The video chats and exchanged images are just not enough; he's a legit little dude and I miss him so much. He doesn't know I'm coming, his dad, [my brother], has kept it a secret just in case the pandemic prevents my trip in which case, should he expect me to be there, he'd be *devo* (devastated in Australian slang.) I'm not expecting such pandemic nutbaggery but apparently parents do this all the time, *lie and mislead their kids.* I can see the merit of such deception. I'm not the uncle to arrive empty handed, I am way cooler than that folks! So I went shopping. Ok, that sounds normal, but I'm venturing into brave new areas of gift-giving on this occasion and I'm excited...also a little sad. <center></center> My nephew loves trucks, cars, earth-moving equipment and the like; typical boy...although my niece @smallsteps likes the same. Both also love Lego [runs in the family] and when the the former combines with Lego? It's *lose one's fucken mind* time. [Yeah I know, I fucken swear a bit.] 😏 Anyway, my nephew, *on every video chat* says, *"uncle Galen, can I see your Lego."* I oblige showing him some of the built sets I have...knowing it'll not end there. *"Uncle Galen, can I see the Lego in the cupboard,"* always comes next. I make a show of opening it up, trying to find the Lego he refers to and showing him one by one enjoying the wonder and pleasure on his face each time he sees the same things he saw last week. He's so cute and expressive and I really get a kick out of it despite knowing he covets my Lego with every fibre of his being. When I went shopping for him I picked up the obligatory t-shirts, all of which are adorned with trucks, earth-moving equipment or the word TONKA which send that little kid (even more) bonkers! I got some shorts and other clothing but also wanted to get something to challenge him a little so picked up a little self-propelled robot-car thing that he'll have to build. Because he thinks stickers are the fifth best thing in the entire world, I bought some sticker books also: Monster bikes, sea creatures, dinosaurs, trucks and ninjas! I bought no Lego as I had a really cool idea instead. I decided I'd take some of my own Lego, unopened of course, some of the very same sets my nephew has been coveting for months and months. Cool right? I think he's going to take bonkers to the next level! I'm a bit sad to see them go but they will find a good home. *** Everything I have in life will end up with these two little people, hopefully in the distant future when they're not little and I'm old, not young and virile like I am now. I guess I figured I might as well start now though, and it'll give me a pretty nice feeling to see his face when he opens his gifts and sees the Lego he's been drooling over for months. That’s awesome man, it sounds a lot like my little man! He’s even got those two very sets, the snow groomer was a lot of fun to build with those crazy tracks but his favorite for a while was the skid steer for sure. I’m glad that you have a good relationship with the little one! My suck ass family can’t be bothered but a story for another day. Hopefully the stars align and you can get out there with him! They live in another province or however Australia is divvied up right?

Australia has States, like America does. I live in South Australia and they live in Queensland, right up in the top right corner of it, 4,000km away from my city. Australia is a big place, almost as large as America and so travelling around isn't always easy. I'm flying Friday though, and looking forward to it. Red is my outgoing flights and blue my return.

Wow ! It sounds like it is going to be somewhat like Christmas and you will be Santa Claus ! Children are SO much fun. I'm glad you are finally getting to see him and I hope the trip goes without a hitch. We had Legos growing up, just like everyone else we knew. I don't remember there being so many specific kits, but the general box of Legos was huge, with assorted odd pieces, so what we could make was only limited to our imaginations. I used to have generic piles of Lego as my parents couldn't afford kits. We'd but up containers of the stuff second hand. I still loved it, maybe even more than sets, though. My brother did the same for my nephew and these sets will be the first *actual sets* he gets. I feel pleased that they are coming from me.

Nothing cooler than an uncle who comes bearing gifts. I never had that as a kid so I try to be that way for my nephews. Although mine are mini rascals so toy gifts don't last very long but that temporary joy on their faces and being "the best aunt in the world" even for a day is an amazing feeling.

It's great to hear that an uncle still cares about his nieces and nephews. In my opinion, there are 3 important positions of an uncle for his nephew; *First, the uncle and his care are the pride of the children.* How come? They would tell everyone that his uncle was a good man and came with lots of toys. Their world is a toy nowadays. *Second, uncle is a supporter for his nephew.* Apart from their own parents, children also need support from their parents' siblings. That support is built and grown since they were little, whether through communication, play, or gift giving, they will remember it for the rest of their lives. *Third, Uncle as a role model.* The relationship between parents and siblings will also be seen by children as a role model for them to build their relationship with their siblings in the future. The better the relationship between the parents and their siblings, the better they will treat their siblings. One more thing that is important, Uncle is a substitute for parents if their parents "go" one day.
