I been looking at my wood with something akin to dismay upon my face. It was hard and way too big; it needed dealing with, but the act of doing so was daunting...and so I'd put it off for some time. It had no choice but to deal with though, my big hard wood couldn't stay like that forever; it needed to come back down in size.
***

This weekend has been stress-free and relaxed. I've slept in just a little, hiked every day and and even found a chocolate Easter egg in a tree at the park; the remnant of a kids Easter egg hunt. Sucks to be them, *finders keepers you little buggers!* I've watched Netflix, began the *Lost in Space* series, which isn't too bad at all - It's not grabbed me as others have, but it's watchable and generally had an enjoyable time.

But speaking of grabbing...My wood.

It's Monday today I'm going to spend the day working around the house. I have a holiday coming up in four days and this is my last chance to get a few things completed. My list is:

- Remove and re-fix a jasmine creeper mesh (my last attempt was a fail)
- Empty my vegetable garden beds and condition the soil ready for the next planting
- Tidy my workshop (It's always tidy, so I mean *tidy some more*)
- Attend to my massive wood

I've had some chunks of tree that are too big for my firepit. They will burn of course, but they take too long to do so and require far too much heat so they need to be split and cut into manageable firewood. For that, I need a block-splitter which I do not have. [Yes, there actually *is* a tool I do not have folks.] I don't mean a hand tool here, I mean one of those mechanical block-splitters that make splitting blocks a piece of cake. But I haven't got one.

No, today I'm doing it the hard way...A block-splitting wedge and a sledge hammer. I know, it's going to suck.

Basically, one takes the block-splitting wedge, holds it in place, and smashes down with mighty god-like force upon the back of it with the sledge hammer. The theory is, the wedge splits the block. From there, further splitting can be done with an axe.

Dealing with my big wood today is not going to be easy. It will leave me tired and aching, and *despite the fact I'll feel like Thor*, I'm probably going to regret the few hours it'll take me. Having said that, I guess I'll also feel a sense of relief and some degree of satisfaction that the big hard wood has been reduced in size through my efforts and attention.

Have you ever been confronted with big hard wood that you had to, or wanted to, deal with? How did you do it and how did you feel when you were done? Feel free to comment below.

Dealing with big hard wood with a sledgehammer made me wince. There are better ways of sorting that out you know? 😉

Yes, sledge hammers are a little overkill as a big hard wood situation solution but it was the only thing which came to mind. The wood was brought down to size and all worked out.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

I've used these wedges before when I was tree felling pines and eucalyptus in alien tree clearing, they work well although I wasn't using them to split the wood as such. If you cut a wedge into a tree while felling and you need to make sure that it falls in the correct direction, you can use those wedges.

Hope your muscles don't scream too much later tonight, although that kind of workout always feels worth it.

> If you cut a wedge into a tree while felling and you need to make sure that it falls in the correct direction, you can use those wedges.

I've felled some trees in my day. This one particular time me and three others decided to not use a wedge; it was a unanimous decision but one that had problematic results. The tree fell the wrong way. It's ok though, I was at the base with the chain saw. The other three? Well, let's just say they will never have to make another decision about anything.

My muscles are feeling not so fucken good. But yeah, hard work has never killed anyone. Hmm, well yeah I guess it has, but it didn't kill *me today*, so it's all good.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

Yes... I think back in 2020!
Unlike you I had encountered that Mr. Wood not in any random lawn rather in wild while struggling for survival.
We (team) were travelling (that was our 3rd day of trekking) and our destination was the highest cascade of that hill tract area.

There were two way to reach that cascade.
1. You cross a long way and get on the highest peak and then come down a littke straight and there you reach the perfect destination to enjoy that cascade
2. Or you start from the bottom of the cascade and ride throughout the trail to reach that perfect spot.

This time we mixed up the trails in the beggining and had to follow the trail that start from the bottom and gradually to go up by that trail of thin water canal, shar high pitched rocks and so on.

And on the midway we had encountered a wood. A huge tree was just naturally eradicated by it’s root and blocking the road. It also seemed slippery and risky because of long time being under the rain and all.

And of course all we had with us are dry foods and some clothes in oir backpack. Nothing to deal with this kind of huge wood.

