As far as shooting firearms go, there's little better than banging away on a long gun at range in my estimation. It's where I feel at home from a firearms/shooting perspective; it's my niche, a discipline I've spent years learning and am good at it; not ego, just fact. I love the way so many scientific elements come together in order to send a projectile accurately out to a mile and more, and over the years I've unlocked many secrets allowing me the abilty to lay down behind my long guns and put a round on target accurately, first time, and repeatedly.

I use these skills in my side-gig as a registered shooter, culling on a cattle farm, which helps keep my skills sharp although I usually shoot at very close range in this situation, out to about 350 metres (382 yards) which is relatively straightforward. The reason is that head shots are required under regulation to ensure humane dispatch of the animal. I refer to kangaroos here, with deer it's unregulated. Bullet flight-time at greater distances means there's a chance the target could move and, with kangaroos being unpredictable, I play it safe. At 350 metres, using my culling rifle-system, flight time is 0.42 seconds and I bracket the target meaning I account for any slight movement the target may make to still ensure a good impact; at 1000 metres it's 1.36 seconds meaning more time for the target to shift out of the flight path. Considering the small size of a kangaroo's head it leaves too much to chance.

The other day I decided I'd like a little more of a challenge, just for fun, and took my **Warwick WFA1** to the farm instead of my culling rifle. You can see it pictured. This short rifle is chambered in .223 which is very similar to the 5.56 NATO round, only with less pressure. The 5.56 is for military applications and the .223 for civilian generally. This rifle is custom-built to compete in *run and gun* events in which I generally would only shoot out to 200 metres (273 yards) on torso-sized targets. I have it set up with a red-dot scope with only 2x magnification so at long range it's virtually useless. The calibre and rifle combination are accurate well past 200 metres though, and I'd confidently shoot to 500 metres with the appropriate scope to get a good sight picture on the target.

I chose to take this rifle as I'd need to work my way far closer to the targets than with my long-range guns and that's the challenge, *the stalk.*

One doesn't simply walk up to a kangaroo in the wild, tap it on the shoulder and say g'day, certainly not one that remembers being shot at. They are flighty, have excellent sense of smell and hearing and their vision is keen. Once they register a threat (or anything out of place) they bound away (generally), and the opportunity is lost. Stalking them is an exercise in patience, positioning and silent movement. I typically stay rock still until they bend down to crop grass and then move, rolling my feet from heel to toes as I walk being mindful of where each footfall goes; gum tree bark and fallen leaves crackle like eating corn chips (but louder). Approaching them from downwind is, of course, required. With my WFA1 I'd need to get within about 100 metres to make a headshot and ensure a humane dispatch.

I love shooting this gun, it's just so much fun. The recoil is low, thanks to the calibre itself and muzzle brake, it's relatively light and manoeuvrable and I'm able to shoot it quickly when required. I carried it around during my stalks and shot it a couple times at just over 100 metres with predictable results. It's certainly not the ideal rifle-system for this sort of thing but the fun factor makes up for that.

The last time I fired this rifle was in competition and it was a whole lot of fun; on this occasion it was less about the rifle and more about the stalk, the challenge of getting close to the target which, with kangaroos, is incredibly difficult. I had a good time, got a sore back from standing in place and hunched over for lengthy periods and enjoyed blowing the cobwebs from this rifle. *(And if you believe there's cobwebs in my rifles you're bloody bonkers.)*

I can tell you had a good time playing with this gun. After the cobwebs were removed that is.. lol. I knew better than to believe you! hehe. I am not familiar with a "Muzzle Brake", but makes perfect sense to me. That in itself would make the whole experience more pleasurable. Beautiful gun.

The brake helps to manage the recoil which, on a .223 isn't too bad anyway, but makes it so nice to shoot. It's a lovely little firestick and yep, zero cobwebs.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

That’s a nice looking rifle and it sounds like a good test of your skills to switch it up for culling and go for something close range instead of long range, considering the difference between the normal and this one. One of these days I’ll have one!

Personally I thought that 223 was higher pressure because of quite a few high pressure and hot loaded environment rounds and the additional support of the chamber with a huge amount of steel and the bolt action.

I may be wrong however then again we might both be right.

Really nice rifle you have there. And I bet that is a fun thing to take that shooting.

I think I'm going to have to go for the low power variable optic here soon. I am thinking 1 to 10 power first focal plane is going to be something I can easily swap back and forth.

It's pretty incredible how much scopes for multiple rifles as well as multiple calibers start to add up to.

Hmm, well every book I've read or training I've attended has indicated that the 556 runs at higher pressure and so a 556 chambered rifle can run .223 but a .223 chambered rifle cannot (should not) run 556.

I'm no expert so defer to those who are, or present themselves as such, I guess. I'm not willing to run 556 in my WFA1 to find out.

And yep, scopes. My rule is (on my long range guns) the scope *must* cost more than the rifle itself. Long range shooting with a sub-standard scope is basically just guessing.

