El conde Drácula estaba harto de vivir en su país. Cada vez que salía de su castillo en Transilvania, se encontraba con algún cazador de vampiros, dispuesto a clavarle una estaca en el corazón o a cortarle la cabeza. Había decidido buscar un lugar más tranquilo y seguro para establecerse.

 

Así fue como llegó a los llanos venezolanos, una vasta región de sabanas y ríos donde la gente vivía al ritmo de la naturaleza.

 

Drácula pensó que allí podría pasar desapercibido entre los campesinos y pobladores, y que tendría suficiente para saciar su sed de sangre.

Sin embargo, al llegar a Calabozo, un pequeño pueblo de la Capitanía General de Venezuela, se dio cuenta de que había cometido un grave error. Se había olvidado de sus zapatos en el castillo, y sus pies desnudos no soportaban el calor de la tierra llanera. Necesitaba conseguir algo para cubrirlos cuanto antes, o no podría caminar sin llamar la atención.

 

Fue entonces cuando vio la pulpería del pueblo, un modesto establecimiento donde se vendían todo tipo de productos a toda hora. Entró con cautela, esperando no encontrarse con ningún crucifijo o ajo que le hiciera daño. Dentro había un hombre robusto y de piel clara, con barba rojiza y sombrero, que le atendió mirándolo de arriba abajo.

 

El pulpero le dio la bienvenida preguntándole que deseaba. Drácula le respondió con su acento extranjero que necesitaba unos zapatos.

El pulpero le expresó que no tenía zapatos, pero sí unas alpargatas muy buenas, señalando unas sandalias de tela y suela que colgaban de una pared.

 

Drácula, intrigado, preguntó: ¿qué cosa era una alpargata?

 

El pulpero le respondió que eran unas sandalias típicas de la zona, cómodas y frescas. Pero las que él vendía eran especiales. Poseían un sistema electrónico que controlaba la hora de dormir y la hora de despertarse.

 

Drácula, confundido, preguntó de inmediato ¿qué significaba electrónico?

 

El pulpero, todo orgulloso, le respondió que era algo muy moderno. Un chip que detectaba la salida y la puesta del sol. Cuando el sol sale, las alpargatas se apagan y le obligan a dormir. Cuando el sol se oculta, las alpargatas se encienden y le permiten levantarse.

 

Drácula se rascó la cabeza y le preguntó: ¿para qué servía eso?

 

A lo que el pulpero le respondió que eso era para regular el reloj biológico, así no tendría problemas de insomnio por el cambio de horario. Estas alpargatas eran lo último en tecnología.

 

Drácula no podía creer lo que oía, dudaba totalmente de que algo así existiera en pleno siglo XIX. En su cabeza rondaba la idea de que era una clase de brujería. Sin embargo, no tenía tiempo para cuestionar nada. Necesitaba unas alpargatas urgentemente, o sus pies se harían cenizas.

 

Entonces, todo resignado, expresó que se llevaría las alpargatas.

 

Pregunto el precio de las mismas y el pulpero le respondió que era 1/8 de real a la vez que extendía la mano.

 

Drácula sacó una moneda de un dólar y se la dio al pulpero. Este, sorprendido, indicó que no tenía cambio.

Drácula, impaciente, le dijo que se quedara con el cambio.

 

El pulpero expresó agradecimiento diciéndole a Drácula que era un hombre muy generoso.

 

Drácula cogió las alpargatas y se las puso rápidamente. Sintió un alivio inmediato en sus pies. Las alpargatas eran suaves y ligeras. Se ajustaban perfectamente a su talla.

 

El pulpero, viendo que Drácula se veía satisfecho con las alpargatas, le preguntó por curiosidad cuál era su nombre.

 

-Me llamo... Drácula - respondió Drácula sin pensar.

-Mucho gusto, señor Drácula. Yo me llamo José Tomás Boves -Dijo el pulpero estrechando la mano de Drácula.

 

Drácula sintió un escalofrío al oír ese nombre. Le sonaba familiar. 



Recordó haber escuchado sobre él en Europa. Que era un militar español que había luchado contra la disidencia independentista. Era conocido por su crueldad en el campo de batalla. Había masacrado a miles de patriotas y civiles sin piedad.

 

¿Qué hacía ese hombre allí? ¿Qué era esa pulpería? ¿Qué eran esas alpargatas?

 

Drácula sintió que algo andaba mal. Que había caído en una trampa. Que estaba en peligro. 

Pero ya era tarde para reaccionar.

 

Las alpargatas se encendieron con una luz roja y emitieron un sonido agudo. El sol acababa de salir por el horizonte.

 

Drácula, sin poder moverse, sintió un dolor insoportable en todo su cuerpo. Su piel empezó a arder y a desprender humo. Sus ojos se llenaron de lágrimas y sangre. Su boca se abrió en un grito que no se escuchó.

 

Boves soltó la mano de Drácula y retrocedió unos pasos, diciendo:

-Te atrapé Drácula.



