About three weeks ago I wrote a post about sending my lovely and most excellent seven year old niece a set of Peter Alexander pyjamas as a gift for Australia Day. 

She lives in Finland, a very long way from Australia, and I wanted to involve her in the national day. Along with the gift I sent some Australia flag branded things and a kangaroo soft toy. On Australia Day I received a video from my brother @tarazkp showing the unboxing and her face was priceless, so cute, and made me miss her so much. I'd give anything to have a chance to hug her right now...anyway, I was really happy until...*I saw a look my brother gave to his wife (who was videoing) and I thought something was wrong...*

As it turns out there was definitely something wrong, the fucken store had left the security tag on the items joining them together so they were unwearable. *Fucking fuckety fucken fuckballs!*

This wouldn't be an issue if they were here but they are not and I could hardly expect them to send it back to me so I could have the store remove the security tags and then send it back again. Some could argue that I should have checked but I'd picked up a gift boxed item off a shelf and wouldn't have expect the contents to tagged - It's bonkers.

We spoke on the phone and he said he would try and remove the tag without causing damage which is what he was able to do (he's like a brownish version of fucken MacGyver!)...I got a lovely set of photos of her modelling the items and I felt better about it...but I wasn't leaving it there. 

I went to the store and spoke to the manager, calmly, explaining the situation and owning up to the fact I'd not kept the receipt - who would I guess, the item was sent to Finland for fuck sake - and I took along the VISA card statement with the store and purchase noted along with the postage receipt for the $45 it cost to send away as proof. I also had the video footage of the unboxing in case I needed it.

We chatted and she said she'd had the same thing happen previously with the same item, the only difference being the other people could bring the item back in to have the tag removed. 

Apparently over the Christmas period they'd employed a heap of *shitty young Christmas casual workers* who were rather useless. They'd been folding and packing (into the gift boxes) the clothing items without taking the security tags off then putting them right on the shelves. Clueless fuckers. I asked what may be able to be done and to my surprise she said she'd give me a new gift boxed set (which she checked for security tags) and also refund the (not insignificant) purchase price of the other set which would cover the cost of both sets of postage. It was a good result.

I was going to select a different colour but decided to get the same only a size up, eight instead of six, so my niece would be able to use the ones she had and then grow into the new set. She's going to be a tiny little thing so she's likely to be able to use them for years to come. 

The first and third images in this post are of the gift boxed size eight item I was given and I'll be sending it in the near future. I'm going to get a slightly larger set also and send with the smaller because my sister in-law loved the pyjamas set I'd sent for my niece so I figure I might as well send two in the same box to save postage - her birthday isn't too far off. It was a reasonable result and could have been much worse - it's instilled a little confidence in me that there's people who are happy to do the right thing in a world full of people who are not.

I was very disappointed my gift didn't work out to plan and it sort of ruined Australia Day for me to some degree; I want my nice to be happy, to feel engaged with me, and the setback of the security tag didn't help. My niece took it in her stride although was sad she couldn't try them on, she loved everything I sent though, played with them and all, and the look on her beautiful little face when she opened the gift will stay with me - so not a total loss. Fortunately my brother got the tag off without causing very much damage, just a little. The good thing is she'll get another set and she'll get to enjoy both gifts for a long time to come.

I had a similar thing happened to me last 2022 Christmas season. I went to a store to buy some Christmas gifts, some bags for my two sisters, toys for my nieces and nephews and some clothes for my brothers. They were quite a lot. Then as ai checked out of the store, oh man! The security alarm kept ringing when I pass by it. The people in the store thought I snatched or stole something..... You know they were not talking but you can see from their faces.... Haha.
I felt so embarrassed and was not happy with it. Good thing one of the staff who assisted me came to my aid and we went on checking the items. To my surprise inside the bag, the cashier was not able to remove the security tags that's why the alarm went off..... In a loud voice, you know for other shoppers to hear.... I told them you should check them properly because people here thinks I am a snatcher or probably a kleptomaniac of some kind!!!

Well, the supervisor apologized saying that the cashier was just a trainee hired for the Christmas season and there were a lot of shoppers too, she was tired because she has no bagger and it was past lunch time she hasn't taken her lunch break yet..... 
Well, I am empathetic so I understand it was just a very uncomfortable experience though. Haha.

Yes, I know that sort of thing happens...I guess they get these casual workers and don't spend much time training them and mistakes happen. Fortunately you got it sorted out and it didn't cost you anything. It's good that you were understanding of the situation also.

I think both brothers are MacGyver, that's for sure. That's why they are brothers...

I'm glad that the issue was solved and that the shop gave something positive, because that's not always the case.

I remember once I bought something for the home, it was an oil cruet, a very nice container to put olive oil in. But internally it was faulty and the shop did not want to recognise the fault or change it, simply because the ticket they gave was not valid for returns, a very strange thing. Some time later I went back to the shop and it seems that there had been many complaints, so they changed the ticket. 

