Hope: a film that didn't give me hope at all

<div class="text-justify">Last week, on a long-awaited visit to my dearest cousin, she convinced me to watch one of those Korean movies she loves so much. She told me the story was sad and heartbreaking, and not your usual boy-girl romance; so I had no choice but to go with the flow and watch the movie with her.

*Hope* opens with Dong-hoon (Sul Kyung-gu) and Mi-hee (Uhm Ji-won), on an ordinary day with their 8-year-old daughter, So-won. As usual, the mother sends off her little girl along with her friend to go on their way to school.  The boy leaves her behind and So-won is left alone as she heads to her school. She never arrived.

The news reports a yellow umbrella found at a construction site, and a girl in a desolate room with grotesque injuries and bruises. She needed emergency surgery, and it's no surprise that both parents are as devastated as their daughter.

*Hope* deals with one of the strongest issues for me: child abuse. Both the emotional and physical consequences that the girl suffers are demonstrated in this film, and how it deeply affects her family. In addition, they must deal with the pressure of the media and the boldness of the reporters to get a testimony even going as far as disrespecting the space the victim needs.

*Hope* was directed by Lee Joon-ik, who has a long journey of films such as *The Book of Fish* (2021) and *Sunset in My Hometown* (2018); and the screenplay written by Ji-hye Kim. This movie was released, in South Korea, in 2013 but it wasn't until 2017 that it was streamed on other platforms, such as Netflix.

I think what hurt me the most about *Hope* was the fact that it was based on a real case, known as *Na-young Case*, which happened around December 2008 and is exactly as the movie tells it: an 8-year-old girl (whose alias was Na-young) was kidnapped and raped on her way to school by Choo Doo Soon, a 57-year-old man who was drunk at the time. She did sustain serious injuries to her internal organs, and was able to survive.

Cho was convicted and the sentence for his crime was merely 12 years. 12 years for physically and emotionally scarring a girl for life. 12 years where the victim will live knowing that her assailant will be released when she's 22 years old. Indeed, by this time, he's already free. 

It came as no surprise that the "resolution" of the case provoked discontent and outrage, not only by the victim's family, but by residents in the area of the aggressor. The film tries to give us hope at the end, but I couldn't feel any worse. This sort of thing really gets to me and I wish I hadn't seen it.</div>

<div class="text-justify">La semana pasada, en una tan esperada visita a mi prima más querida, me convenció para ver una de esas películas coreanas que tanto le gustan. Me dijo que la historia era triste y desgarradora, y no su usual romance entre chico y chica; así que no tuve más opción que dejarme llevar y ver la película con ella.

*Hope* inicia  con Dong-hoon (Sul Kyung-gu) y Mi-hee (Uhm Ji-won), en un día cualquiera con su hija de 8 años, So-won. Como de costumbre, la madre despide a su niña junto con su amigo para que vayan de camino a la escuela.  El niño la deja atrás y So-won se queda sola mientras se dirige a su colegio. Nunca llegó.

Las noticias reportan un paraguas amarillo encontrado en un sitio de construcción, y a una niña en un cuarto desolado y con heridas grotescas y golpes. Necesitó cirugía de urgencias y no es sorpresa que ambos padres estén tan destrozados como su hija.

*Hope* trata uno de los temas más fuertes para mí: el abuso infantil. Las consecuencias tanto emocionales como físicas que sufre la niña son demostradas en esta película, y cómo esto afecta profundamente a su familia. Además, deben lidiar con la presión de los medios y el atrevimiento de los reporteros para conseguir un testimonio llegando, incluso, a irrespetar el espacio que la víctima necesita.

*Hope* fue dirigida por Lee Joon-ik, quien tiene una larga travesía de películas como *The Book of Fish* (2021) y *Sunset in My Hometown* (2018); y el guión escrito por Ji-hye Kim. Esta película fue estrenada, en Corea del Sur, en el 2013 pero no fue hasta el 2017 que fue transmitida en otras plataformas, como Netflix.

Creo que lo que me dolió más de *Hope* fue el hecho de que estaba basada en un caso real, conocido como *Na-young Case*, que sucedió alrededor de diciembre del 2008 y es exacto como lo relata la película: una niña de 8 años (cuyo alias fue Na-young) fue secuestrada y violada en su camino a la escuela por Choo Doo Soon, un hombre de 57 años que se encontraba alcoholizado en el momento. Cho fue apresado y la sentencia de su crimen fueron meramente 12 años. 12 años por dejar marcas físicas y emocionales de por vida a una niña. 12 años donde la víctima vivirá sabiendo que su agresor será liberado cuando ella tenga 22 años. De hecho, para estas fechas, él ya se encuentra libre. 

No fue sorpresa que la "resolución" del caso provocó descontento e indignación, no solo por la familia de la víctima, sino por los residentes que se encuentran de la zona del agresor. La película intenta darnos esperanza al final, pero no podría sentirme peor. Esta clase de cosas me afecta mucho y ojalá no la hubiese visto.</div>

This is quite a touching one, no child actually deserves to go through that kind of pain. . merely thinking of it actually brings me close to tears.