I am just known too many individuals that have loaded 223 with hot loads so like I said you might be right.

And 20 years ago we were just getting into fixed four power ACOG scopes. Now with first vocal plane and modern targeting crosshairs. It absolutely does get us to be able to reach out.

By the way I've got something you and me probably can argue about.

Only accurate rifles are interesting. LoL

I like a good .223 rifle. While generally not legal for deer hunting in many states due to bullet diameter regulations, the round is no slouch. An AR is capable of a lot, and while yours is clearly a different pattern, it does broadly resemble America's Rifle in general. I know people with precision models who can reach out 400-500 yards with better accuracy than one might expect.

Indeed, it's a pretty good all-round calibre I think, although, as you say for deer maybe not the right thing. I'd not use it for deer. Here, for sambar, it's 30 Cal as a minimum anyway.

This WFA1 is straight-pull bolt action, not semi, which makes it generally legal here without jumping through any hoops as one needs to for a semi-auto rifle. I like it and have competed with it to good effect and result. I have an Atlas bipod mounted and have reached (accurately) the 400-500m you mention. Of course, the projectile is basically giving the target a bit of a love tap at that range, not enough energy is imparted to make me feel comfortable shooting at live targets at that range.

I think 6.5mm is a common cutoff due to the wide range of WW1/WW2 military surplus rifles and precision civilian rounds in that caliber range.

Inside 100 yards, I could definitely see using .223/5.56 for deer, especially with a JHP or soft point bullet.

The stalk and challenge getting close is always a thrill. I used to archery hunt a bit just for that reason, the rifle hunting had gotten boring for me. Having to get within 20-50 yards of a wild deer, pig, or coyote without being detected was much more challenging.
That's PCP air rifle range now though! The high power .25, .30 or .35 caliber could all be effective out to 150 yards (137 meters) for most folks, and certainly to 200 yards (182 meters) for your talents with the right setup. I haven't seen many folks using them for roos yet, but certainly capable.

Lol, your list sounds like mine! I've been spending far too much time on other PCP review pages and my own testing. A couple tidbits for you...
The sweet spot for distance and power seems to be the .25 and .30 caliber. These are also the quietest when suppressed (yes, it's worth the hassle). The quarry would barely hear them at that distance (if at all). The .35 caliber gives more power obviously, but seems to start opening up and losing accuracy past 100-150 yards and further. The pellet is short and fat, with poor BC. Most folks shooting beyond 100-150 yards for any caliber are going to the newer slugs instead of pellets. They are much more aerodynamic with better BC so they stabilize better, and cut through wind better. I've just ordered some up to do some testing with and you know I'll be posting results!

Handling a gun is an art and more so, hunting Kangaroos... It takes patience, determination and craftiness. This is one lovely gun you have there sir. No wonder they said guns don't kill but dads with pretty girls do 🤣🤣😂 (totally unrelated just felt like chipping in so I can sound like I know a few things about a gun I've never handled before 🙈🙈) don't judge me 😂😂🤣🤣.

Well this depends on the situation I guess. In war, hurting people with shooting is expected. My post was about culling though, feral animals, not people.
![](https://i.imgur.com/XsrNmcl.png)

Hmm, we have about 80 million of them at best guess, maybe more.

They damage farm land, fences, bed down in crops, eat feed, drink water etc. So, some are culled. It's more about shooting a few which makes the others bugger off for a while. It's a constant thing. Without *tags* provided by the government it is illegal to remove them from the property they are shot upon. I take the deer, not the roos.

And I became worried, when I heard that you need to shoot out to around 50 meters (54.68 yards) in the hunter exam in my country (Hungary).

350 meters (382 yards) sounds like sniping to me. Haha. 😂

> There's an exam to be a hunter in Hungary?

Yes. And there is a mandatory course (study) to it. And it is very strict and very expensive. And unfortunately if you would like to become a falconer, then you have to take both of these, because according to the local law, falconry is a form of hunting, and the falconer exam is an extension of the hunting exam. Nowadays all of this costs around 300 000 Hungarian Forint (HUF), which is currently $868.99 USD, because $1 USD is currently 345.23 Hungarian Forint (HUF). And only if your exams are successful at the first tries. Locally this is very expensive and this looks like a kind of luxury, because many people are earning much less money per month.

> What accuracy do you need to maintain at that range, and what rifle is used?

The hunter exam in my country (in Hungary) is currently using two types of guns, and you have to use both of them on the exam.

With a shotgun:

> At 50 m, 21 rounds must be completed in 3 evaluated shots at the 50 m pistol target, after 1 test shot, in accordance with the rules of the International Sport Shooting Association.

With a rifle:

> The candidate shoots 15 pucks, and must score at least 6 hits.

There are no specific types of guns, and the candidate have to choose the correct caliber of the ammo for the given gun (from three different types of calibers).
