Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking. **- Marcus Aurelius**

I love history, and looking backward in time; learning from those who have come before me provides great insight into my own life, offers different perspectives and the opportunity to think and act a little differently. One such person is Marcus Aurelius [Roman emperor 161 to 180 AD] so here is a series on some of his words. ***image source*** *** *** #
Marcus Aurelius says...

🔘 🔘 🔘
####
*Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.*
I was given a reasonable upbringing; we didn't have a lot due to financial shortcomings, but we had what was required and, considering I knew no different I grew up happy. We all went without a lot and many of the things I did have were second hand, not just handed down to me but *purchased second hand,* including Christmas and birthday presents, toys, books and clothing, but it didn't seem to matter and, if I'm honest, I never really thought about it much as a kid. Looking back on my childhood now, I can see moments in which my parents struggled very much financially and went without things for their children, and I remember hearing them talk about finding money for food, school fees and various other life-requirements - they thought I was asleep and I wish I was because it made me sad for them - but in general, my childhood was a happy one and I believe I was raised as well as my parents could and knew how. Manners, patience, courtesy, honour, integrity, kindness, generosity, ownership, responsibility, consistency and many other things were instilled in me, all of which I built on, added to and developed upon over the years. The hardships the family faced punctuated them, drove them home and *burned them into my brain and being* as my dad was so fond of saying...and along with them came a strong mindset and character, the ability to think independently and for myself, to know right from wrong, appreciate what I had and to understand how to maintain the right attitude. Sure, that didn't all happen when I was a kid, but the grounding was there and as an adult the experiences I had, together with that grounding, helped me along in life. Looking at my adult life, I have to say I've had a good one. There's been some dark parts but the opposite also, and it's been an overall happy life. Over the course of my life I've had many struggles, financially, emotionally, and physically with some of them having very negative and harmful effects upon me but here I am, still going and happy enough; I think many people could say the same. I was thinking about this the other day, and about what it is that allows us to to say, *I'm happy*, despite all the things that happen to us and in our lives. I went flicking through my book of quotes, a notebook I've had for twenty five years in which I've handwritten quotes I've come across that mean something, are interesting or that I know I'll want to refer back to, and I found this one. It's simple, even seems like stating the obvious, but if asked by someone, *what is needed to make a life happy*, and I responded with *it's within you and your way of thinking,* I think a lot of people would be dissatisfied with my answer. The quote basically says that happiness is a mindset, an attitude, and that we have the ability to effect how we feel by having the right thoughts and attitudes; The right thoughts and attitudes will cause us to take better actions which circles back to increase happiness. It's all so simple...to say...not so simple to apply...But *didn't I do this when I was a kid?* Well yeah, I did...so I know it's possible and, luckily for me, I've been doing it all my life. I understand that physical things are required in life, that we have to buy things and some of them bring a degree of happiness, but I firmly believe that true happiness comes from within, and if it doesn't originate there, no amount of material items are going to fill the void. *** I'd like to know your thoughts on happiness. I don't mean about how happy you were when you got the latest iPhone or some such thing though, I mean life-happiness. What has made you deeply and sustainably happy in your life, how have you maintained it and what challenges have you faced whilst pursuing happiness? Alternatively, if you're not happy overall, what do you think you could do to rectify the situation? Feel free to comment below.
🔘 🔘 🔘

*** Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default, tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind - galenkp

Do you have any thoughts about making your blogs into a book? You really have good reflections and teachings here. Anyways, I am happy because I love and enjoy doing my roles and reaponsibilities, and I have conquered the worst times in my life. 😊 And I would be happier if my dreams will come true.

> Do you have any thoughts about making your blogs into a book? Hmm no not really. I've mentored people (still do) and they write stuff down, but my mentoring is more fluid, conversational, and I think the written word can sometimes be a little inflexible; it's written in black and white and that's that. I like to adapt my words, use different ones, for different situations. Besides, there's a million of books that say this stuff, I don't think we need another one. It's good to hear you're happy.

You have good timing, I just finished playing one of my favorite old video games, Rome: Total War. Pretty sure you'd like it if for no other reason than all the loading screens have a fun quote each time. [Happiness is a warm gun.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdvnOH060Qg) Couldn't not lead with that :) For me happiness is the state that exists in the absence of anything bad happening. If nothing is actively going wrong I'm happy. Then there's euphoria, which seems to come with doing things well, adrenaline, or dopamine. It's a slightly different critter though.