Drácula agonizante, balbuceó:

-¿Qué... qué eres tú? 

 

Boves dijo que era un cazador de vampiros y que las alpargatas eran su arma secreta.

 

Drácula no pudo decir nada más. Su cuerpo se convirtió en cenizas y se desvaneció con la brisa de la mañana.

 

Boves recogió las alpargatas, las guardó y en su mente expresó: otro más para la colección. Salió de la bodega y cerró la puerta tras él.


 

Se dirigió hacia su caballo y montó en él. Miró al cielo y vio el sol brillar con fuerza.


 

Sonrió y le clavo las espuelas a su caballo para ir a enfrentarse contra el general Pedro Zaraza.

Count Dracula was fed up with living in his own country. Every time he left his castle in Transylvania, he was met by some vampire hunter, ready to drive a stake through his heart or cut off his head. He had decided to look for a quieter, safer place to settle down.

 

This is how he came to the Venezuelan plains, a vast region of savannahs and rivers where people lived to the rhythm of nature.

 

Dracula thought that there he would be able to pass unnoticed among the peasants and villagers, and that he would have enough to quench his thirst for blood.


However, when he arrived in Calabozo, a small town in the Captaincy General of Venezuela, he realised he had made a serious mistake. He had forgotten his shoes in the castle, and his bare feet could not stand the heat of the plains. He needed to get something to cover them as soon as possible, or he would not be able to walk without attracting attention.

 

It was then that he saw the village pulpería, a modest establishment where all kinds of goods were sold at all hours. He entered cautiously, hoping not to come across any crucifixes or garlic that would hurt him. Inside was a stout, fair-skinned man with a reddish beard and a hat, who looked him up and down.

 

The grocer welcomed him by asking him what he wanted. Dracula replied in his foreign accent that he needed shoes.


The pulpero told him that he had no shoes, but that he had some very good espadrilles, pointing to some canvas sandals with soles hanging on a wall.

 

Dracula, intrigued, asked: what was an espadrille?

 

The pulpero replied that they were typical local sandals, comfortable and cool. But the ones he sold were special. They had an electronic system that controlled the time to go to sleep and the time to wake up.

 

Dracula, confused, immediately asked, what did electronic mean?

 

The proud pulpero replied that it was something very modern. A chip that detected the rising and setting of the sun. When the sun rises, the espadrilles turn off and force him to sleep. When the sun goes down, the espadrilles light up and allow him to get up.

 

Dracula scratched his head and asked: "What was the point of that?

 

To which the pulpero replied that this was to regulate the biological clock, so that he would not have problems with insomnia due to the time change. These espadrilles were the latest technology.

 

Dracula couldn't believe his ears, he totally doubted that such a thing existed in the middle of the 19th century. The idea that it was some kind of witchcraft was in his head. However, he had no time to question anything. He needed some espadrilles urgently, or his feet would turn to ashes.

 

Then, all resigned, he said he would take the espadrilles.

 

He asked the price and the pulpero replied that it was 1/8 of a real while extending his hand.

 

Dracula took out a dollar coin and gave it to the grocer. The shopkeeper, surprised, indicated that he had no change.


Drácula, impaciente, le dijo que se quedara con el cambio.

 

The pulper expressed his gratitude by telling Dracula that he was a very generous man.

 

Dracula took the espadrilles and quickly put them on. He felt an immediate relief in his feet. The espadrilles were soft and light. They fit his size perfectly.

 

The pulper, seeing that Dracula looked satisfied with the espadrilles, asked him out of curiosity what his name was.

 

-My name is... Dracula. -replied Dracula without thinking.


-How do you do, Mr. Dracula? My name is José Tomás Boves. -said the pulpero, shaking hands with Dracula.

 

Dracula felt a shiver when he heard the name. It sounded familiar. 



She remembered hearing about him in Europe. That he was a Spanish military man who had fought against pro-independence dissidents. He was known for his cruelty on the battlefield. He had slaughtered thousands of patriots and civilians without mercy.

 

What was that man doing there, what was that shop, what were those espadrilles?

 

Dracula sensed that something was wrong. That he had walked into a trap. That he was in danger. 


But it was too late to react.

 

The espadrilles lit up with a red light and made a high-pitched sound. The sun had just risen over the horizon.

 

Dracula, unable to move, felt an unbearable pain throughout his body. His skin began to burn and smoke. His eyes filled with tears and blood. His mouth opened in an unheard scream.

 

Boves let go of Dracula's hand and stepped back a few paces, saying:


-I got you, Dracula.



Dracula in agony, he babbled:


-What... what are you? 

 

Boves said he was a vampire hunter and that espadrilles were his secret weapon.

 

Dracula could say no more. His body turned to ashes and vanished in the morning breeze.

 

Boves picked up the espadrilles, put them away and in his mind said: another one for the collection. He left the cellar and closed the door behind him.


 

He walked to his horse and mounted it. He looked up at the sky and saw the sun shining brightly.


 

He grinned and spurred his horse into action against General Pedro Zaraza.
