will never measure up which negatively affects performance (and attitude) most often. So, I've had to learn that about myself and adapt it, temper it at times and work around it to suit the needs of the situation.

Like you say, a leader knows how to motivate, empower also, and it's important to understand the situation and make it work rather than stay upon a course that may suit the leaders thoughts and feelings, but ultimately lead to failure.

Only all the time :)

Glad the kid motivated, could have just as easily gone all snitty knowing that he was doing just fine thanks and he was right and you were wrong and then you might have had to kick him off the team instead and then his life may have ended up the same if he'd finally picked up the lesson further on or completely different if he never did XD

*Thinking he was doing fine*...because he was not *actually doing fine,* fromo my and the team's perspective.

Had he chosen that path, he would have been gone, no question.

I don't know how that might have gone. The jolt he needed to alert him to his lazy ways? A bad/lazy attitude that declined further affecting the rest of his life? These days, maybe even a claim of bullying I guess. Who knows?

What happened though, is he *lifted heavy shit,* and has continued to do so throughout his life leading him to where he is today. I don't take the credit, he did it all himself, I just pushed him in the right direction, well...*gave him the choice to go that way,* at least. It's an interesting concept to think what may have happened if he did not.

I should have put it in quotes as it was a sarcastic "knowing", like when people know they're right so hard there's no room for any opinion that isn't 100% agreeing with them and even irrefutable proof can't budge them XD

I think those decision trees a lot. Sometimes to idiotic levels of granularity.

A wonderful piece you've shared here. Sometimes, we are just limited by our minds and mental dispositions that we fail to achieve our potential, and just like the young lad some decades ago, we just need that big push to move above our limits. It is quite discomforting to be pushed sometimes, but it only takes a humble person to see beyond the way the message was presented, to looking deep into the message and following through on it.

Our words of motivation and encouragement could be the nudge a person simply needs to attain greater heights.

For myself, I've been quite hesitant to delve into deeper aspects of information technology, citing excuses such as being too busy and protecting my vision (I've a very sensitive sight), however, towards the later part of 2022, I knew I had to grow beyond my current state, with no one to motivate me, I decided to motivate myself. I've started with simple IT stuffs such as Software Testing/Manual QA, and Tech Support, and hope to delve deeper into these with time.

To fly, we definitely need feathers, and such feathers could be more than standing in a higher ground, we also need the will and force (be it internal/external) to make the first move.

Getting out of ones comfort zone can be confronting, but it's by doing so that one finds their limits, and the ability to push them...and therein lies the opportunity to make great gains.

We *can't do anything we set out minds to*, that's a useless statement, but the right thoughts and attitudes will help us move closer to some of the things we want to achieve and I'd say that's worth the effort. If the reason to work harder, more efficiently, to learn more and to get a little uncomfortable is compelling enough, then better results can be attained.

Taking the first step is the right way to proceed, but before that comes thought and the right attitudes.