The solution was to fix the product at home and that was it.

It's quite disconcerting when one pays for something that is faulty and the store won't refund it. There's consumer laws here but stores often find a way around them. 

At least you got the item fixed, I hope it gave many years of service.

It is disappointing when they don't take care of the problem and don't respect consumer law. Yes, I am still using the product and it works fine, but they should have fixed it for me...

This past Christmas we got a blanket to get to one of our nieces only to find the security tag was still on it. Luckily I have a good number of tools and I was able to get it cut off without damaging the blanket. It was quite the mess though. We didn't realize it until we were just about to meet them, so I had maybe then minutes to get it off!

They are removable, but I think damage is often the result of an attempt, the whole point of security tags I guess. On a blanket it's probably more forgiving than on a pair of satin PJ's. Lesson learned though, don't trust people, *they're numpty's.* 😆

When I was doing my research it appears you can use a really powerful magnet to beat the tags. Unfortunately the ones I had at my house were not strong enough.  I think the time factor is what really gets you. They are definitely removeable, but if you are in the middle of a store trying to get it off to not have the alarm go off you just don't have the time or ability to not be obvious what you are doing.

As I was reading that, I remembered a similar situation I had many years ago. I bought my mom some clothes and I didn't notice the tag, when I realized, I went back to the store, but when I got there they had taken away the equipment to remove it, there was no way to take it off in the store, I had to leave it for a few days for them to remove it, I couldn't leave it because I had to deliver the gift in two days, I had to go to a store far away from where I live, a whole day for a simple tag to be removed. I need some skills like Taraz's, it would have saved me so much trouble.

It's inconvenient and all because someone didn't do their job...either the worker or the person who trained the worker. Customer service is getting so bad and is only getting worse.

I was reading (because in my country it is the standard) and at Christmas time and New Year's Eve, these things are common, it is a pity and if I were the owner of a retail business what I would do would be to pay attention to these details, because I am sure that it is difficult for you to return to that store, so there must be other customers.

And yes, customer service is getting worse and worse, when it should be the other way around because everything advances to the digital, providing good service will be an important differentiator but while we continue to suffer the customers

Poor little thing in the short term, these are pretty and I would have wanted to try them on right away too if I was her. Luckily you got the situation resolved and there are people with hearts left in humans...Good to know. She's lucky to have an uncle that tries hard to keep her a princess. I used to work retail and it sometimes happened with instore purchases like 20 years ago. even the back then archaic systems, as a manager, I had access to a database of all purchases made from the brand across all it's stores to be able to track these mishaps and deal with them appropriately, a happy well treated customer comes back time and time again especially when dealt with in reasonable way. I would imagine, in 2024, keeping track in computers has probably gotten better. Like you said, it depends how willing is one to actually take their job and costumers seriously and fairly rather than meet them with complacency.  Thanks for sharing your experience! xox

If she lived here I'd get a set of these PJ's and we'd have pyjama parties together. (Ok, I'm not sure I'd wear *these PJ's*, but you know what I mean. 

The ACCC (Consumer watchdog here in AU) have l was around refunds and returns and they are stringently managed; one of them is that a receipt must be produced for a refund, although the store can override that as they did in my case. So many stores default to that as a means to get out of refunds despite their being compelling evidence the item was bought there, is still packaged and in saleable condition. Typical huh?

You can probably find something in blue and more adult size too someplace else, you would look glamorous! hehe

My point was, here in Canada, all the receipts are stored in the store's database and a duplicate can be re-printed if the store tries a little. A receipt has to be produced here too. 
we also have strong consumer protections that stores have to adhere to that many don't if the customer don't hold their feet to the fire, not only around refunds but also around pricing mistakes/misprints they will also try to cover up or get out of once at the till.

Ok. Everything was a disaster. Everything got resolved in the best way, but the question I asked myself when reading was: wasn't there a store where they could take the pajamas to have the tag removed without causing any damage with whatever they use for that?

(I think they take the problems and needs of their customers seriously by giving you a solution like that... that way they ensure that you'll go and buy more or recommend them 🤔... hmm, reasonable.)

I guess it started bad, but got better in the end. They were able to get the security tag off, and you got another one. I do think that good or upscale stores are very generous when it comes to things like these. They care a lot about their image and publicity. I've encountered problems in cheaper stores as well, and they usually just replace or give a missing item, but never giving more than necessary because of their mistake.

They certainly charge a lot at that store however in these economic times most are trying to cost cut. As part of Consumer Law here, a store is not obligated to refund a purchase without a tax invoice as proof of purchase - Many hide behind that law when it comes to refunds.

And as for the Christmas casuals, if they weren't trained properly that's on whoever put them on that job, if they were and just didn't then they definitely did a bad job x_x

You know there's quite a lot of decent people around right, they just tend to be scattered so that concentrations of egotistic self centredness can be diluted a bit XD
