Thoughts over coffee: Part Two

Coffee and I are old friends (coffee is older than me of course) and I do a lot of thinking over coffee. With this in mind I decided to start a little concept called *thoughts over coffee* which I'll be doing from time to time.

I don't like laziness or reward it and while I don't have anything against down-time, relaxation, doing nothing and such other legitimate activities being lazy grinds my gears. There's many different forms of laziness including below.

### Laziness - Fear

I know most don't relate laziness to fear however I think many people sometimes don't push through fear out of laziness and I see that as limiting. Saying things like, *I simply can't do that,* means that you won't do that...the first step towards achievement is to start out and by convincing ourselves we cannot do something isn't a productive step.

It's easy to stay safely within a comfort zone and let fear rule the day but it means that people miss out on great achievements and amazing moments.

I have fears, everyone does, and when I feel them I think about those times when I pushed forward through the fear barrier, took control, and the results I gained by doing so. Sure, I failed sometimes, but I always felt good knowing I'd tried, that I'd overcome that initial fear and each time it got easier.

I'm a strong believer in that a person's courage grows with use; this means that by showing a little courage now the next time will be easier and so on. It has been a good way for me to push on through the fear and to build better results.

Hmm I never linked fear to lazyness, but that's a good point... I think you need to have some motivations to fight the fear and exit the comfort zone, like if it's work related, a monetary prize can surely push you

I'd tend to agree. Courage is like a muscle, the more you use it the more it grows. As my father used to tell us ad nauseam...If you gently touch a nettle it will sting you for your pains, but if you grasp it like a man of metal, it as soft as silk remains.
My brother took him literally and tried it once...with predictable results.

There is a lot of truth in what you say about fear and how to confront it.
It is true that we all have fear and it is not always bad because it allows us to be alert.
But, for me it has been bad to be afraid of failure because in some important stages of my life I let fear win over hope and I missed out on things I wanted and I didn't even know if I could achieve them because I didn't try.

And, that happened to me with a woman I didn't fall in love with because I feared she would reject me or with trying a new job because I thought I couldn't or leaving for another country for fear of not meeting expectations.

In the end, it is better to fail in the pursuit of happiness than to stop being happy for fear of failure.
