How do you control discipline in your class?

Nothing sets a parents' nerves on edge quite like the topic of discipline. That second when your little baby is born and put in your arms, it is hard to believe that you will also end up like some parents you'd sworn you'd never be. Standing in the row at the supermarket while your little angel screams and thrashes about the box of cookies or chocolate that they are not allowed to open, or your baby refusing to eat the food that you give them. Most of us have been there.

But how do you approach discipline in the modern era where smacking, time-out and similar methods are totally frowned upon? When a child is between five and seven years old he goes to school and his teacher becomes responsible for the same type of discipline you have at home. If you did not insist on proper discipline at home, it is often the teacher that is left with the disciplinary problems.

How exactly do you as a teacher control all the students in the class?

Many of us grew up in a time when corporal punishment was part of our everyday lives. We listened, because we were too scared NOT to listen to our teachers.

Today if we have disciplinary issues in class, there are so many things that we need to take into consideration. We have to set some rules that the students should obey in class, but these are only kids that I'm talking about and they are not little puppets that we can control as we please.

All kids come totally different back-rounds and they each have their own idea about life. To put all those kids into one class can honestly cause some havoc. There are so many things that need to be taken into consideration:

What are the circumstances at home? (We live in a messed up world)

Did the child eat a healthy breakfast? (Some kids do not even have food at home)

Do we really know the kids? It is important to be emphatic but not emotionally involved but it is important to know a child's backround.

I have always had my own opinion about discipline and take note that this is only my opinion. I believe that if a child is actively kept busy in class, and he is stimulated intellectually and he is NOT bored, then there will be no disciplinary issues at all.

These are my class rules and I would love to hear from you what rules do you have in your class:

(My kids made up these rules themselves)

1. Stay positive and if you don't succeed, try again.

2. Accept the consequences of your actions.

3. Treat your teacher and friends with respect.

4. Never humiliate anyone in class.

5. Do you work to the best of your ability.

6. Follow directions and instructions.

7. Listen when others are talking.

8. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

9. Be kind to others.

10. Ask if you struggle!

The most amazing of all is that ALL students actually WANT rules. Students want discipline, and it is beneficial for healthy social and emotional development. Kids need to know that there are certain boundaries in life and that they can't just do what they want to do whenever. They must also know that the rules at home is not the same as the rules at school. Proper teaching can only take place in a solid stable environment so let us set those boundaries.

I mean, I look at my dad. He was twenty when he started having a family, and he was always the coolest dad. He did everything for his kids, and he never made us feel like he was pressured. I know that it must be a great feeling to be a guy like that.

@heretickitten ·
From my experience, discipline comes from within.

The child must choose to behave in a reasonable, intelligent manner.

Instead of encouraging mindless play, baby-talk, or even competition that could lead to bullying, ensure that the child wants to learn for the sake of learning. And they do.

It is an instinct within us to want to learn all we can, for the sake of survival.

Children are not stupid. They are just inexperienced, and simply waiting to learn about this world.

Give them real facts. Not lies. Don't encourage lies, or half-truths. Give them even dark truths. It is adults that raise children in a rainbow colored play-area where everyone is special, and gets a happy-face for following instructions.

Children know from instinct what the world should be like. The world is dark, and our food comes from killing innocent animals, our technology is not simply there. We must work hard to invent it. Our society was not built over-night, and life is not perpetually happy.

The truth must be understood, and the longer they can ponder the truth, the sooner they can come to grips with reality.

Encourage them to seek truths, all the way to the end, and accept truths. Give them philosophy, science, and arts.

Let them explore the real world. If you intend to teach a child, then teach them what is real. Nothing else is fact, except that which is real.

Remember that children grow into adults. Don't give them lies. Don't tell them to obey authority. Don't tell them to mindlessly believe things.

Give them useful information that they can use, or we will end up with a society of adults trained to be stupid, obedient, ignorant, and unable to come to grips with the true nature of reality.
