The return - Part 3

<p>"I can't believe its you John. I missed you so much. You look as if you're doing well for yourself!" She said while pointing at his car.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If she only knew that a car does not define a person. He looked at Debby and saw that she had a hard life these last few years. &nbsp;She looked tired, and the spark in her eyes were missing. Nevertheless he was glad to see her.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"I'm back in town. City life was not for me." He din't want to go into detail with her now.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"I would love to see you sometime." Debby said and smiled.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"Sure, I would love to catch up. Would you like to come to dinner tonight?" he asked without even thinking. She might be married,and he definitely didn't want to be the cause of havoc in her family.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"Of course, you can bring your family along." he said as an afterthought.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"It's just me and my daughter. She is sleeping over at a friend's house tonight. I would love to come over."</p>
<p>He smiled. He thought about what he had bought and knew that he had the ingredients to make them a proper meal.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"I'll see you at seven. I moved into my parent's house." She smiled and told him that she would see him that evening.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Johnny knew that he had to do some cleaning first. He hasn't had time to actually make the house livable again. He started cleaning the kitchen and the dining room first. At least they would have a place to eat and a proper place to cook. &nbsp;</p>
<p>It took him hours to get the kitchen back into shape, but when he was done, it looked like a brand new kitchen. It was definitely not what he was used to in the city, but that life was gone now, and he would never go back.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He was too embarrassed, and he wouldn't dare calling any of his so called friends for help. Today he couldn't even think why he actually thought they were his friends. Not one of them would help him get out of trouble, and he didn't have a choice but to just give up. Jessica was his downfall and he would never forgive her for the rest of his life, but he knew if he worked hard, he could get back to where he was except that he didn't want to.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He didn't want to be rich again. He didn't want people to walk over him anymore. He didn't want people to look up to him just because of his money. &nbsp;His life goal had changed. He now wanted to enjoy life, and it wasn't important to be the best or to have the most money. &nbsp;He wanted to feel real for a change. &nbsp;</p>
<p>He shook off the negative thoughts and packed out all the groceries. He whipped up a salad, and took out two great pieces of steak to grill, then went upstairs to take a shower. He dressed casually because he knew that he didn't have to impress anyone.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It was just after seven when he heard the pick up truck in the driveway. &nbsp;He was really looking forward to catching up. It was like he was getting a part of his life back and it couldn't have come at a sooner time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Debby emerged from the truck and looked just like he remembered her a lifetime ago. She smiled when she saw him on the porch and handed him an apple pie as she walked up the stairs.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"I know this is your favorite, so I baked one for desert."&nbsp;</p>
<p>He laughed. "I missed this. I missed you..."</p>
<p>She smiled. "I missed you too. We have a lot of catching up to do..."</p>
<p>For the first time in months, Johnny felt completely safe, and unknowingly Debby felt the exact same way. Perhaps there was a reason why everything turned out the way it did.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Debby told him about her amazing daughter and then the conversation turned more serious. She told him that she married a very wealthy lawyer after she graduated, and at first everything was wonderful but then he started drinking and he started to abuse her. She told Johnny everything that she had gone through in the last seven years, and when she finally had enough and got her sanity back she left him.&nbsp;</p>
<p>She had no other choice but to come back to town and move in with her parents. Johnny listened to her with tears in his eyes and he felt such empathy towards her.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Her divorce was not yet final and she still had to go back to the city for the final proceedings. Her husband didn't want to give her anything but she had her own lawyers fighting for her and they assured her that she would get half of everything. She was not even interested in the money. The fact that she had peace and quiet and no one breathing down her neck was enough to get her through life. &nbsp;It didn't even matter to her if she ever saw the money, as long as she and her daughter was safe.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Johnny grilled the steaks while she was talking and every now and again a tear dropped into the pan. He felt so sorry for her, but he was glad that she got out of her situation alive. By the time she finished talking, the steaks were ready and she helped him carry everything to the dining room. He lit a candle and opened another bottle of wine. He poured them each a glass.</p>
<p>"You haven't told me much about yourself John. What have you been up to in the last couple of years." He couldn't believe that it had been nearly fifteen years since he had last seen Debby.&nbsp;</p>
<p>He smiled.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"There is not much to tell. I had a very successful life. I had all the money in the world, and then I got involved with Jessica...."&nbsp;</p>
<p>He described Jessica in detail to Debby and every time he said her name it felt as if someone was stabbing the knife even further into his back. He continued to tell her about everything that happened and after he was done, both him and Debby had tears in their eyes.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"It seems like we were quite busy messing up our lives John. I'm just glad that you are back here, and that you are still in one piece."</p>
<p>"I still have to find a job Deb. I have nothing. What you see is what you get."</p>
<p>She smiled at him. "You will find the right job for you John, and this time your life will turn out differently."</p>
<p>John felt at peace. It was just the way that Debby said it that had calming effect on him. Debby gathered the plates and dished them up some apple pie for desert. &nbsp;</p>
<p>He suggested they go sit outside on the porch to eat their desert and she agreed. It brought back so many memories while they sat outside and watched the kids driving by with their bicycles in the street.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Both John and Debby felt like they were now where they belonged. They both had to start new lives, but at least they would have each other as support. &nbsp;</p>