So either we have to take the risk and cross it over or we turn back and take the trail to go where we started.
3 of us actually did and visited the cascade. But with other 2, I hadn’t had the guts to deal with it with all those fatiuge, wet clothes, bag for heavy rain 😶
I still feel like that damn wood was smirking and laughing at us 😒

Of course not! That's impossible even all of us try together without any tool.
We went back to the trail we came, from where we had started.

3 of us did ride over the wood and succeeded to see the cascade.
Other 3 of us waited there with all there bags (who went to see the cascade) and stuff. Later when those 3 came back after seeing the cascade, we left through the trail we came

Since I'm a woman, I've never had hard wood to resolve, but I have helped others with theirs on occasion. 🤣

My Dad loved to split wood with a wedge and an axe for the fireplace and later the wood stove. He did that for years. Later in life, he purchased a gas powered hydraulic wood splitter and used that instead. He would have the tree trunks delivered to his yard and he would use the chainsaw to get them down into liftable sizes and then usually he and my brothers would have a wood splitting day where they would split, stack and cover it to dry out for later use.

It was quite a job, even with the splitter.

This, my dear Jacey, just earned you a 100% upvote on this comment.

> gas powered hydraulic wood splitter

This is what I referred to in the post, and is what I'm no in ownership of. I feel less of a man for not owning one. (Not really.) I'd love one, but I just don't have the constant need of it so I do it the old fashioned *Thor-style* way.

Thanks for your comment and seeing the (clearly) humorous side to my text.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

Oh ! Thank you for paying me for that ! ahahahahahaaha

I'm sure it would not make sense to invest in a splitter if you did not burn wood for heat all winter long. In their case, their house was a split level house and the downstairs of the two level side was one huge den. In the winter, there was a fire there most days, so they had stacks of wood out back all the time, waiting it's turn to burn. I think they may have rented one a time or two before Dad gave in and bought one, but I don't really know if renting was really expensive or not.

Although I know it has nothing to do with it, while reading your post I remembered the wooden cross that Jesus of Nazareth had to carry. And why not, in the amount of problems that some people have to carry on their shoulders. Like your wood, those problems will need the right tools to be solved and sometimes, people don't have those tools. Everything would be easier if we had the right tools to solve problems. Have a nice Monday, @galenkp. And good luck with your wood

I can usually get by with a splitting maul and wedges, but I have a story about some big stubborn wood that I just could not seem to beat into submission. I had a pair of big Monterey pines in my yard in California that died and needed cutting down. Splitting them by hand was literally impossible. It was extremely twisted and gummy.

I bought three different log splitters. The first one was one of those electric hydraulic ones. That one broke almost immediately. The second one was a screw type one that augers into the wood, powered by the 3-point pto on the tractor, and it worked pretty good for a little while but eventually that one broke from the shaft bending. The twisted grains were just too much for those machines.

Third one was a charm. It was made with a dump truck cylinder and so the shaft was very girthy. It was kind of dangerous because the design allowed the front of the ram to move side to side as it thrust, and the pieces would sometimes shoot out of there when they popped loose and fling off in unexpected directions. It still struggled to push through. Ultimately I prevailed, and the wood was taken down.

This is a story of determination and triumph over big hard wood and it brings hope to those struggling with their own hard wood (big or otherwise) that they will be able to reduce the hard wood to size. 😆

I wish I had a block-splitter however that last one you mention sounds a little dodgy. Being struck by hard wood like that may prove quite detrimental I'd say.

Thanks for sharing your hard wood story.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

Your photo just reminds me of people deriding "old men taking photos of trees" which seems to be part of every photography course on the planet XD

I did get mildly exasperated with J's insane volume of tree photos when he was practising but trees are a pretty good subject because they're big, easy to compose and don't freaking move, and have nice textures for closeups so kind of obvious why they're main subjects

Wood splitting sounds like hard work, least you'll get more muscle building out of it? x_x

Haven't had to physically split any wood, we do have fireplaces in the house but they got stuff put in them (the kitchen fireplace has the stove in it and the living room fireplace has a gas outlet and gas heater).

All done now? :)

All done, yes. And I regret every swing, *Thor-like* though it was. I think I'll be carrying the muscle soreness for a few days but my wood went down to size and will not fit perfectly in the firepit.

I've never done a photography course and didn't know they set tree-photographing as an assignment. It makes sense. I went to the *just point-shoot-and-hope school of photography and whilst it's not great it serves my purpose.

I hope you'll are having a good weekend.
