The Return Of The Keen

It's been just over four weeks since I got wiped out. Funny enough, I have this propensity for doing things the odd way. Instead of just catching a Covid, which in many cases is more than enough to cause one's existential rug to get rumpled, I went above and beyond. In a twelve hour period I managed to do a trifecta of things, including hemorrhaging, getting bit on the spine by a spider, and coming down with the virus. 

Oh yes, and since I have an autoimmune disorder, my poor immune system did the only logical thing, it completely nuked my endocrine system. 

<center>**Long story short, this past four weeks hasn't been a good time.**</center>

My convalescence is not what this post is about however, but I had to give some context as to why I was *returning* to snowshoeing.

After years of wanting a pair of my very own, I finally got myself a pair of beautiful blue snowshoes for Christmas. I even got to take them out for a spin on the Pack River with a couple of my friends who I snowshoe with a lot during the winter. My health was in a great place, I was running three miles a few times a week and lifting weights. I felt GOOD.

<center>However, Life often has a way of knocking you off of your feel-good pedestal.</center>

I like viewing obstacles as a challenge for learning, a game so to speak. Framing setbacks this way has done wonders for my overall well-being. I am a bit of an optimist anyway, so seeing setbacks as a game really does wonders in the managing anxiety department. That said, getting completely wiped out and losing all of my fitness progress has been a bit of a, well, downer.

As I write this, my pituitary gland feels like it is being squeezed by the [Mountain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haf%C3%BE%C3%B3r_J%C3%BAl%C3%ADus_Bj%C3%B6rnsson). Like it's a grapefruit that is being used by that giant Icelandic creature for hand strengthening conditioning. It's really great. 

Doing anything beyond rote patterned behavior is a no go right now, my body is a depleted spaghetti noodle of no energy and, my friends, that is about as opposite of where I typically dwell as you can be. This state I am currently ensconced in is...frustrating.

And that brings us back to snowshoeing. Instead of my normal two hour, multiple mile trek, I knew I had to start small. Twenty minutes was my goal.

Thankfully, I am blessed to live on a beautiful farm in the North Idaho woods. I got out my snowshoes, strapped them to my feet, and headed off into the back yonder of our home.

Of course my little shadow went with me, Crazy Cora the cowboy corgi. She truly is the best companion ever, always near and fully present. As I began my abbreviated trek around the farm's trails I had a smile pasted to my mug from the start thanks to my ever-present canine friend.

Let's just say, I am truly thankful I was in halfway decent shape before being immune system maimed, for I made it around my course. Strangely enough, I never came close to getting out of breath, but dang are my muscles and energy levels trashed.

But I made it. And next time I will go for thirty minutes. Because growth requires persistence.

And on a humorous, bonus-ending note, during my trek I totally freaked the cattle out, they did not appreciate my altered appearance, Pumpkin (my daughter's show steer) still has not forgiven me🀣

It was a ninja spider, very stealth and effective in its attack, little brat. This is not the first time I have been bit by a venomous spider either. My theory is that me being bit by spiders is the way Nature balanced out the fact that mosquitos don't bite me. You know, it's all about balance and stuff. I'm starting to get annoyed that I don't have any spider powers at this point, grr...

That is an absolutely humbling experience, coming back from the dead that way. I am so excited that you made it and I know that you are too! I didn't even need to read those words. Those little blue boots are quite dashing, I imagine that you made quite a sight for pumpkin to see. 

Now listen to me very carefully. You can be on the tenacious you want to be so, you can challenge yourself till the end of time. But you know as well as I do that you still need to be careful so that your body doesn't do an instant replay on you. They are sneaky that way. You just got back into the land of the living, even though you drove halfway across the nation to get your hay with your just barely there self. Woman! Woman! Woman! Don't make me come out there and babysit you.

Of course, I am tickled pink that you are feeling even up to snowshoeing. Most people won't do that in their entire life or feel up to it. Love to you and take good care of yourself.

Humbling is a perfect way to describe it! I can't believe how *down* I am, it's quite frustrating at times, but then I practice a bit of *momento mori* and relish the fact that I get to stay here a bit longer, no matter how long the duration is. I really do have an enthusiasm about life!

That said, I promise I am listening to you (and others) about giving myself time to heal. This weekend I got knocked back down in a not so fun way, so now back to square negative one. But now I kinda want to be insolent and push harder, because then I could get babysat, AKA a visit from you😁

Exactly. 

It is glorious out today, almost 70! I am feeling wonderfully ready for spring, but, snowshoeing does sound fun! BTW... Most experts concur that reinfection after a recent omicron infection is entirely possible. Of course with you immunosuppressed people... That said, just pretend you are still a little sick and that you can do hardly anything. A visit to chastise you? Yes, please! :)

Eee! You are back in the saddle for sure! I upvoted your post on the garden planning sesh, need to go check it out in detail, just a bit behind because I had a rough weekend in the feel good department. 

I'll be right there with ya in spirit this week on the seed starting charts, Gotta line out that spreadsheet this week, because with the price of food I really want to up my successive harvest game.

Thanks:) Slowly but surely I am climbing out of the convalescence hole, it's just somewhat annoying to me to be down, I am a bit on the busy side lol!

This was my third time having the big C, the first two times weren't that bad, so I am thinking it was the trifecta of things that wiped me out so badly, and boy do I hear you on the flu. Once Christmas the swine flu swept through my family, and I really got an understanding of our fleeting mortality during that misery fest. 

Hope you are healing well too, it sure has been an interesting month for us both!

As you probably know, I was sick for about 10 days, no doubt with the latest 'rona. I am still short on energy, two weeks later. I've lived with fatigue and brain fog most of my adult life, but this is worse than usual. It's also that time of year when I feel trapped in my house because of the ice outside. I finally realized I could drive (jounce and bounce) three miles to town and go for a walk on ice-free paved residential roads. I took the grand-dog along, since he completely disapproves of ice and mud, and we enjoyed some short walks together until this cold snap arrived. We'll have to forego the strolls 'til it warms up into the 40s again. I figure 20 minutes of exercise is a good start for me, only I'm not going very far or very fast, thanks to the pooch.

You know, I never thought I would be filled with gratitude for having to navigate life with brain fog and fatigue, but for real has that drudgery been worth it just for the experience for navigating this fog-fatigue fest of the past month. We'll get through this cause we've had practice! That said, I am super sorry you are feeling down and that the weather is at that horrid stage. It's supposed to really warm up next week, so I hope you and the grand-dog are strolling before long. I am also doubly glad you have an ove- exertion limiting meter in the form of L, lol! Aww, I admire people who ski, I am an absolute train wreck at it, lol! Snowboarding is something that I can do fairly well, although it's been awhile, and you are absolutely right, the best time is now, we just got a few inches of fresh powder to play in:)!
