<div class="text-justify"> <center></center> *** *** I received an invitation for an event today and as usual reluctance to accept was my first thought. It's not that I'm anti-social folks, more that I really value my time and who I spend it with so a random group of people, some of which I don't know, didn't fill me with a lot of enthusiasm. On this occasion there was additional motivation to decline however as the event is being held at an ice-skating rink and it's expected that attendee's ice skate. It's supposed to be fun you see. <sub>***<a href="https://pixabay.com/photos/switzerland-winter-snow-ice-frozen-1982423/">original im src</a>***</sub> I've not declined yet, I thought I'd give it a good think before I did, but I have to say that I'm not likely to accept for a couple of reasons with the most relevant excuse being that I'm terrible at ice-skating...Well, maybe not terrible, just not so good at all the required elements. The main problem with my ice-skating prowess is that that don't have the ability to stop - like, not even a little bit - and that often means carnage ensues. This is not so bad for me because I'm resilient, strong, and robust...But when I barrel into a group of small children congregating on the ice at something approaching warp-speed...That's when things become problematic. That's right, you read correctly, warp-speed! That's the one aspect of ice-skating I have mastered but whilst, in all probability I'm the fastest ice-skater on the face of the planet, having the ability to arrest my forward motion in a timely fashion is not something I've mastered, or even come to be passingly good at, or can even slightly do at all. I've generally relied on a different strategy to stop my forward progress mainly based around using things that may be around me to slow me to a stop: People and walls primarily. This ice-skating event, whilst a perfect opportunity to impose my speed-dominance upon the poor unfortunates around me who cannot gain the lightning-fast speeds I am capable of, is simply a disaster waiting to happen. It is a corporate event in support of a local children's charity and sounds quite amazing indeed. It's being catered for by one of the city's premiere catering companies and will raise funds and awareness for a very worthy cause. The main problem is there'll be many notable personalities in attendance plus a bunch of underprivileged and sick kids and...Well, considering my ice-skating speed-capabilities and lack of stopping ability someone is likely to be seriously injured, probably many people, and I'll be the cause of it. I don't want that on my conscience. Imagine the G-dog, that's me folks, in my super-tight spandex/lycra ice-skating suit complete with hood for better aerodynamics, zipping around the rink at world land-speed record velocities. Naturally one only sees a flash of colour due to the speed, although the suit allows one to make out all the important details on my body still; it's tight AF and you'd not want to miss the details, trust me. So, there I am zipping around in glorious fashion until...Time for food! That's when things begin to come undone because I must bring myself to a stop to partake of the tasty morsels on offer. It's at this point I'd look for a means to stop and that often means a wall or a group of kids to land on, preferably not the wall. I try to find a group of them as one doesn't quite break my fall effectively enough. I'd not want to hurt myself after all; I line them up and, boom! Stopped. Do you see the problem? Now, you might be wondering why I'd not spare the kids by using adults instead...I did this once actually. The problem is adults are often a little more attentive and can see what it is happening...On that one occasion they all moved at the last moment, and I slammed into the wall of the rink. Sure, it stopped me, but I sustained some damage which I really didn't appreciate. I learned my lesson that day and now just tend to careen into a bunch of unsuspecting kids which prevents me from sustaining any injuries perfectly. The same can't be said for them however - it never goes well for those poor little tackers. Anyway, I'm thinking it might be best to avoid the event and do my bit for those underprivileged and sick kids by not injuring them and causing extended hospital stays over the Christmas period; I know, so kind huh? I contemplated attending and using only one unfortunate little bugger to provide the stopping force and required cushioning but I'm feeling charitable, so I think I'll skip it. What do you think? I love skating! But yeah, only this season did I learn to stop without going into a spin and/or hitting something. Try putting yourself into a spin, converts the forward momentum and all. I have run into a kid once. ONCE. well, I ended up with an armful of kid and kept going. Kid was fine. Just a surprise hug from a random stranger, lol. But yeah, I yell “I can’t stop” or similar when people are in my way. I stay close to the edge of rinks but if someone cuts into my path they’re getting told to leave my path now! It’s very altruistic of you not to want to run into other people. But consider going and just sticking to the Hold-The-Barrier zone? Or you know, don’t actually skate and just hang out with the parents who I’m sure mostly are not gonna be skating? At least where I go, often the kids are on the ice and the adults just stand there and watch - on or off ice. I’m not sure if your corporate event will allow kids, but well…standing is a fine art indeed. Either way, best of luck!

Unfortunately I don't know how to ice skate at all...I never tried because of the fear of getting hurt. Falling on ice looks painful when I watch others go through it. And possibly hitting someone because I would not know how to properly skate...yup...I can understand your point of view and it totally makes sense. It is nice that it is for a charity cause though

Wow, the first line of your post completely describes me: I also value my time and do not like big and noisy companies of people. It is winter now and this is a great ice skating opportunity. We have few outdoor ice skating rinks, but we do have an ice rink. A lot of people gather in the indoor skating area, but children especially try to show their "non-existent" skills. Lol, yes one my age should never risk personal injury and besides, kids are far more resilient right? They'll bounce back. I like the hay bale stopping technique although...I wonder if one of those areas full of coloured balls might be more fun? I mean, it is well known that a group of small children are the best method as they provide stopping power and cushioning as well but the hay bale/coloured ball-pit could also be viable. I think those colorful balls may be deceiving. One time many years back, I had two of my young nephews out for a day and we went to a fast food place for lunch. They had a huge area full of those happily colorful balls for the kids to play in. They did have some restrictions though, about age and size and one of my nephews was a little above that age and size, so being a good boy, he did not try to go in, but admitted he'd really love to try them. Before it was time to leave, we were the only ones left and I told him that since no one else was there, he should go in and try them and he did ! He played in them a while and seemed to enjoy it, but admitted when it was done that falling around in them was not really as soft of a landing as it appeared. He said those plastic balls were quite hard ! Who knew ???

Lmao 🤣 If you're in an arena maybe you need to hug the boards a bit, lean in a ride the curve to let frition slow you down. Renting skates can be an issue as well for new skaters. Rental skates tend to be super dull. I'm a good skater, I played hockey for many years, and I often have a really hard time when using rentals - in stopping and turning. They keep them on the duller side so that people don't tear up the ice. P.s. I don't want to picture you in lycra spandex 😂

It boggles my brain, being as I'm a Canadian and what Canadian doesn't skate? My mind went to one solution and one solution only....you need a bear skating buddy, like that black bear that was coming towards you. I've heard the Canadanadians are good skaters...And if they're not the always say *sorry.* 🤔 Now, you've struck upon a very legit and logical *ice-skating-stop/cushioning-system* here. I mean, me and giant man-eating black bears always tend to get along well and it's well known I'm the world's best hugger so...It makes sense right? I'll be toasty warm and have the ability to stop as well. Seems totally legit. Also, how is it I am an ice-skating malfunctionary? (Yes that's a word). Well, the last time we saw ice in Australia was in the last ice age. It melted after about twenty minutes though so yeah, I didn't get much chance to practice on that occasion - just learned how to go fast.
