Last week I secured a big account I've been working on for a couple weeks. The engineering company holds government contracts to supply railway track sections and manufactures, among other things, a specific part of rail line called a *railroad switch or turnout*. Essentially, the *switch,* moves the rails which diverts the trains' wheels from one set of tracks onto another - Say, a straight rail line into a siding.

The government contracts means they have many loads moving which take time to load and unload, being very heavy steel sections, so the account revenue is significant for the transport company I work for. It's a handy account to have and I'm pleased I secured it.

![20220715_084501-COLLAGE.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/galenkp/AK2EdLBsYFAeYPMZR9GZqBARnNwCrPU5uhK7pqBqdJQN4AkUi85P4Y1E3xTsbtC.jpg)

I won the account Tuesday and on Friday their first load moved, a 26 metre (85 foot) section of *switch*, that was headed for installation on a local section of rail line that day.

Despite being in *management and not operations* I make a point of attending the first load with a new account to ensure it goes smoothly and to show that we care enough to be there. It's good for relationship-building which drives further revenue which all adds to my budget so...I turned up Friday

Some of the chaps from the engineering companies' rail division did the loading and careful placement of the rails by crane, and the driver chained the load of course, which left nothing for me to do but be there, take a few snaps and shake hands before the load moved. I'm happy to say yesterday's initial load went smoothly and without incident which is good as *incidents* with loads like this often mean big problems, injury or death.

![20220715_084329-COLLAGE.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/galenkp/AJkSmqsJosALw32p8oTTJko3gdFUo662RmgcoFcSU465GB7nG2HmjEagRcXJxCG.jpg)

Above you can see various shots of the rails themselves and the loading process onto the flat bed semi-trailer. For the switch-rails they used two overhead cranes due to the weight and for the single rail sections just the one, centrally mounted.

Because this is a switch section some of the rails are curved and it's quite incredible to think that these solid rail track lengths can be precisely bent and angled to suit considering the heavy gauge of steel used - I saw the machinery used in the bending and angle process and *yep, it's as serious-looking as you'd expect it to be.*

![800x600 .png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/galenkp/Eoc8SvFu81X2kgcpDyiQFtGzGirWrFs2gL1qRBSWRCErMYT2evDiELUawfDhqev9mdi.png)

In the shot above you can see a 200L drum on a pallet and a crate beside it, just to the right of shot. That was also part of the load. The drum contains *e-clips*, also made by this company; they hold the rail sections to the concrete sleepers when laid. The crate contains the other bits and pieces required like: rail tie plates, insulators, rail shoulder and several other things, all made from steel and all heavy as fuck.
***

I tend to be very diligent when it comes to my job, *or anything for that matter*, and I don't like doing things by halves which is why take the time to front up at the first load of a new account. I also take the first invoice personally the following week, with a couple dozen donuts, it's a small thing but seems to make a difference. Me being there allows them the opportunity to tell us we did a good job and helps builds a layer of value, and also allows them raise any issues directly to me rather than email or on the phone where communication can be ineffective. Bing there in person often results in them opening up about future work as they are usually feeling pretty good about the first job so it's a win-win.

This company has many contracts and manufactures various things, not just rails, and I'm excited about winning the account which, into the future, will generate a lot of revenue for the trucking company I work for and considering that's my job and I get commissions paid commensurate to revenue generated, I'm pretty pleased.

What's really cool about my job is that *everything needs transportation*. Companies and businesses don't make things to stockpile, *they make them to sell* and they need to be moved to the market. Trucking keeps Australia moving and the amount of money spent on transport is immense which means a lot of opportunities for me. Building relationships is key to winning accounts and contracts and it's the strength of relationships that determines ultimate success, so it's relationships I work on building.

Why aren't you loading these on a rail flat car? :-p

Is that 100 lb rail? Or just 83?

> People are basically the same the world over. Everybody wants the same things - to be happy, to be healthy, to be at least reasonably prosperous, and to be secure. Unfortunately this is not true.
There are psychopaths and narcissists that live among us, and they do not believe in any of this.
There are also dark individuals, so tied up in their pain, that they want everyone else to be as miserable as them.
There are people who's jealousy is such that because they are not prosperous, they want to drag everyone else down to their level.

We, as a society are not going to be able to let these people continue to run amok.
We will have to devise policies and plans to deal with these society/life destructive forces.
(and these will need to be something more than the punishment system we have now.
probably the first thing to do is ban single mothers)

> Why aren't you loading these on a rail flat car?

Because flat rail cars run on rails, behind locomotives, and this load needed to run from the factory to the rail line on roads, *not rail roads.* I would have thought that was obvious.

Unfortunately, i am one who knew too much, and tried to make a joke.

Almost no one has a rail spur anymore.
And into model railroading, looking at all the neat M.O.W. train cars. (maintenance of the way)

It is neat seeing the trains carrying rails. About a mile long articulated car.

But, the really neat stuff is how they fix the rails while on top of the rails.

*Yes!!!*

I agree that being there is beneficial to both you and them, leaving open the opportunity to communicate on a different level. Building relationships is your middle name.

I hope you (had) are having a great hike!

That is interesting to hear that you go for the first run.

Previously you had somewhat mentioned that once you made the sale, it was up to others to follow through and it crossed my mind that hopefully there was a good backup team. No matter what you agree too, if others drop the ball behind you, it doesn't look good for you either as you "promised". I can understand doing the "due diligence" to make sure things go smoothly and to also give the customers the opportunity to give you feedback face to face.

It is always amazing to see what all has to move, everything as you said, but when you are not in an industry, it is impossible to think of all the things it affects.

I never even considered how railway tracks might need to be custom made.
I worked with a guy once who'd previously spent months out replacing sleepers on remote lines.
He said they had plenty of notice when a train was coming through, so they could get well clear of the tracks, grab the thermos for a coffee and a cigarette and wave as it went past. He said the company averaged 2 complaints a week, from passengers claiming to have gone past and seen them slacking off instead of working.
The reception girl took to asking what they should've been doing instead, which usually ended the call fairly quick.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting to see the process and I'm glad to have seen some of it in person. The equipment is incredible and the precision is also. I guess rail tracks are not something a person thinks much about, but when one considers what's riding on it, *literally*, it makes sense that the rail road is built to exacting standards.

Working around things that big sounds terrifying (I say coming from a mining town where the vehicles while nowhere near as large as some of the mining vehicles around here can get, are still pretty damn big), so of course that's the kind of thing my eldest is into XD

Looks like you got into a great sector.

Is it a normal thing or a good to do thing to attend the first loadout? I know precious little about this industry except that everything would go to hell in a handbasket very fast if it fell apart or everyone decided they were striking x_x

As I said in the post, and you probably know yourself, if the trucks stop moving Australia would also. It's that simple. So, strike action would certainly be a disruption.

Also, I don't have to go to the first load, that's operations job. I go because I'm diligent and know that through that show solidarity will come a better relationship and more revenue because of it.

Aw man, I'm almost jealous. I love trains - have loved them since I was a kid - and always enjoy the opportunity to see how all that shit works. I'd be like an excited kid there, pointing and laughing about everything.

Nice that you got a good sale out of it, too!

It's really interesting to see how they do things. Bending a length of rail is remarkably straight forward, although has to be done precisely; get it wrong and things don't fit. Considering they stop trains for hours to put the rails in, there's no margin for error as errors cost massive amounts of time and money.

Yeah, it's a good account, which we should retain for years so.. millions of dollars of revenue. A good win.