One thing I know about korean movies is their ability to give detail and make it seem as real as real can be, so I can bet that this one was actually really touching..

It scares me now after reading your review because I'll become angry to find out that the one who committed such a crime was let off very easily.. it'll be very painful!!

It's definitely painful! The film is well made and achieves its goal. The sequence of scenes that make us understand that the girl was abused aren't explicit and still have a great impact.

Yo no he visto la película, solo vi un clic musical con las imágenes de fondo y donde contaban más o menos el caso y realmente partió mi alma en dos, porque o más terrible y doloroso de todo es que esta basada en un caso de la vida real y eso es lo más desgarrador, solo de imaginártelo y ni siquiera quieres pensar como lo esta pasando la victima que seguramente nunca encontrara el consuelo para un acto tan terrible.

Yo estoy igual que tu, este tipo de películas e historias me afectan mucho, sobretodo ahora que soy mamá, tu puedes llegar a sentir el dolor tan inmenso que sintieron los padres de esa pobre e inocente niña, que no merecía semejante aberración, la verdad no entiendo la justicia de ese país que no castiga con más severidad a estos criminales que no merecen el perdón de nadie.

Entiendo lo que sentiste al ver esta historia, y por eso es que más que nunca hay que cuidar a nuestros niños, uno nunca sabe donde hay gente que esta mal de la cabeza.

Por eso mismo es que este tipo de películas me pegan, porque comienzo a pensar cómo se siente la víctima, la familia y sobretodo, como a todo eso se le suma el mal manejo del caso y una sentencia injusta. 

No soy madre como tú, pero tienes razón en que hay estar pendiente; hasta un familiar puede ser un abusador.

Sin duda se nota mucho la injusticia en esta historia, creo que es una pelicula con un tema bastante fuerte, pero aun asi creo que mas que justicia, esta cinta trata de mostrar la falta de conciencia por parte de aquellas personas que dicen imponer la ley.

Aun no he visto esta pelicula, pero por lo que muestras, se puede deducir el contexto. Muy buena redaccion, saludos @galistea!

Una de las cosas que me pregunté, luego de terminarla, ¿qué razón tendría alguien para hacer una película de algo tan traumante para la víctima? Y llegué a tu conclusión: para darle visualización a esta clase de injusticias del sistema.

No te imaginas como esta película quebró mi alma en dos y como llore con esta historia y es que ser padre hace que este tipo de películas toquen la fibra más sensible en cualquier ser humano y lo deje tan vulnerable ante una historia como esta.

Dios no entiendo el nivel de crueldad que puede llegar existir en este mundo y como personas tan desgraciadas pueden existir y es donde yo siempre me hago la tonta pregunta de que carajos hace Dios si de verdad es que existe y deja que estas cosas ocurran. No quiero faltar el respeto a cualesquiera religiosos, pero historias como estas y miles de otras mas demuestran la crueldad en este mundo y como la política y sus tontas reglas hacen que personas tan malvadas como la de esta película no reciban el castigo que merecen.

No sabia que era basada en hechos reales lo que me lleno aun mas de tristeza y es que no pude evitar llorar en tantas escenas y una de ellas fue cuando la pequeña niña intentaba decirle a su papa quien era el culpable y ver a su padre quebrarse en llanto eso fue desgarrador. No suelo dejar opiniones en base a la película cuando se trata de un hecho real y menos como estos, pero tengo que aplaudir el trabajo de interpretación de los actores (Sol Kyung-gu) y (Uhm Ji-won) dios como transmitieron todo ese dolor, angustia y la sensación de una fe que moría al pasar los días es algo que es muy difícil de trasmitir en la pantalla y ellos lo han logrado de inicio a fin. 

Me habían recomendado esta película hace tiempo, pero no le había prestado atención y gracias a tu reseña por fin decidí echarle un vistazo el día de hoy. No es par todos ya que de verdad se mete en lo mas profundo de la sensibilidad humana.

De verdad es una película desgarradora, hay muchas escenas que rompieron mi corazón como la que mencionaste. En estos momentos es cuando me pregunto lo mismo que tú: ¿dónde estaba dios ese día?. Lo más frustrante de todo es que quedó libre el hombre que marcó de por vida a una niña. Horrible

Eso es lo peor solo 12 años de prisión por un falló en la ley dónde dicen que si estaba en estado de ebriedad no es culpable del todo.... Coño eso me dió un dolor de cabeza a morir conocer que las leyes tienen fallos enormes y viendo las pruebas al rojo vivo.

Fue una buena recomendación este tipo de historias deben ser contadas aunque duelan en lo más profundo y que el mundo cuide de sus hijos debemos estar muy pendientes de todo este mundo es cruel y no da oportunidad al descuido.