I like what you say...*the absence of something bad occurring.* That's contentment with oneself and life in general I think. It doesn't mean more isn't desired and sought, just that simple happiness is enough, and acceptable state of being. I'm not much of a gamer, but anything with *total war* in the title is fair game. Lol.

My childhood is much similar to yours or perhaps even worse. My parents were always struggling in providing our basic necessities, big time financially short but that hardship didn't stop us from dreaming. I can't even remember blaming my parents for being poor. That hardship actually prepared us and mold us to be strong. It just depend on how we look at life. We standardized life. We thought having collection of cars, having a big house, branded stuff and all sort of that is the source of happiness. Hey! There are many RICH BUT UNHAPPY people out there end up killing themselves or taking drugs...and so are the poor- Depressed! I strongly believe that contentment is the key to real happiness. Happiness spring from within. It start from changing your mind, the old pattern of thinking. Start counting your blessings. focus on what you have and not on what you don't have that others have. Stop comparing yourselves to others and just focus on changing/ bettering your life. In life, there's only one you compete; yourself. Just compete yourself.

I like the application of contentment in life. It doesn't mean one can't strive for a little more physically or emotionally, just that one is likely to be more settled with what they have and where they are in life and may then enjoy it a little more rather than constantly chasing other things. Seeking a better life, better versions of oneself, is a good thing though of course, but I don't believe doing it at the expense of ones happiness is a good thing.

Life - happiness indeed does have less connection to material things and its real source is from within. When I was a teenager, I heard that a celebrity committed suicide and I was like why would someone who has money and fame end their life? They should be the happiest person in the world but unfortunately, things don't work out that way. My childhood had a twist, it started all beautifully until I was five. Things went from good to really bad and just with my mom taking responsibility, we became homeless in a twinkle of an eye but despite everything I and my sibling was happy. We barely had three square meals and as we grew, we were always positive about becoming great to turn our situation around. This happiness was built on hope, family, contentment, love and a proper mindset. Despite lacking, mom ensured we were taught the importance of these things and today, I still invest in these things because it helps me maintain a high level of happiness even though I still do not have it all. A lot of things have changed between now and then, and even though I still have numerous challenges, somehow I still find myself happy to a reasonable extent.

Indeed, money and things don't always make a person happy, but many who don't have things and money often believe it to be so. Many suffer great adversity and still manage to have happy lives overall...it's that attitude and mindset thing again. I like to see it, as in your case for instance, as it shows strength of mind and character.

It is true that people think lacking material things is what's keeping them from being happy but the reality of it shows itself when they eventually have it all and still couldn't make themselves happy. Moreover, happiness built on material things is live building a sand castle at the edge of the seas. The water moves beyond it stops, it washes away everything; when the material things are gone then happiness vanishes. Finding that true state of happiness is the only way to keep ourselves happy even during challenging times.

Many things have happened to achieve my full happiness I think that after I came out of the darkness of cancer I appreciate even that process because it has led me to the light of things, and I am still learning, it is the magic to turn the simple things of life into delicious events and I wish that everything adds up the rest of the days that I have left to live. That's why every space I win in favor of "creating this culture of happiness" is a space to celebrate".

Happiness is always a choice. Most people thought that we can get it from having a lot of money, having what we want but sometimes the real happiness is not just all about that. Though money is sometimes an instrument to make someone happy but contentment and being grateful for the things that you have will give you a real happiness.

Well, happiness comes from the heart. For you to know that you have real happiness, its when you find yourself in trouble but still have peace inside you. What always makes me happy is when i have money either by cash or bank. It comes to a time when i don't have any cash, even someone communicates to me, my mind won't be there.

Happiness for me, is a state. Happiness can come from gratitude, a surprise, a result, an inner state of peace. It can come from emotions and from habits as well. Meditating ins something powerful that can trigger happiness. So, happiness is a conscious state of being, detached from Ego and individualism.

In my thoughts, happiness is a joyous state where we feel lighter, brighter we smile more easily than usual and we feel many burdens to be lighter and more easily addressable.

The majority of people would definitely be dissatisfied with the answer, "It's within you." If I asked myself, "What is needed to make me happy?" at this point in my life, I wouldn't say to myself that "it's within me," if I am being honest. And I think it's because I have been clouded by a lot of challenges and difficulties that are making me blind to the fact that I have one salient reason to be happy. I didn't grow up with the things I wanted, but looking back, I see that I grew up with all that I needed: a loving family, food on my table (often times), consistent shelter, and, very importantly, a good upbringing. I am proud to know that I have been taught well enough to be modest, thoughtful, and built with character. One has to see past their difficulties and hold a content mindset to feel the positivity in their lives. I am reminded of this today.

