Finding reflection

Finding a place to reflect upon life often revolves around the outdoors for me; A remote place where I can't hear societies' noise, won't run into people and can feel closer to the planet and myself is preferable to things like meditation. I have a tendency to overthink things so finding a little balance is always welcome; It's time to shut down and find peace, solace, *relaxation and reflection.* It's something I actively and often seek.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/galenkp/23zS7bg9LMj9ZmLgL71X21f8BLg2MGwegJYMg43b8GW5L56pZSEu33MmAXeEbtLMWN1xQ.jpg

Some find that solace through religion but I'm not even remotely a religious man and don't feel the need for that type of spiritual guidance or support - I've seen enough life to know *my actions determine my outcomes* and have seen devout and religious people come to grief just as often and easily as those who don't hold that faith or belief. *Live and let live* and each to their own though right?

So, that begs the question, *how did I find myself in a cathedral?*

One of my methods of finding relaxation and reflection, besides seeking the outdoors, is knowing stuff. I *need to know things* and often that leads me to delve into history. I know many aren't the least bit interested in it but I find history fascinating. Because of this I often find myself in places I'd not normally go, just because I'm chasing down detail, fact or information to satisfy that curiosity. This is one such place, Salisbury Cathedral, UK.

I actually came to view one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta, a very old and extremely important historical document. See below from Wikipedia:

>Magna Carta is a royal charter of rights agreed to by King John of England at Runnymede, near Windsor, on 15 June 1215. First drafted by Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton to make peace between the unpopular king and a group of rebel barons, it promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown, to be implemented through a council of 25 barons. Neither side stood behind their commitments, and the charter was annulled by Pope Innocent III, leading to the First Barons' War.

It is held in the 13th century Chapter House just to the side of the Cathedral itself and due to my love of history, and almost insatiable desire to know stuff, it was high on my list of things to see when I was in the United Kingdom. But I found other value too.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/galenkp/243WVjts2rUWJdR4AWbJQQGUtCUD5UzctHvSxiNEmCkTKWRCDKwhQpGGTxjrsjwQhY9zc.jpg

I knew I'd find the cathedral interesting but it also made me feel quite reflective and relaxed too. I don't know why, maybe just because it was cool and quiet inside. I wonder how many people felt the same since the year 1220 when it began construction? What was very cool though was the font which perfectly reflected the cathedral on its surface.

It was made by William Pye, constructed in bronze around 2008. You can learn more by following that link if you're interested. 👉***SALISBURY CATHEDRAL FONT***. The cool thing is that it's so perfectly level that the water flows evenly from its four spouts and the surface resembles a perfectly smooth piece of glass. I'm sorry my pictures don't do it justice - You'll have to trust me that it's cool!

In the pictures you can also see a *flock of white paper doves* flying away overhead which was placed there for an exhibition and I thought it was kind of cool reflected in the font, what do you think? Cool yes?

I spent about ninety minutes in and around Salisbury Cathedral and enjoyed my time there. I ticked off seeing the Magna Carta and was pleasantly surprised to experience a nice reflective moment standing by that font feeling small and insignificant beneath the massive and incredibly old structure above me.

No, I didn't *see the light* and all of a sudden become devout, in fact I'm rather surprised I didn't get struck by a bolt of lightning and sent to the underworld where I probably belong the very moment I stepped into the place. I'm pleased about that. It was a nice little moment of reflective thought though and satisfied my need to know stuff. A win-win scenario...Old stuff and a little self-reflection.

I thought that was an ultra polished piece of granite or something. Crazy how it’s water! Love that and the stuff above, birds?

Churches are pretty cool places to visit for their architectural and historical perspectives. Seeing the many churches all over Italy was remarkable and the grandeur to them. It definitely gave one some time to reflect on things in life and what’s important, at least for us.

I’ve developed my own spiritual identity through my experience. I’ve gone through many stages, catholic, atheist and now to a point where I have some beliefs in certain aspects of something but not anything like the organized money laundering that goes on. It’s my own stuff and gives me some peace so I enjoy it. After growing up in a quasi-catholic house, I got sick of that real quick when I got older for many reasons.

Yeah, it's pretty cool huh? A pretty nice feat of design and workmanship. Yeah, those white birds were an exhibition, something to do with peace of some such concept that is not very easy for humans to make happen. Lol.

Those Duomo's in Italy are off the chain right? Been in a few...Almost museums and art galleries really. Same in the UK and France, all through EU I suppose.

>I have some beliefs in certain aspects of something but not anything like the organized money laundering that goes on. It’s my own stuff and gives me some peace so I enjoy it

I have beliefs too mate, spirituality...I just don't need to go anywhere, an icon or imaginary friend to find it. It's with me no matter where I go, and of course, it doesn't make demands on me, commend fear, or my wallet. I think we're the same in that.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

The sense of history in the famous old cathedrals is so incredible and the Reflection in that font is amazing. That is a really great shot. The last time I was in London I got to tour Lambeth Palace. The residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and his family for 800 years. It oozes history.

I totally hear ya on the religion and loving history. I am not really a history buff (my hubby more so - he totally had to see THE Rosetta Stone when we visited London 😃), but I love, love, loooove all the old places, mostly back in Europe. Castles, churches, cathedrals, graveyards - they are all so full of stories and - art. I love art. And just wandering old towns in a European city is awesome. I would frequently visit Great Britain for a week of B&B and 'castle hopping'. Wandering around the castles or ruins, stopping here and there or sitting on a bench overlooking 'insert a great view' and then my mind would start wandering. Back to the times when there was real life in those places, life that is being romanticized by today's movies, but in reality... I usually ended those mental wanderings being thankful that I live today and not back then. Well, maybe I did live back then, but I don't remember 😂

For me there's something about being in places where people just like me played out their lives long ago. I can almost feel their presence still and it makes me wonder about them, their lives, what they did and where they went. I like to know things, investigate, and so history allows me to do that.

When in the UK A couple years back I got to indulge in it, the castles and all, and I've travelled Europe to do the same...I find it all interesting. War history too, a big focus of mine.

Anyway, seems like me and your husband have that in common, and you have a great appreciation of it too.

Thanks for the comment and yeah, maybe we all lived before and can't remember it...An interesting concept.

Speaking of war history, when living in Germany we took a long weekend trip to the Maginot Line and Normandy, The Beaches, I bet you would have liked it. Maybe I should post some photos from it. I always wonder what to post, I'm just not too good with words. But - I like reading yours. Of course, it helps that you're an Aussie bloke and I lived in Oz, Melbourne, for three year a long, long time ago. Thank you.

How did you find yourself in a cathedral? Easy it was probably old and interesting XD

That font is pretty damn cool, I didn't register it as water :O

True words of reflection😊. That calm place where you can reflect on yourself and think of all you have done and what steps to make next.

Beautiful pictures❤

For me, there's a special garden park which i find it a place of solace 😊. Where i see nature at it's fullest, sometimes i draw my inspiration from there.
