![IMG_9922.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmZuoqqPnp5YRpVEkR8gowe5zQAsFFfu3UxXFsp45GHthS/IMG_9922.jpg)
*"I'm going to take the day off."*
These were the fated words that I muttered to all of my family members and friends last week. I really did need to take a day off, for I have been going hard for weeks now, and I honestly needed to have a touch of a reprieve. By reprieve I meant staying home, only canning one batch of zucchini salsa, and doing all the laundry. Oh and cooking dinner and getting the kids all lined out for the first day of school. You know, resting... ![62110131647__10DAF19C-BB70-40EE-B13E-71E1CB49F68D.JPG](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdpg1YGLVGAwPwvrCZkY5vuHhnqbP5pdH54KDbGAo9UsB/62110131647__10DAF19C-BB70-40EE-B13E-71E1CB49F68D.JPG) Anyway, I shouldn't have said anything, because Labor Day was not a holiday at all. To start with, I am apparently becoming old because I am incapable of sleeping in. Even though I am pretty much a *Walking Dead* extra in appearance at this point, I popped out of bed before seven A.M. My entirely too perky form exited the shower to see that I had a missed call from my dad. *"It's the dustocalypse!"* he shouted into the phone when I returned his call. *"What do you mean?"* I asked, with literally no confusion in my tone because my dad always spouts something random in greeting. *"The wind! It's roaring!"* he emitted like a kerfluffled turkey dancing around a rolled corn offering. I stepped out onto the porch. The air was dead. Like, there wasn't even a flutter of a pine needle happening, and that's when my stomach started getting it's, *"Oh shicaca Kat, you are going to have a day"* feeling. You see, my parents live about an hour north of me, and they were experiencing a massive cold front whipping though their place. We went from 90 plus degrees to 30 degrees overnight. That kind of temperature change equals barometric shenanigans, AKA windy windy time. The breeze finally arrived. Less than an hour later it looked like the sky fairies decided to change their vacuum bags and had one explode. Visibility was horrid, overly dry trees were snapping like twigs, and the power went out. I wasn't too concerned. Usually when an outage happens the power is back on in about four hours and if it isn't we fire up the generator. In fact, I decided to take a seat for a bit and just rest after doing my morning chores. It was then that the texts and phone calls started coming in. *"We'll come help you get out."* one of my dear friends called and said in a worried tone. *"Out of what?"* I replied? *"Kat! Blanchard's on fire!"* It was then, as I sat on my new deck in my overly tired fugue, that I noticed a huge tanker jet fly over my house. My eyes followed the tanker's trajectory and saw a massive plume of smoke to the north of my home. *"Ah,"* I replied, *"I see."* ![IMG_9916.jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmefGeaqU2VVv395D3rBu3hvMKToXmSdAHBRbnaoUT27Gw/IMG_9916.jpg) A couple miles north of my house a fire raged. It was so bad that they had to shut down the highway. The huge gusts and sustained wind from the north were really making things pop, and I saw right away as long as the winds stayed the same that I was okay and proceeded to try to calm all my worrying friends and family. Then, I tried to find about the friends I have who live in the area of the blaze. It was an intense afternoon. ![IMG_9917 (2).jpg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPowjzHTTFji4mprLS6rHSouzvc5oGNcxyvJuqoLUC6Rc/IMG_9917%20(2).jpg)
*Not clouds...*
The madness continued over night as the power outages were widespread, we weren't sure if the first day of school was going to happen, all the gas stations in the area were down, the fire department was desperate for diesel, my pigs went to Pighalla when the butcher showed up bright and early as scheduled the following morning, there was a garden killing through my protective coverings freeze, I went to work and the kids went to school without being properly bathed (YAY), more fires started around us, smoke descended upon our place, volleyball games, your power is on no it's not roulette with the power company, and the list goes on and on. But you know what? Everything is okay here, we are all safe and my home is still standing. The same can't be said for a lot of folks across the country right now, especially all along the west coast. I really feel for people, and after I finish cutting up firewood and canning this morning, I am going to see what I can do for those who had an even more Laborious Labor Day than I did, because this year has really dished it out for sure! Also: I don't think I will ever announce that I am taking a day off again, I am so sorry everybody... ![62112943567__18BAF629-B63F-45AB-AA8D-FB5A4EDA4775.JPG](https://images.hive.blog/DQmeyBXPfqY8Y7ytvvJimk1CrZ9NdpvZC1jV2KNkHnwM5CT/62112943567__18BAF629-B63F-45AB-AA8D-FB5A4EDA4775.JPG)
*Today's project: Operation Cozy Flintlocks. I have a feeling that this winter might be "special"*</canter> -------------------
*And as most of the time, all of the images in this post were taken on the author's been texting and totally flexing new iPhone.*
---------------

Heck of a day for sure! I hope the fire doesn't change directions and head toward your place. I've been seeing on the news some really serious stuff happening out west with all the major fires going on...whole towns burning up...

It didn't! In fact I drove through it today, aside from a few hot spots, they have it put out. The whole thing was about two miles or so north of my house, and it really did a number on both sides of the highway just north of a town named Blanchard. I'm pretty grateful, as scary as all the fires that started were, it's nowhere near as bad as some of the fires in California, Oregon, and Washington. It's going to be an interesting fall, especially if the high pressure that is hanging over us all stays til mid October like they are predicting!
