Since I’ve been seeing a few posts about the witcher getting posted within the past week, I figured this would be the perfect time to discuss the lore behind Geralt’s hair. As the lore behind it involves the transformation for one to become a witcher, we will also be talking about the Trail of Grasses. I also decided to throw in a second hidden lore piece here, talking about The Law of Surprise!

# Geralt's Hair
<br>
Geralt of Rivia, or as he is known to some The Butcher of Blavikien, also has another name. The White Wolf. The reason behind this nickname is simple. It’s because of his hair ( white) and how he is a witcher from the school of the wolf. But how is it that Geralt is the only witcher with white hair?

When I was first introduced to the Witcher universe, I thought that all Witchers had white hair. I thought it was just a staple. This was before I really knew anything about the universe. In fact, it wasn’t until TW3 came out did I start diving into the lore of the world.

In order to explain how Geralt got his hair, we need to delve into something called the Trial of Grasses. These “Trails” are what turns someone into a witcher. It involves changing the very person’s DNA. This allows them to gain the reflexes that most witchers have. Overall . The training to become a witcher offer only two outcomes: death or success. The Trial of Grasses is a painful experience, and only 3 in 10 witcher “apprentices” would survive.

I’ll make another post sometime talking more about this more in depth. 

Geralt, The White Wolf, handled this trial extremely well, so well in fact that other experiments were performed on him. This caused a few things to happen to Geralt. It caused his skin to lose pigmentation and turned his hair white.

But it also increased his “witcher” abilities. It made him stronger and faster than the average witcher. In fact, he even talks about it somewhat in TW3 I believe. There is a scene where he is talking about how he made a bet that he could hit a rat with a fork in a pitch black room. He ended up hitting it, but since it was pitch black, no one else saw.

# The Law of Surprise

How do Witchers get recruits? It’s not like people are lining up to become witchers after all. Do they steal kids like some people think? Or is it something else? Well, depending on your view on it, they do sort of “steal kids”

A witcher can demand many things for their services, but sometimes they don’t know what they want, so they invoke the Law of Surprise. There are many ways this can be worded, and the cost could almost be anything, hence the name, but sometimes it just happens that the cost is the person’s child.

The Law of Surprise is something that is touched upon in the games, after all, Ciri is the outcome of it, but I’ll delve to that in a bit. What most people might remember is that Lambert was actually one of these children.

Lambert’s father was an abusive drunk, and after being saved by a witcher one day, and having no money to pay him, the witcher invoked the law of surprise saying (IIRC) “The first thing that he sees when he gets home will be the Witcher’s payment. Unfortunately for Lambert, the first thing his father saw was him.

I was really disappointed that this isn’t really dived into more in the games, The Law of Surprise is a really interesting topic in the world of the Witcher, in fact without it, Geralt and Ciri might not have met. 

Without going too much into it because it would take up an entire post, Geralt ended up helping Ciri’s mother with a matter of the heart. Pavetta’s soon to be partner asked what he could Geralt for pay For payment and Geralt  invoked the law of surprise saying that “he will take something that he doesn’t know he has yet.” And that is when Pavetta revealed that she was pregnant.

Of course, when Geralt came back around 6 years later to collect the child, Calanthe ( Ciri’s grandmother, and her current caretaker) tried to pull some trickery which ended up with Geralt leaving without her.

However, because the Law of Surprise was invoked, Ciri and Geralt were bound together by destiny. Ciri and Geralt had encountered each other a few times, but it wasn’t until the Fall of Cintra, and when Geralt invoked the Law of Surprise again, did he bring Ciri to Kaer Morhen to train as a witcher.

# Cabello de Geralt


Geralt de Rivia, o como algunos lo conocen El carnicero de Blavikien, también tiene otro nombre. El Lobo Blanco. La razón detrás de este apodo es simple. Es por su cabello (blanco) y como es un brujo de la escuela del lobo. Pero, ¿cómo es que Geralt es el único brujo con el pelo blanco?

Cuando me presentaron por primera vez el universo de Witcher, pensé que todos los Witcher tenían el pelo blanco. Pensé que era solo un básico. Esto fue antes de que realmente supiera algo sobre el universo. De hecho, no fue hasta que salió TW3 que comencé a sumergirme en la tradición del mundo.

Para explicar cómo Geralt obtuvo su cabello, debemos profundizar en algo llamado Trial of Grasses. Estos “Senderos” son los que convierten a alguien en brujo. Se trata de cambiar el ADN de la persona misma. Esto les permite obtener los reflejos que tienen la mayoría de los brujos. General . El entrenamiento para convertirse en brujo ofrece solo dos resultados: la muerte o el éxito. La Prueba de las Hierbas es una experiencia dolorosa, y solo 3 de cada 10 "aprendices" de brujos sobrevivirían.

Geralt, el Lobo Blanco, manejó esta prueba extremadamente bien, tan bien que se le realizaron otros experimentos. Esto hizo que le sucedieran algunas cosas a Geralt. Hizo que su piel perdiera pigmentación y encaneciera su cabello.

Pero también aumentó sus habilidades de "brujo". Lo hizo más fuerte y más rápido que el brujo promedio. De hecho, incluso habla de eso un poco en TW3, creo. Hay una escena en la que habla de cómo hizo un poco para poder golpear a una rata con un tenedor en una habitación a oscuras. Terminó golpeándolo, pero como estaba completamente oscuro, nadie más lo vio.

# La ley de la sorpresa

¿Cómo consiguen reclutas los Witchers? Después de todo, no es que la gente esté haciendo cola para convertirse en brujos. ¿Roban niños como algunas personas piensan? ¿O es otra cosa? Bueno, dependiendo de tu punto de vista, ellos hacen una especie de "robo de niños"

Un brujo puede exigir muchas cosas por sus servicios, pero a veces no sabe lo que quiere, por lo que invoca la Ley de la Sorpresa. Hay muchas maneras en que esto se puede redactar, y el costo podría ser casi cualquier cosa, de ahí el nombre, pero a veces sucede que el costo es el hijo de la persona.

Me decepcionó mucho que esto no se profundice más en los juegos, La Ley de la Sorpresa es un tema realmente interesante en el mundo de The Witcher, de hecho, sin él, Geralt y Ciri podrían no haberse conocido.

Sin extendernos demasiado porque ocuparía todo un post, Geralt acabó ayudando a la madre de Ciri con un asunto del corazón. El futuro socio de Pavetta le preguntó a Geralt qué podía pagar por el pago y Geralt invocó la ley de la sorpresa diciendo que "tomará algo que aún no sabe que tiene". Y fue entonces cuando Pavetta reveló que estaba embarazada.

Por supuesto, cuando Geralt regresó alrededor de 6 años después para recoger a la niña, Calanthe (la abuela de Ciri y su actual cuidadora) intentó hacer algunos trucos que terminaron con Geralt yéndose sin ella.

Sin embargo, debido a que se invocó la Ley de la Sorpresa, Ciri y Geralt estaban unidos por el destino. Ciri y Geralt se habían encontrado varias veces, pero no fue hasta la Caída de Cintra, y cuando Geralt invocó de nuevo la Ley de la Sorpresa, llevó a Ciri a Kaer Morhen para entrenarse como brujo.