Yep, exactly...people would be a little sceptical...but, *attitude*, is within a person and it's attitude (and thoughts) that make everything else happen. You mention *mindset*, and yep, that too.

I believe that the foundations are made in childhood; education and above all the example we receive from our parents can form and direct us in an important way. I am not a materialistic person and I can say that I had a happy childhood; for this reason I consider myself really lucky and I am lucky to have two parents who have always taught me important values... as a teenager I may have done the opposite of what they said by contract but as I grew up I began to understand what they wanted to teach me and today many their values are also mine and my family's. My moment of happiness right now is at home with Reny and our pets, no matter what we do, whether we're doing some gardening or relaxing on the sofa when I'm together with my family in our beloved home I'm happy and serene. They are also when we are all together elsewhere, but this house that we have built with difficulty is our castle, our fortress so we are fond of it. The biggest challenge is the definitive achievement of financial freedom to no longer have to commit my time to anything other than my family; obviously this challenge is linked to my loved ones because the goal is to be able to allow them a peaceful life, without wasting money but without too many worries.

I like what your definition of happiness is and I think a lot of people have lost that simplistic happiness that was once so popular. People seem to crave things and entertainment and they equate that with happiness but I don't believe that's true happiness which, I believe, can be experienced without all the stuff and external entertainments. Most people don't stop to appreciate the simple things about life, or what they have around them. I mean generally, not everyone. It seems that you do though.

Well I grew up in a certain way and I learned to appreciate certain things... for me happiness is spending a night in a tent in a beautiful wood, warming up by the fire and looking at the stars. These are the things I love to do and that make me happy, I believe that simplicity is one of the secrets of happiness.

When I was a child, my family and I also struggled financially. It's not easy, even when you're little, to realize how worried a mom or dad is about providing for the family. So I understand when you say that it made you sad @galenkp I do believe that happiness starts in our minds. I have met people in difficult circumstances and yet they have an incredible attitude 😃 In my case, I am happy on many occasions. But sometimes I get a little deflated 🙈 That's why I think I have to pay more attention to the attitude and not to the circumstances themselves 🌟

We all have those times when we don't feel happy, or *deflated*, as you say; it's human I think. You say that you need to *pay more attention to your attitude not the circumstances.* Do you have a strategy to make this happen?

Yes, it is human 😃 @galenkp When those moments want to come and stay 😅 I have practiced several things: elaborate something I like, visit my family, eat sweet 🙈, listen to music (the kind that cheers 💃) and / or change tune. Like when a song starts that I don't like and I change it for another one that I do 😸 I quite liked the idea you have of a notebook in which you write thought provoking quotes.

My personal take on life-happiness is that the lesser we need, the easier it is to be happy. I do think it takes a lot of conviction to stay true to that given the societal pressure where people are always making comparisons. I was reading a post the other day about a person who retired after becoming financially independent in his 40s, but at gatherings, when asked what his occupation was which he replied he was retired, he felt that he was being judged and people assumed that he was unemployed/couldn't find a job and just used "retired" as a shield to make himself look better. Oh well.

People are judgemental and I think that's one reason that so many people chase things, material things, to help *raise themselves up* in other people's judgement. It's not a good thing. It's the same situation as you described only that's an an emotional aspect. It's sad people feel the need to do it because someone else's perspective doesn't really affect us, and neither can we change it usually. People are quick to judge others, but slow to judge themselves, determine where to improve and actually do it.

There's another old quote that says "don't have what you want; want what you have." It's very similar in nature. I'd like to get to that point. "Happiness" is something that is not terribly easy to define, and probably means something different to many different people. I'm not going to be all negative and whiney on your post, but I'm personally not sure I've ever been *happy* for more than a few fleeting moments in time. Content, perhaps. Accepting. I'm just not sure what happy means to me to know if I've reached it. Now, I've definitely reached moments of peace. Maybe that's the answer I'm looking for. And, since I have the ability to find those moments, maybe that'll be *happy* for me. I'll need to dwell on that.

It's true that many people neglect what they already have in preference to chasing what they (think) they want and I think that brings a certain amount of unhappiness through always pining for something, and then only being momentarily happy with it when they get it...and then shifting focus to more of what they don't have. Content or at peace, I think they qualify. Someone else commented that his *happy* is any time things are not going bad which is, I guess, contentment. Also, I don't relate contentedness with complacency or lack of drive for better, just that a person is settled and appreciative of the life they have created. At peace with it.
