Mycro macro

Not too long ago I was doing a tidy up in my home office and came across this little camera, originally my dad's. I left it on my desk for a few weeks until I decided to take a few photos of it just for fun. Unfortunately, I didn't really know how best to present it and so what you see here is about the best of the bunch. I tried some darker shots, not sure what that style is called, and well...they came out sort of shit in my opinion, but I'm thick-skinned and can take the criticism if the shots draw any.

The Mycro is what's called a subminature camera and hails from Japan, originally released by a company around 1939 and sold throughout World War Two and beyond. By the 1950's it had gained a cult following and the original company name was changed to Mycro (MYCRO CAMERA COMPANY. LTD)

I'm not sure when my dad got this camera however, being a Mycro IIIA which was released in around 1953, I'd imagine it to have been about then. My dad would have been in his mid-20's at that time and working as a school teacher so I guess he had the money to spend on a little fad-item like this.

The camera came with a pretty cool brown leather case and looks and operates just like any other camera. One could also get a tripod and filter for it however I have neither and am not sure if my dad ever got them.

I'm not sure if this camera still works and I'd need 17.5mm film to find out. It was capable of ten exposures from a roll and I guess it took a reasonable photo considering that many thousands of people bought one...or maybe the temptation to buy this novelty/cult camera was simply too difficult to deny.

My dad's camera isn't in very good condition, it's seventy years old after all and carried some wear and tear with some of the plating beginning to come off. I wish it worked though as I'd be interested to see what photos were possible and it'd be nice to take some shots on a camera my dad once used. 

Alas, I can't make it work so I'll have it as a keepsake and pass it on to my niece of nephew when the time is right, I think they'll appreciate having something that their granddad once owned and used.

I don't suppose anyone here has had any experience with, or exposure to, this camera before, but if you have and also have some shots taken on one I'd be interested to see. I don't expect the quality to be very good, certainly nothing like what a full-sized camera would produce I guess, but it'd be interesting to see nonetheless.

Nope, I'm afraid not. Given the history though, it would be pretty cool to get some film for it and get a few photos of things you are into or that maybe remind you of your Dad, it doesn't matter if the quality is lacking, it's more the fact that it was his and you'll be creating new images all these years later with the same hardware. There's something cool about that, that's my take on it anyway.

I'm glad you like them. I was reasonably happy with them although they didn't do what I hoped they would. I don't use editing programs to edit my photos though, so I guess I'll never get the results others get. I don't mind, I like a more honest approach to it anyway.

Very interesting little camera. It does remind me of something from a 007 movie or the like 😀. It is so cool you have something like that of your father's. It would be something else if you could get it to work. 

I hope to pass on some small family keepsakes when I am gone. Maybe my kids will even keep some of my own trash, who knows.

It's pretty cool. One day I'll see if I can track down some film for it, I'm not hopeful, but it's worth a try. If I was to get some I'd post about it. 

I have many keepsakes, some much older than this camera, which I'll be passing along to my niece and nephew, and, of course, there's my own stuff to hand on to them as well. I have some pretty legit knives my nephew will get eventually. @mrbonkers is not five years old yet though, so it'll have to wait, maybe a year or two. 😂

I'm built backwards... LOL

for me - I've found that the offline life has become so make-believe and surreal, and the friends and connections I've made here in the online have been so much more real.  I know it's not that way for everyone!  but.. for me  - it's just so.... tangible and connected!!!  And the 10 or so that I've connected with in the "in-between"  - it's just been some of the most impactful times in my life.  pretty wild to experience!  so much so  - that i simply want more of it! LOL

so I'm actually taking a temporary break from the online - to delve back into the offline - to make a way for the ability to bring the online -  INTO my offline.

I like it, and especially with the emotional attachment, even better. 

While you probably wouldn't get (what you would consider) a technically perfect shot with the camera, I like how all the different cameras have their own personality. 

There are a lot of camera sites with aficionados looking for film or someone looking to sell the film. It would be fun to see if you could score some and take a few shots.

I like the way you took the shots and put them together.

What a cute little camera! This is not unsolicited advice, but if I were you, I'd totally try and track down some film for it and try it out. I love that it came with it's own little leather carry case! This is the kind of thing that I would buy because it's different and would probably become a collector's item.

Thanks Erikah, There was only so many ways I could shoot this thing I guess. I suppose there's probably things I didn't think of, but I'm a rather blunt instrument after all. My goodness, that's a beautiful thing!...I've never seen a micro camera of this brand!...But it looks like one of those things you want to have forever!...I'm glad it's still there with you and it belonged to your father... Wow really nice, lucky to own one and also it has sentimental value which makes it even more important.
Even if it is not functional, I think it remains a beautiful memory to keep.

Very nice pictures taken as well as the post ... you know that among other things you made me want to look for a similar machine, it would be nice to have one as a collector's item ... I'm already looking for it heh heh!

Thanks mate, it's pretty cool huh? I reckon it would work, I just need the film. It's in good condition except for some of the plating being a little pitted. Maybe I should get some film (if it's available) and try it out.

Eh eh and if I told you that I found a Mycro?
I'm negotiating with the seller, let's see if I can get it at a good price... I have my birthday on Monday, I could give it to myself.
From Monday we could practically already be Mycro's brothers!

However you know that as far as the film is concerned I'm having trouble finding it, maybe I have to see specialized photography sites.
